Villa Hada Escondida is a beautiful private and secluded home decorated with Costa Rican hardwoods, ceramic tile, original native artworks and luxurious amenities throughout. Surrounded by 180 degree pastoral mountain views of the stunning Central Valley and adjacent canyon, Villa Hada sits on a quiet country lane in the lush Los Angeles Cloud Forest. Our guests love when the morning clouds briefly enshroud the house in mist in this unique ecosystem. We enjoy an average daily high of 82F (28C) and a low of 64F (16.5C). The villa is situated on a hilltop facing east/west so you can watch the sunrise from the kitchen table and relax over a sunset that's perfectly framed by the balcony's teak timber posts.
Villa Hada is elegantly decorated with Pottery Barn window treatments including a romantic wall of sheer ivory curtains in the master bedroom. Our guests will love the two huge showers overlooking the canyon complete with Moen rain shower heads and plush white cotton towels after a long day of exploring. The master and guest beds are made with Pottery Barn and Laura Ashley high thread count sheets, down pillows and duvets, and decorative cushions and plush throws for comfort. Our upstairs sitting room is beautifully furnished with comfortable cushions in the rattan seating area. Our colourful cotton hammocks, rocking chairs, and eucalyptus wood dining table and chairs are perfect for birdwatching over the canyon from either the ceramic tiled terrazza or the mahogany-floored balcony. And art enthusiasts will love Villa Hada's collection of original artwork and paintings by the German-born La Fortuna Coco Loco Gallery owner and artist Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton and the artisan statuary by Guanacaste's indigenous Chortega indians throughout the garden.
Why Choose Villa Hada Escondida? Villa Hada is a unique single family home located on nearly two acres of lush rain forest and is surrounded by guava and ratoncillo trees covered in epiphytes and bromeliads. Because of the humid cloud forest climate, our hibiscus hedge-enclosed garden has beautiful hydrangea and rose bushes in addition to the tropical plants you'd expect to see in Costa Rica. Our guests love the fresh guavas, bananas and plantains they can pick from our own trees. Villa Hada Escondida has its very own private nature trail which leads past our banana grove on a gently sloping zigzag path towards golden bamboo to a creek and waterfall where you'll see hummingbirds, blue morpho butterflies, tree ferns and birds of paradise. And no worries if you forgot to pack your wellies and walking stick. Villa Hada guests will find a selection of rubber wellies and bamboo walking sticks for exploring our property.
Our home is just 15 minutes from the center of San Ramon, two minutes from the road to La Fortuna/Arenal, two hours from Arenal, and about one hour and 10 minutes northwest of San Jose Airport. Our proximity to the airport makes our home an excellent option for your first or last few days in Costa Rica. Villa Hada sleeps four and with it's two-story layout is suitable for two couples or one family. Because we want all our guests to fully enjoy the clean fresh air of the mountainous cloud forest climate, Villa Hada is a strictly non-smoking home. Our home is located in a guarded and gated community of European and North American expatriates. Many of our guests choose Villa Hada as place to research the San Ramon area for its affordable real estate. We are more than happy to help you plan your itinerary in Costa Rica, provide you with recommendations for things to see or do, or to just answer questions about traveling and driving in Costa Rica. Please note: Because the house can be difficult to find in the dark, all guests must arrange to arrive at the property before 5.00pm (17:00) local time to receive the keys from our caretaker who will show you around the house.
Villa Hada's ceramic-tiled first floor features a gourmet kitchen with a stainless steel refrigerator and gas stove, a wooden trestle table with bench seating, a sitting room area with a futon, and a full-service laundry room. The downstairs bedroom has two beautiful hardwood twin beds with Laura Ashley high thread count sheets, feather down pillows and duvets, extra cushions and plush throws, and hardwood nightstands with beautiful ceramic lamps and a hardwood armoire. Enjoy views of the hibiscus-hedge enclosed back garden and ridge line road to La Fortuna right from the tiled bathroom shower in the downstairs bathroom. A separate sink area has an elegant glass bowl basin for washing up.
Upstairs you'll find an open-beamed ceiling great room with the master bedroom's dramatic wall of Pottery Barn ivory cotton voile curtains behind the hardwood-topped hand wrought iron railing on one side and a sitting area on the other. The sheer drapes filter the light and add privacy without blocking the gorgeous views of rolling hills through the balcony's wall of windows. The entire upstairs has beautifully polished hardwood floors, including the outside balcony. The upstairs full bath has a huge shower with a Moen rain shower head, Pottery Barn shower curtain, long wall of windows and a glass bowl sink. The master bedroom is a cozy retreat with Pottery Barn high thread count sheets, feather down pillows and duvets, decorative cushions and plush throws plus beautiful ceramic lamps and hardwood furnishings. Our polished hardwood floors are covered with lovely Pottery Barn cotton rugs. Across from the bedroom is our beautiful sitting area with a comfortable Pier One rattan settee, chairs and tables and decorative cushions. Our guests will love cuddling up with a good book or watching a DVD after a fun day of exploring.
What to do at Villa Hada Escondida: Plan the next day's adventures or enjoy the view through the balcony windows from the upstairs sitting room's wicker settee and chairs. Villa Hada's guest library on the rattan etagere in the balcony hallway offers a collection of Costa Rican guide books, brochures, maps, and wildlife identification books including a log of the 45 species of birds that have been seen in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest. Yoga enthusiasts will be in heaven practicing yoga on our balcony. Only minutes away you can take a guided day or night tour through the 6.75 miles of trails in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest, try zip lining through the canopy or go horse back riding past working dairy farms. Or just stay put and do some bird watching from Villa Hada Escondida's balcony or terrace.
Wondering what the house's name means? Villa Hada Escondida means Country House of the Hidden Faerie. Our two small children love faeries and all things magical and truly believe that faeries exist, especially in their house in Costa Rica.

This is a great place to stay ... We had a great time the house is as the photo's look and it was clean and ready for us. You sure do get a chance to see the amazing clouds both in the morning and at night they just drift in and out. They have done a great trail on the property so you can walk and see the birds and butterflies and Chico their beloved freind and gardner/ care taker dose a wonderful job making you feel at home. He dose not speak english but with lots of hand jesters and big smiles it all works out I see why he is loved so much. We would recommend the house as it sits in a great area you can take short day trips to see other things from this location. Diana is wonderful to deal with she will provide you with amazing local information listen to her she has done a great job at finding wonderful things to see and do and places to eat . We loved the house and the location. I traveled with my husband and 3 kids (ages 8-13). This time, we were able to stay for only 2 days. I hope to go back to the San Ramon area and stay longer, and when I do, I want to stay in the same house. It was well stocked, close to everything, and we felt right at home.Owner response: Thank you Kelly for choosing Villa Hada for your family's recent holiday. Villa Hada is incredibly convenient for its proximity to San Ramon and the road to La Fortuna but is in a very quiet and tranquil location. We take great care to make sure our home is as comfortable and well kitted out for our guests as is it for us. We always receive compliments on how well-stocked the kitchen is and that all you really need to bring are the fresh ingredients to make a gourmet meal. We have two small children and have made sure Villa Hada is a cosy and comfortable place to stay for families with loads of luxurious touches and amenities throughout. I hope your children enjoyed the Villa Hada ZigZag Nature Trail that leads guests from our banana grove to the blue morphos, hummingbirds, tree ferns and golden bamboo in our wee rain forest at the bottom of the garden. We look forward to you staying at Villa Hada again soon!

Villa Hada Escondida was our home away from away during this short 2 weeks in Costa Rica. Extremely charming with an amazing view. The villa has everything you need to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Mrs Lapierre is a sweetheart to deal with, she made sure we had everything in order to have the best stay ever in Costa Rica. We loved and enjoyed every minutes of our stay at Villa Hada. We practice our Spanish with our good friend Chico! The Lapierre are taking very good care of the villa, it is causy and very clean. My dad, my sister and I definitely and strongly recommend this villa to anyone looking forward to have a home away from home in San Ramon, Costa Rica. Thank you again for letting us enjoy a piece of your paradise.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you Isabelle! What a lovely review. I really enjoyed our emails helping you plan day trips from Villa Hada. The Central Valley is so picturesque and easy to explore. Chico our caretaker does his very best to welcome our guests and make sure they are comfortable from the moment they arrive. He creates magic in our garden (like our new Zigzag Nature Trail!) and lovingly cares for our home as if it was his own. And you can't beat Villa Hada's canyon view which you can see from the kitchen table, balcony, master bedroom and even the upstairs and downstairs showers. Hope you'll stay at Villa Hada again sometime.

What a fantastic place to stay. My husband and I loved our visit....and wished we could have stayed longer. The house beautiful and so ready for us. I sat on the terrace for hours...or the hammock and just absorbed the beauty and the birds, the mist and the air. I am telling all my friends to go visit....and that this is the away to do it. We had lovely adventures away from the house, and then just complete days of doing nothing. I felt my soul come back to my body after a long year of work. What a little paradise! : )Owner response: What a delightful review of Villa Hada! It really encapsulates what so many of our guests love to do at the house. The Los Angeles Cloud Forest is a wonderful hidden gem in Costa Rica and Villa Hada sits right at the edge of it all. We love sitting in the rocking chairs on the terrace with a cup of local Espiritu Santo coffee enjoying the ever-expanding garden's hibiscus, hydrangea, guava, banana, plantain and lemon trees. Our balcony makes a spectacular place to eat breakfast, practise yoga, read a long book or just get reacquainted with your family while watching the cloud mist and birds go by. We hope you'll return to our little paradise soon!

For us, after living a busy life, this is a great place to re-connect with our 2 teenage girls. Hiking, walking, canopy tours, volcano excursion, food, coffee and fruit were great ways to spend the first half of our vacation. Best of all, no television for the teenagers! We were so active it was nice to be able to "come home" to a cozy, well stocked home where you could feel at ease. Diana made sure the smallest details were taken care of and provided helpful tidbits of information. Looking forward to a return trip.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: It was a pleasure having your family stay at Villa Hada Lea! I'm glad I was able to give you recommendations for fun things to do with the girls. Villa Hada is a wonderful retreat from a fast-paced life. So many of our guests enjoy completely unplugging from all electronic devices and relaxing with a cup of coffee on the balcony to watch the cloud mist. Our private nature trail is a fun adventure for children of all ages right in the back garden and the best part is you won't see another tourist, just hummingbirds, blue morpho butterflies and the odd dairy cow. We hope you'll choose Villa Hada for another trip to Costa Rica!

I am absolutely homesick. Tonight, in Knoxville, Tennessee, there is a great breeze and temps about 65. That’s exactly Villa Hada in the evenings! Daytime was breezy, sunny, blue sky and you didn’t know the temp was about 80. Weather was of course an influencing factor - but the abode made it more so. We loved the accommodation of two levels, two bathing facilities and common area to gather for meals or planning the next day’s adventure. Our particular itinerary was obviously day-by-day that probably introduced our kinship with the gardener, Chico, when he joined us for lunch, and to meet some of the neighbors who were home. We also learned very quickly with our driver that within 15 minutes we were in the middle of San Ramon for poking around, lunch, taking pictures of colorful sights or at a catch-your-own-fish farm for supper. There are other positive posts about this accommodation ---but believe me, after your stay of 24 hours, you, too will find it simply elegant to make a return trip.Did you find this review helpful? Diana, thanks so much for rental of your CR home. It is a beautiful area and quite close to many attractions all around. Only problem, we needed a few more months to see and do everything we would have liked. Chico was an absolute darling and enjoyed meeting a few of your neighbors and loved their friendly pooches. Everything was comfortable and your directions were perfect (other than a few colors of buildings have changed!). We really didn't have the opportunity to use the kitchen much. We would find it more beneficial for a future return, a longer stay and with another couple/friends etc. The laundry came in very handy, as we hiked in the rain and mud and came home filthy! The only drawback, which of course is not under your control, is not having any water on the last day of our visit. Apparently the entire area was out, so we headed to the airport with extra deodorant in tow! We would certainly recommend this rental to those with future plans to travel to the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Much Thanks, Cynthia & Patrick - Olympia WA March 2012Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We enjoyed our stay,we did not see as many birds as we hoped as it was quite windy. The villa is very well equipped and Chico was very helpful. The surrounding area is beautiful,we went to Arenal Volcano and to the Pacific Coast. The information supplied by the owner was very good.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and had a chance to go to Arenal. The hour and a half drive from Villa Hada to Arenal is one of the most beautiful in the country and is a great example of Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems. The road towards Arenal takes you from the cool and misty mountainous Los Angeles Cloud Forest to the hotter drier Northern Plains at the foot of Arenal. It goes past the butterfly farm which has an amazing hummingbird garden and nature trail and a brilliant butterfly exhibit with dozens of species of butterflies in all stages of development. We highly recommend it!

Exceptional home in the mountains - a bit dicey to get to, so bring a four-wheel drive vehicle! Views from this home are amazing, and Chico the caretaker was wonderful. The home was well stocked with kitchen spices/towels/sheets and blankets. Amazing temperatures, and the home owner Diana was extremely helpful throughout the process. This home is close to many wonderful areas in Costa Rica to zipline and view volcanos, and is an easy one hour drive from the airport in San Jose. Neighbors in the area were very friendly! It is a beautiful home, but teenagers may not like the lack of TV and inconsistent internet service. I would highly recommend this home for adults - absolutely stunning views in the morning when the clouds roll into the region. Pura vida!Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay at Villa Hada and it was a pleasure helping you plan an itinerary for exploring the Central Valley using our years of experience traveling around the country. Chico is a great asset to our home and makes every guest feel welcome the moment they arrive. Four-wheel drive vehicles are always recommended for fully exploring Costa Rica since road conditions can vary greatly. I'm sorry you experienced inconsistent wifi while the provider was upgrading service to our area. Although our wifi helps guests stay in touch with work or family back home or plan the next leg of their trip, most of our guests find Villa Hada is a perfect place to unplug, relax, recharge and reconnect with each other in a naturally stunning and private sanctuary.

We selected Villa Hada Escondida for its location and unique character. We went to CR to investigate as a potential place to retire. VHE provided a great location to explore the central highlands. We took the owner's suggestion that its proximity to the airport made it perfect to start and end our 10 days in CR. It is just as pictured on their site. It is spacious, clean, and peaceful with great views of the country side. We saw flocks of exotic birds every day. We would not hesitate to recommend VRE especially if you want a place to completely distance yourself from the stress of everyday life. And it’s convenient to the natural attractions that draw many to CR.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you so much Geoffrey. It was a pleasure having you as our guests. Villa Hada makes a great base to explore the extremely scenic western central highlands. San Ramon has all the conveniences, amenities and medical facilities of any small North American city and because of this it's attracting a growing expatriate community of retirees and young families alike. Despite Villa Hada's proximity to San Ramon and the airport, it's a tranquil escape and peaceful locale that is still under the radar for most travelers to Costa Rica!

About the owner: We're an American couple living in Edinburgh, Scotland. We've been traveling to Costa Rica since 1999 and love the Central Valley. We've both lived, worked and traveled to more than 45 countries and all 50 states but Villa Hada is our favorite place on earth. I am a figure skating coach and former professional ice show skater and my husband works in for an international health care company. Our two small children and small dog, Matilda, love to play in Villa Hada's 'secret garden'. We love English gardening and have designed Villa Hada Escondida's garden to look like an English garden complete with hedgerows (made of hibiscus), hydrangea and rose bushes. We add to our garden on every visit and our fantastic caretaker keeps it all looking amazing. We are bilingual (Spanish) and bought our home in Los Angeles Sur so our children could grow up immersed in the beautiful Costa Rican culture and perfect their already terrific Spanish.
Why the Owner Chose San Ramon:
San Ramon has the perfect climate with temperatures ranging from 65-85F and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We love the Central Valley for it's kind people, simple lifestyle, spectacular mountain views, twisty roads that are fun to drive on, and because our children can be immersed in the best of pura vida culture during our time here.
When we're at home in Villa Hada we love to visit the weekly farmer's market in San Ramon near the University of Costa Rica where you can buy the most amazing fruits and vegetables for a fraction of the price in North America or Europe. We spend a day or two a week shopping in San Ramon, a delightful little city where you'll find anything you could possibly want all around the central plaza. Our children love the butterfly garden located about 6.5 miles north on the road to La Fortuna and the coffee plantation tour at Espiritu Santo Coffee in Naranjo 16 miles away towards San Jose.
We often go horseback riding at the stables located just outside the entrance to the trails of the Los Angeles Cloud Forest where the rates are very reasonable and the trails rides are fantastic. Our house is on the southern edge of the Los Angeles Cloud Forest and the cloud mist that moves through the valley and past our house is indescribably beautiful. The views from our home are outstanding especially from our upstairs balcony where we practice yoga daily. We hike our own private nature trail at least twice a week to see blue morphos and hummingbirds. At certain times of the year, the back wall of the house can be covered in butterfly chrysalis.
During the rainy season, especially September-November, the waterfall is enormous. It's at least two stories high and loud enough that you can hear it from the balcony. There's is zip lining in the local cloud forest and Las Musa water park just outside San Ramon for more local activities. Our house is a terrific place to come home to after day trips throughout the Central Valley.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Villa Hada is a little hidden gem in a charming area off the beaten path. It's a terrific place to relax for a few days after a long flight or to just check out for a week without being too far away from civilisation and creature comforts. Our home is beautifully decorated with elegant furnishings, Costa Rican artwork and window treatments throughout. Our high thread count sheets, feather down pillows and duvets, decorative cushions and high quality blankets, lap rugs and bed throws are a lovely bit of comfort. Our gourmet kitchen has everything you need to make a delicious meal in the comfort of a private home. And there's wifi and a selection of books, DVDs and CDs when you need to reconnect or be entertained. Villa Hada is conveniently located to the main road yet far enough away to feel fully immersed in nature.
