Comfortable, quiet home in Pittsfield minutes from Tanglewood, Berkshire Theatre Festivals and other year round attractions. Oldest one room school house in New England and listed as a U.S. National Historic Place. Built in 1843 and used continually by the community until being converted to a private residence in 1985. The home was completely renovated in 2010 with glass and tile bathroom and updates throughout the 1000 square foot interior located in the middle of an acre wooded lot on a quiet mountain road. The bedroom with a queen sized bed is in the upstairs loft. The ground floor has the bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, the original blackboard, very large windows, a great room with dining table for eight, gas ceramic stove, sofa and TV/DVD entertainment center. The sofa can be converted to a queen size bed for guests or kids or to sleep in front the fireplace in the winter. "This small property in the Berkshires served a western Massachusetts community from 1843 to 1985 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovated in 2010, the one-bedroom home now has a glass and tile bathroom. "It's very cool," Gray says. "It's the oldest one-room schoolhouse in New England." A blackboard still adorns the kitchen." Named first in the article that included ten school houses in the world in include an Irish cottage school house.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I visited in February during the big snow storm. Being from the south, we especially enjoyed having the gas ceramic stove burning in the great room all day and the woods blanketed with snow. We stayed in and cooked in the well-equipped kitchen - a cozy and romantic weekend! We hope to return this summer to attend the Tanglewood events.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

After reading the review of this "oldest one room schoolhouse in New England" in Septembers USA Today, I planned a trip to take advantage of the stunning fall foliage. This school house did not disappoint. Thoughtfully updated to provide all the comfort I needed, while still retaining it's historic charm- the original blackboard is still there! It was a perfect jumping off point for various day trips and I was quite content to return back to my home away from home to sit outside by the fire at the end of the day and enjoy my surroundings. Lovely. Thank you for sharing this unique home with me!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thanks again for our lovely stay at Morewood. This our second stay. We had my sister and brother in law from Boston join us for part of the week. There was plenty of room between the sleeping loft bed and great room couch. They loved the house and the Berkshires. We will be back again in the fall.Did you find this review helpful? We had a fabulous vacation! Morewood is outstanding inside & out. James Taylor & Carol King - phenomenal & BSO - seriously serene. We kayaked in the Stockbridge Bowl & Lake Onata & watched the bald eagles soar over head. Too hot for hiking, but did drive up to Mt. Greylock. Thanks again. JoyceDid you find this review helpful? Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: Bob and Karen Clydesdale bought Morewood in an city auction in the 1980s while living in the Berkshires. Karen spent three years converting the building from the ground up with new wide plank floors to a new roof to drag it into the 21st century while preserving the historical exterior and enhancing the grounds and interior ambiance.
Why the Owner Chose Pittsfield:
Morewood School is located in the center of Berkshire County with a long historical connection to the old Pittsfield families such as the Morewoods, Holmes and Melvilles. The new interior and preserved exterior provides an uncommon comfort level and access to the year round attractions of Western Mass.
