A little corner of bliss in the south of France.

La Maison des Templiers is a maison de village constructed in the 12th century outer rampart of the village of St. Maurice de Cazevieille. The beautiful old stone home has been completely updated and offers a covered pool, Wi-Fi, entertainment facilities, a BBQ and a modern kitchen with gas range. The elevated position of the home gives wonderful views of parkland and the surrounding vineyards of the Uzege. The village of St. Maurice de Cazevieille is 16 km. west of the city of Uzes in the heart of Uzege wine country with its ever changing vistas of vineyards, trees and fields.

Upon entering the house you arrive in the sun room with French doors opening onto the terrace and pool. Turning left into the house you enter the living room equipped with LCD TV, DVD player and Satellite TV and incredibly comfortable sofas. The living room has a wood burning fireplace and the house is heated with electric radiant heaters.

Descend 8 steps to the spacious dining area with a small balcony overlooking the park and adjacent to the dining room is the modern kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave/convection oven, dishwasher, gas cook top and coffee maker. Next to the dining room is an open office with computer printer and Wi-Fi access through Orange France. There is one bathroom downstairs with shower. On the mezzanine level is the first bedroom with double bed. Upstairs consists of 2 large bedrooms with built in closets and a large stone walled bathroom with bath.

The washer and dryer are located in the upstairs bathroom. Included in the house are internet telephone with free calls to North America, Pay-as-you-go cell phone, GPS navigation unit, 2 stereos that are MP3 player compatible, sun chairs, pool floats and towels. The pool is equipped with a safety alarm system.

St. Maurice de Cazevieille has an excellent bakery and butcher, a cafe and restaurant as well as a small grocery store. It is 15 minutes to Uzes to find supermarkets and other stores. The gently rolling countryside surrounding St. Maurice de Cazevieille is home to vineyards, stands of conical cypress trees, flowers, birds and a maze of small stone villages, many of which sell wine in tasting rooms in the “caves cooperatives”.

Nearby Uzes is a jewel of a town that combines 12th century history with a vibrant village life. The town is dominated by its chateau and fortress towers in golden stone and there is lively commerce around the town square and the ring road that encircles the town. Uzes was made a Duchy in 1572 and was classified as “Ville d’Art” in 1962. Excellent restaurants and lovely shops can be found in the most amazing ancient buildings with vaulted ceilings and in the case of one antique shop, the arches of an old church. Wednesday in Uzes is the farmer’s market in the town square where local delicacies, wine, cheeses, meat, fish and produce can be found. Spices spill out of cloth bags and there is always a table full of lavender in every form. Saturday is the big market day where the town square is packed with the Wednesday vendors as well as a great variety of Provençal china, fabrics and specialty foods. The streets of Uzes are taken over as well with vendors selling everything from clothing and shoes to hats, locally made lampshades and anything else you can think of. Cafes line the streets and make a nice spot to people watch.

Within a 30 minute drive from the Maison des Templiers is the Pont du Gard, part of the aqueduct system built under Claudius and Nero around 50 AD. The area around the Pont du Gard offers swimming, canoeing and kayaking on the River Gardon and many interesting audio visual presentations on the history of the area.

The cities of Nimes, Avignon and Arles are about a one hour drive from Maison des Templiers and the Provence cities of Salon and Aix en Provence are about 70 minutes away. The beaches of Montpellier, Sete, Aigues-Mortes and the wild and beautiful Saintes-Maries-de-La-Mer are all just over an hour away. Aigues-Mortes is an interesting village that boasts a history stretching back to the days when it was the launching point for the Crusades. The Camargue with its expanses of marshland and fields full of Camargue bulls for the “Feria” bullfights is also about an hour away.

Closer to St. Maurice de Cazevieille and worth a visit is the town of Anduze, renowned for its manufacture of large clay pots. The town has several cafes and restaurants and the countryside surrounding it on the edge of the Cevennes parklands is spectacular. Anduze is about 15 minutes west of the house. A 20 minute drive east of the house brings you to St.-Quentin-la-Poterie, a charming town near Uzes that has had a recent renaissance due to its very active pottery industry. The town added “la-Poterie” to its name in the late 19th century as a way of distinguishing itself from the other 31 towns of the same name in France while at the same time honoring the local industry. There is great diversity in the styles of pottery and most studios welcome visitors. The town has a nice mix of shops, cafes and restaurants and one of the best butchers in the Gard, the Boucherie Centrale. Try a sampling of his prize winning terrines. There is a covered market every Friday and a Local Producers market on Tuesdays during the summer season. Bicycle rentals are available in the village to explore the easy rolling hills in the area. St.-Quentin-la-Poterie makes for a nice day visit.

We spent the month of March in the Maison des Templiers, with our adult children and 2 month old grandson joining us for part of the time. The house is truly lovely...spacious, well-equipped, nicely decorated, and with the particular character of a renovated 12th century dwelling. We very quickly felt at home. Graham and Josie, the neighbours, and property caretakers were warm and hospitable and very helpful in suggesting day trips and activities. St. Maurice is a delightfull village, with access to pleasant walks in the countryside and a short drive to places of interest such as Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Arles, St. Rémy, Montpellier, and the Mediterranean. We loved the markets at Uzès and Sommières, and picking up our daily breakfast baguette at the boulangerie at the foot of the hillside pathway to our house. We felt we had an authentic experience of life and culture in the south of France. The people were friendly and encouraging with our attempts to converse in French. Even though March was unseasonably cool this year, we had an amazing time and we would love to return. Our spring sojourn at la Maison des Templiers was unforgettable..we can only imagine what a summer stay would be, with all the lush vineyards and beautiful trees in the area! A little piece of heaven!

We just returned from a week long stay in this beautiful home. The home is in a medieval village which is very scenic and historic. Booking, checking in and out were a breeze. We were five adults and the house was pleasantly large enough for us all to have space and socialize. We spent a lot of time around the table enjoying the views and the region's great wine. Thanks, Graham, for all your suggestions of restaurants and sites to see. I highly recommend this property for a lovely vacation.

We (2 couples) have just returned from our holiday in the South of France. This home is as represented or better. It is beautiful, character filled and well appointed. We enjoyed the pool, the lovely eating areas, the well equipped kitchen and the gorgeous views from every window. St. Maurice de Cazevieille is a stunning rural village affording you a taste of real life in France away from tourist traps and hotels. Driving to many neighboring towns and also bigger cities make wonderful daytrips. The property managers are lovely, helpful people who added to our overall experience. The owners kindly left champagne for us on our arrival. I had mentioned that we were celebrating a special anniversary. We hope to return again someday.

We have recently completed a wonderful two week stay at this charming, spacious and well-appointed house in St. Maurice. Communications and arrangements made with the owners were completed in timely, informative and capable manner. The local couple who manage the property for the owners were lovely, enthusiastic and terrifically helpful. They truly made our holiday that much better. We travelled with our two teenaged boys and our 15 month-old baby. We all loved the spacious kitchen, enjoyed the pool together and took advantage of the great TV and TV room to watch Euro 2012 soccer. We found St. Maurice to be a very friendly, authentic and non-touristy type of village. You are a short drive from Nimes and even shorter drive to Uzes, which both have the full spectrum of shopping and sites. Having rented vacation properties for 15 years or more, I can attest that this was the most finely appointed and well-equipped property we have stayed in. The property was clean and beautifully set up for us on our arrival. The photos do not do it justice, it is more spacious in person. The owners have thought of everything. If you are fortunate enough to stay at this property you will not be disappointed. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends, family or anyone else who would appreciate it.

We have used VRBO and other rental websites many times. We can honestly say this is one of the most special vacation homes we have ever rented. We were attending a wedding close to Nimes adn then staying for a family vacation. The house is charming and well equiped. The location is perfect for travelling around the surrounding areas. Bryan was extremely helpful ahead of our trip in terms of recommending local places and logistcs. He treated us like we were family and kept sending emails with great ideas for restaurants, sites, drives, activities. And Florence and JC who will meet you upon your arrival could not have been more helpful and charming. It was such a special way for three generations to share a trip to France. I write this review with reservation for fear it will no longer be available when we hope to return.

We loved it! There were seven of us: parents, 2 children w/spouses and a 4 month old grandson. What a delightful home! wonderful location, lovely little town. The house had everything we could have wanted--and a swimming pool Frances, the local manager, was very, very helpful and very patient with our French. We were late arriving because of a heavy rain (the only day it rained). She waited for us and cheerfully showed us the home. Everyone loved the home and didn't want to leave. We can't say enough good things about this home. We only wish that we had more time to spend there--and we look forward to returning!

Our stay at Maison de Templars lived up to and exceeded our expectations. Loved the region, rolling hills of vineyards, beautiful villages, all of the markets (in town and along roadside), Roman ruins and centuries old architecture. The vacation home itself was perfect for our family of 6, with a very nice kitchen for meals, a pool for the kids at the end of a day of adventure, spectacular views, and comfortable sleeping accomodations. Location was excellent with the bigger town of Uzes about 15 minutes away and smaller villages 2 or 3km apart in every direction. The location with many quiet country roads and nearby villages was excellent for my son and I to continue our marathon training, and would be an excellent base for bicycle touring. Loved the boulangerie 2 minutes walk from our front door and the church tower at the top of the hill with its charming bells throughout the day. And don't miss the pizza truck on Friday nights. Highlights for us were a day in Nimes (about 30 mins away) exploring the Arena and related Roman sites, market day and patio dining in Uzes, swimming, canoeing under the Pont du Gard, and a day trip to the beach on the mediterranean. Owner and caretakers were very helpful with plans to arrive from Paris and were available for any questions or help needed with the house.

So wonderful! Arrive to lovely bottle of wine... fall into bed... put my hand on the 12 century walls next to the bed, feel the breeze entering through the ancient portals/windows, hear the church bells chiming the hour, and am brought deliciously back in time... sleep with images of the sunset lit countryside of vineyards... and awake to the sounds of little French girls parading up an alley way outside my window... in sweet dresses, carrying their morning baguettes from the bakery a few yards away, laughing and chatting... the essence of charm. Such a beautiful area, and such a wonderful retreat for myself and my darling six year old, Tesla. Finding incredible wines in the profusion of vineyards, and beautiful old corkscrews to open the bottles in the antique shops of nearby Uzes... Meeting the attentions of many young and handsome Frenchmen, who were eager to escort my daughter and myself through the unending charms of the area! And it should be noted that my canine loving daughter would love to adopt the very adorable pup of the owners of this manse... his personality envelopes the place just in the abundance of photos and other memorabilia placed with loving care throughout! My thanks for a memorable time! I could go on and on! Janet

                      Why the Owner Chose Uzes:
The south of France has been a holiday destination for us for years and we fell in love with the Gard region on a trip there last year. The rolling landscape with its endless vineyards and ever changing vistas is charming and the village of St. Maurice de Cazevieille offers all the amenities needed to live a very relaxed life. Nearby cities of Uzes and Nimes as well as the Provencal cities of Avignon, Arles and Aix en Provence offer big city restaurants, shopping, movies and the charm of the southern French way of living. The wine in this area is outstanding.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
'Maison des Templiers' sits high in the outer ramparts of St. Maurice de Cazevieille affording wonderful views of the rolling countryside. The covered terrace pool is very private and is adjacent to an airy sunroom, great for summer meals. The thick stone walls of the home keep it wonderfully cool even in the heat of a July day. The home is beautifully appointed and decorated and makes a wonderful base for exploring the Gard, Provence and the beaches of the Mediterranean.
