The cottage provided comfortable living arrangements for two couples. One unit has a full kitchen which we used for breakfast and dinner; we shopped for food in Waimea and recommend the Food Land (next to the Starbucks in the Parker Ranch shopping center). Our hostess had coffee and jams and fresh fruit in the kitchen for our arrival, and we found the pantry stocked with cleaning materials, trash bags and cooking supplements. The Wifi was reliable if a bit slow. In short, everything was as advertised and better than expected. The cottage was clean and well maintained. On some mornings we could see the peak of Mauna Kea from the living room window. Waimea is about 12 miles west and Honokaa about 5 miles east via Old Mamalahoa Highway, which is in heavy growth to the east and open fields to the west. A car is necessary for the entire stay, with many of the best sights in the north (as Waipi'o Valley lookout and Pololu Valley lookout and access) and on the west coast (go to Hapuna Beach, or Waikoloa Beach Park on A-Bay), eat at Pesto Cafe in Kawaihae, and bring your map. Map: I bought the "Hawai'i Island Atlas and Map: A Guide to the Big Island" early in our trip and used it continually for our stay. The best $7 I spent in Hawaii (though it doesn't have Kapana Drive on it, the location of the cottage.

Owner response: Every owner should have such appreciative and discerning guests! ( but we must keep working hard to deserve such praise) The island is indeed a place to explore. E Komo Mai!
This was one of the Best VRBO we have ever stayed in. Karin's home touches are most welcome, from all the beautiful flowers in the house, to all the amenities such as laundry soap, dryer sheets, soaps, shampoos, fresh butter, organic eggs and milk. Take an inventory of the house before you buy groceries etc., there is alot provided. Scandia Cottage comes with a beautiful view of Mauna Loa and the most beautiful roads to get to it. It was located in the perfect spot to explore both sides of the Island. We were so comfortable here! Mahalo Karin for your hospitality and sharing Scandia Cottage with us! Kim and Teresa Illinois

Owner response: What can I say? These are the kind of guests that I have been lucky to meet, who are appreciative and enjoy what this island has to give to travelers with curiosity and a positive attitude.( they also are among the guests who leave Skandia in wonderful shape) Mahalo!!
We really enjoyed our stay at Skandia Cottage. The location is perfect for exploring the northern half of the Big Island. The cottage is immaculate, and the back lanai is a great place to chill out after a long day of sightseeing.

Owner response: It is always so rewarding to hear that guests have taken advantage of this location to either explore the island, or hunker down for peace and quiet if that is their preference. A must-add...our guests are also immaculate, and leave the cottage in beautiful condition!
What a great time!
What a great time!
We don't know what to say because the past reviews are all so glowing. Having never stayed anywhere but in a condo at the beach we didn't know what to expect. As soon as we pulled up to Skandia we could see this was going to be special. I told my wife I didn't care what the inside looked because it was so beautiful outside. Surprise!!! The inside was not only very clean but stocked with everything imaginable, including a ton of DVD's and books. Karin left our favorite cereal, organic eggs, all kinds of fruit and the most wonderful whole grain bread we have ever eaten, along with soy milk (our favorite) and a half gallon of fruit juice. The area is a Picture Taking paradise and it's all right there within walking distance. Of course we did a lot of driving in the area and saw wild turkeys, beautiful horses, owls, quail, pheasants and an ?Io, the Hawaiian hawk. Everyone was excited because they are very seldom seen. If you are visiting the Big Island be sure to stay at Skandia. Just don't book it up too much because we are going back next year.

Owner response: It is heartwarming to learn that the longer stays on the 'green side' of the island can be so revealing of the beauty and possibilities that exist for the exploring guest. It really is 'BIG' and has something for everyone!
This was just the type of place we were looking for. It is located up on the hillside and on the "wet" side of the island. We had great weather during our stay but even if it rains more than you might like, it is just a short drive to Waimea and the "dry" side. The accommodations and hospitality were excellent. We appreciated the fresh fruit upon our arrival. If you want to spend time on the beach or shopping, you can get closer. For us, those activities were still in reach but this little house was our home away from home. Besides all that, it was a great value. We hope to stay here again in the future.

Owner response: We refer to Ahualoa as on the 'Green Side' as opposed to the Brown Side of the Big Island. These guests enjoyed beautiful and sunny weather during their stay at Skandia Cottage. Of course, rain happens, or we wouldn't be lush and sub tropical!
Wonderful Skandia Cottage
Wonderful Skandia Cottage
We stayed at this cozy and comfortable little cottage for almost a week. It was extremely clean and well taken care of. The kitchen is very well-stocked with cooking items and dry goods. We were asked about preferences for breakfast foods and found the kitchen stocked, as per our wishes, when we arrived. The bedroom is spacious and the king bed is very comfortable. The ambience of the house is totally cozy and comfortable. There is even a washer and dryer, which was very convenient given our two-week stay on the Big Island. The cottage is located in a somewhat isolated and extremely lush area. The surrounding flora is magnificent. We loved the location--by the Parker Ranch--and had a great time exploring the northern area and Hilo side of the island. It also provided a convenient drive to Volcanoes National Park. The owner, Karin, is very gracious and took the time to get to know us. We had a very enjoyable visit wih her one afternoon. Having lived on the Big Island for many years, she is an excellent source of knowledge about places to go and things to see. If you love peace, serenity, lush surroundings, and all the comforts of home, Skandia Cottage is a wonderful place to stay!

Lovely respite on the slopes of Mauna Kea
Lovely respite on the slopes of Mauna Kea
Skandia Cottage was a truly lovely home-away-from-home, and a perfect place for a vacation on the Big Island. Centrally located between Hilo and Waimea, there is so much to see and do, or do nothing except stay "home" in the beautiful surroundings of the cottage. Situated on the slopes of the tallest mountain in the world, it is quite an amazing atmosphere in which to find oneself. The location is awe-inspiring, and the wonderful amenities provided by Karin made our stay perfect. The gorgeous yellow ginger flowers, both inside and outside the cottage were so beautiful, and the special decorative touches throughout the house added to the homey ambiance. Thanks, Karin for thinking of everything to make it such a great stay.

Owner response: It is 'ginger time' in Ahualoa, and we even have tourists come to experience their various scents and colors. I must also add that I have been privileged to host such enthusiastic ( and very caring) guests over the years. Mahalo!
Perfect stay at Skandia Cottage
Perfect stay at Skandia Cottage
The cottage is pleasant, clean and with everything you need for a short stay. Probably at 1200' elevation, and with areas of forest nearby, Skandia is in a cool and quiet upland spot. At intervals, Mauna Kea is visible out the living room window. It is a short drive to Hamakua Forest Reserve where one can do a little hiking, or of course to Waipio Valley. Dining choices back in Waimea include the Red Water Cafe. In nearby Honokaa there is sometimes live music in the People's Auditorium. We were very happy to spend a long weekend here.

Owner response: Good to hear from another happy guest. We are actually twice as high as Steve's guess, at 2500 feet. Something to take into consideration if altitude is a problem, although this is considered to be the perfect height for Swiss health spas !
Wonderful Place to Stay!
Wonderful Place to Stay!
This house is incredibly clean and equipped with everything you might need. Everything worked well! The beds were comfortable as was the whole house. It is surrounded by beautiful trees and in a beautiful area. Karin left us fresh fruit and other items for breakfast, she even warned us to bring a sweater because there was snow on the mountain. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone.

Owner response: We do work hard to keep the cottage spic and span, and guests usually leave it in very clean condition, making our part easier! I must respond however to the recommendation for 'young children'. Because the back studio has a separate entrance, we feel that children should be at least 13 years of age... as is written " teen agers are welcome!"
My stay at the Scandia Cottage was very peaceful and relaxing. A great spot for experiencing the tropical side of the Island. The listing description was accurarte of the location and the photos accurately reflected the apprearance and amenties. The kitchen was very well stocked with any gadget and/or cooking tool you could hope for! The property was very clean and well maintained. Karin the owner was very helpful and available for anything I needed. Karin was very generous in providing my breakfast foods with a nice selection of fresh fruit and organic macadamia nuts from a local farm. I most definately recommend this property to anyone looking for a place to stay and if I have the opportunity to return to the Big Island I would definately stay here again! Mahalo Karin for your generous hospitality! With Aloha!!

About the owner: As a retired interior designer of Swedish-Dutch heritage, it was natural to design and build this cottage for my mother to her requirements and nostalgia for her homeland. Having lived on the big Island for over 37 years, my love for this area has remained steadfast. Guests of the Cottage feel the energy and special European touches which make it a welcoming experience. Writers, families, honeymoon couples, retired friends, all have had their own individual reactions, and all have been happy guests. As we say here- 'E Komo Mai'- Welcome! Please open the link for guest's comments.
Why the Owner Chose Honokaa:
This cottage was built for my mother so that she could be fairly close to our home after my father died. We had chosen this area originally for its privacy, green surroundings, healthy altitude and temperate climate.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Location is out of the 'vog zone',( typically around Kona) and temperatures are moderate without need of air conditioning. Access to beaches and scenic vistas are within a short drive, and Mauna Kea is visible as you walk the country road which fronts the Cottage.
