Sunset Villa is a luxury, private ocean-view retreat in Kona's most prestigious gated community of Keauhou Estates, which wraps around a championship 36-hole golf course. Situated on the most private lot within the development, this home enjoys dramatic ocean views from Keauhou Bay to Kona Bay.
The home and grounds feature many professional architect and decorator designed improvements and upgrades: extensive rock wall and landscaping work; designer interior and exterior finishes; bamboo flooring; sliding glass doors/screens; artistic lighting; outdoor living room furniture; bar stools, premium mattresses, bedding and towels; plasma high definition TV/home theater and custom made teak cabinetry (including a queen size Murphy bed in the Private sleeping porch/media room); private gardens (including an outdoor shower); Bose stereo sound system and more.
Features of this home include two very private bedroom suites, at opposite ends of the home, and a private sleeping porch/media room (with a queen size Murphy bed in a custom made teak cabinet) with a half-bath just outside its French doors. You'll enjoy panoramic ocean views throughout the home, with unsurpassed privacy and quiet. There is a large covered lanai with outdoor living room furniture, a barbecue area, outdoor wet bar with small refrigerator, media room with plasma HDTV and home theater system, laundry room with washer and dryer, den off the master bedroom suite with a desk and wireless broadband Internet access and private enclosed garden/lanai with outdoor shower. The guest bedroom suite features a meditation garden and small lanai.
This architecturally designed and professionally decorated home boasts luxury details including high beam wood ceilings; quality and antique furniture; an extensive art collection; wall-to-wall carpeting in the great room and bedrooms; tile floors in the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room, bamboo flooring in the media room/sleeping porch; fully equipped gourmet kitchen, including high performance appliances; dramatic indoor and outdoor lighting; and well-equipped multimedia options. The high quality of the home's custom built furniture, antiques and original art create an aesthetically pleasing environment rarely found in vacation rentals! The private swimming pool has been resurfaced with a dark passive solar color, with new designer glass tile around its edge. A salt-filter system eliminates the need for chlorine and feels smooth and silky to the swimmer.
This home's ideal location at the 500 foot elevation and windows on all four sides ensures cooling breezes even during Kona's hottest days. The Keauhou Estates development fronts the beautiful and challenging 36-hole golf course at the Kona Country Club. In addition to Kona village just five miles to the north, Keauhou Shopping Center is a beautiful open air center just a few minutes drive from this home. This shopping center offers great shopping, dining, entertainment, and a seven-plex movie theater. A variety of local beaches are just a few minutes from the house, including the island's most famous snorkeling beach - Kahaluu Beach Park. In addition, the rest of the Big Island, with its world-class resorts, signature golf course, and dramatic coast lines, are within easy reach from our convenient location. Volcanoes National Park, a two hour drive from Kona, is a fascinating day trip destination.

We have just returned from 11 wonderful days in Hawaii, with Sunset Villa providing a beautiful home base from which to explore the Big Island. To begin with, the location is great - close to Kona, and centrally located for adventures to the Volcano, Hilo, South Point, and Kohala areas. The shopping complex that's about 1/2 mile away was handy for those quick visits to a grocery store as well. The quiet gated community helped provide that little extra peace-of-mind that's always nice to have when one is vacationing far from home. The views from the lanai of the sunsets were incredible, and reading a book while relaxing on the comfortable outdoor furniture, with lit tiki torches providing a warming glow in the early evening hours, made for the perfect ending to each day. The interior of the home provided much to explore as well - pictures, paintings, sculptures and carvings of various styles are on display in every room of the home. While there are 3 flatscreen tv's in the home (if I remember right), I am happy to say that, except for 1 or 2 hours of watching a particular Olympic event, our family chose the pool or lanai over the television as the activities of choice during our visit. The house has a large well-appointed master bathroom, and a side office/den off the master bedroom was a great location to setup a laptop. WIFI was also available, and the only 'complaint' my son (13 years old) had was that the WIFI signal was a bit weak in the guest bedroom side of the home, but as we told him... you're on vacation, WIFI is secondary (smile). The pool itself is not too big and not too small - perhaps 3 or 4 feet deep on the shallow to maybe 6 feet on the deep end, and there were inner tubes, balls, and other pool items provided. Additionally, for days at the beach a selection of sturdy beach chairs, beach umbrellas, boogie boards, and a supply of high quality beach towels meant that we didn't have to rent these items for our trips to the beach. Bob really has provided nearly everything a guest would need on their vacation. I would not hesitate to stay at Sunset Villa again on our next trip to the Big Island! Thank you for sharing your lovely home in Kona. We had a wonderful week and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful and serene environment that you created at Sunset Villa. We have rented vacation homes many times in past years and this was one of the most memorable. The house has a great balance of elegance and comfort and you deserve credit on an excellent remodel. We hope to have the chance to stay there again during a future visit.Owner response: I would like to add an owner's review, to accompany the most recent comments from my guests. Turns out that I arrived in Kona for a last minute visit the same day as the above guests. Since my own home was not available, I decided to rent a romantic, luxury, ocean-front home in a gated community in Kona until my home became available. Although the ocean-front house itself was beautiful, well-managed, and the sound of the surf enchanting, there were other issues that reinforce my feelings about the specialness of the privacy and tranquility of Sunset Villa. As I mention in my own web-site, there are trade-offs to ocean front homes. Since all beach property belongs to the public under Hawaiian law, and public access must be provided, you never know who is going to be wandering along the perimeter of your lovely ocean-front rental. In this case, there was a low rock wall just on the outside of this home's privacy hedge. Unfortunately, people would walk along the top of this rock wall and look into the pool, hot tub, and house; several of the beach visitors looked homeless. Although we encountered no security issues, there was some feeling of discomfort. The houses around the beach were built very close together, with many looking into each other's windows. The house was well-appointed for a rental, although the art and furnishings were clearly that of a rental house - a little sparse and impersonal for my own tastes. With two nights left on this quick trip, we moved into Sunset Villa. As many of my guests have stated, the web-site photos do not do the home justice. We were so relieved to be in the very private and tranquil setting that is Sunset Villa. Although the new kitchen stove, and all new bathroom granite counter-tops, sinks, faucets, mirrors, and lighting do not yet show up in any photos, they add to the ambience. I will never rent another house in Kona. In the future, I will delay any visits so that I can stay in Sunset Villa. Take home lesson from this trip: I am very grateful that I own Sunset Villa and intend to hang onto to it forever!! Bob

This is our second trip and home rental in the Kona area we rented a home on the beach (Ali’i drive) and we felt much safer and relaxed this time at Sunset Villa. Owner info
Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: I am a retired business owner and CPA who bought the home in 1999 as a private retreat and get-away. I have lived full-time in the house for several years and furnished it accordingly.
Why the Owner Chose Keauhou Estates:
Although I thought about ocean front properties, most are noisy, and since the beaches are public property, strangers might be wandering by such homes. Sunset Villa is located in a private gated community on a very private lot - the perfect retreat.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Sunset Villa features great privacy and intimacy.
