My young daughter and I just finished our four night stay at this first rate cottage...we loved the soaking tub, heated toilet seat, and fluffy down duvet...such a cozy and inviting place to call home after long days of sightseeing and walking all over Kyoto! The location is fantastic...convenient to everything including public transportation...the guidebooks and binder full of useful information were very helpful as was he use of the washing machine...we loved every minute of our stay and cannot imagine a better place to realize our kyoto dreams!

This cottage is superbly located, down a very quiet lane just off the road along Shirakawa stream. It is in a traditional neighbourhood, amongst local housing. We stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed every day, even if the weather was a bit cold and wet. The owner Wendy was very prompt responding to some queries we had while staying in the cottage. The information provided in advance of arrival was entirely accurate, both the description of the house, and of the location, that enabled us to find the house very easily in the dark, at 9pm on arrival. The location is quite excellent for a short visit to Kyoto. Many of the best sites are within walking distance, and there is a subway station at 2 minutes walk for those places that are a little further afield. There are a few small restaurants nearby, but we did find ourselves going a little further afield for most meals. We did find several excellent places within 15-20 minutes walk. (Best food we had was at Kashiku Cordon Bleu near Nanzenji temple.) The best part of staying in this cottage is NOT staying in a hotel. This may or may not be an authentic machiya, but it certainly gives you a very good feel for life in a traditional house in Kyoto. The decor seems quite traditional, yet provides all the mod cons you might require for a short stay. In winter, heating was quite adequate even for a couple of Queenslanders coming up to Japan from a 33 degree summer at home. Certainly the house is small - but this is Japan. If you want a McMansion, go to Texas. Having been to Japan before, and stayed in private homes there, this property actually turned out to be slightly larger than I expected. On the down side - cooking facilities are fairly limited. We had no intention of cooking, so this did not bother us, but if you wanted to, there's one electric frying pan and a microwave, no stove. Absolutely would recommend this place.

It is a shame that the bad reviews are even on here because they are simply untrue. I do not know how you could stay at Shirakawa Cottage and not love it. We were a family of three and very comfortable there. The cottage was spotlessly clean and beautiful. We LOVED the immersion tub and found it so relaxing. The bed was very comfortable. You have all amenities, heated toilet seat, washer/dryer, electric tea kettle, coffee pot, microwave. We were so close to the train station and there are many many things to see around Kyoto at every corner. You can walk to Chion temple, Gion district, an undercover market, post office for international ATM transactions...all from the Cottage. Wendy was quick to respond to any questions, we had no issues and would happily stay there again, we very much enjoyed our time in Kyoto.

We were looking for a two week immersion experience in Kyoto and were very happy with our stay. The cottage is incredibly well located (close to subway and walking distance to many sights) and is very comfortable and we really appreciated having the washing machine. The neighborhood is amazingly quiet and we were able to sleep with the windows open without being disturbed. It is important to know that it is a machiya - it is relatively small and dark compared to modern western design. One very big highlight for jazz fans is a local listening bar called Hanaya on the south side of Sanjo Dori just west of Higashioji Dori. We also really enjoyed a wonderful izakaya called Bamboo that is a couple of blocks closer to the cottage.

Excellent, it was exactly as described. The owners put alot of work into modernizing it while keeping the "old feel" (i.e. plumbing, AC, hand painted tiles etc). It was such a nice change of pace from staying in the downtown cores of big cities. You could call it the "suburbs" but within easy walking distance to major Kyoto sights (Kiyomizu-dera, Heian-Jingu, Gion). Also there is a grocery store a 15 minute walk away so we cooked some nights in order to save money. The map with directions we were given was excellent as it included street shots making it much easier to find the site. Highly recommended (for 2 people, it would be too small for more)

I very much enjoyed my stay at Shirakawa. The owners are very friendly and easy to contact. The cottage was clean and quiet. It is within two/three blocks of a subway station, which was very convenient. I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed at Shirakawa Cottage for a total of 6 nights in April 2012. As described, the property is in close proximity to a number of interesting sights, particularly the Philosopher's walk, Nen's steps (to Kiyomizudera), Gion Corner and also Pontocho. It is also close to the Higashiyama subway and a number of major bus routes, including Kyoto station (handy if you may choose to spend a day in Osaka or Nara). There is also a 24 hour convenience store within a 5 minute walk. The property is in a very quiet location and we found it perfectly safe. The property is of reasonable size and well maintained. Some areas of improvement (from our perspective): 1) the colour scheme is rather dull, particularly the dark brown bedding. For one of our days, we had a torrential downpour and had to stay in for most of the day and we would have preferred the decor to be a little more cheery. Also, as neighbouring properties are very close it is not possible to open the front screens. 2) There is a tv provided but it is only for watching dvds. It would be nice to have access at least to local stations. 3) There aren't many restaurants close to the property and we tended to eat in the downtown, Pontocho, Gion areas. 4) The kitchen does not have a cooktop, and we would have appreciated if at least an electric fry pan was included, so that we could prepare a hot breakfast. 5) There isn't a telephone, so we had to use our cell phones or the internet to communicate. (A usb internet device was provided for our use.) The property is reasonably priced and if you are in Kyoto for a few days and wish to maximise your time, I would recommend this property. We have stayed in similar properties in other parts of the world and having these simple "luxuries" would have made our stay a lot more enjoyable. Generally, the property gave us a meaningful experience of living in a machiya, however, for us we would prefer to stay in hotel facility particularly for a stay of a week or so.

    Recommended for: Sightseeing

Owner response: Well- you certainly have a lot to say. Most people love the decor although it is light absorbing, especially on rainy days. Cheeriness can come from within although i guess Australians aren't used to being stuck inside on a rainy day.It is perfectly fine and easy to open the front screens, most people do. The neighbouring houses are close indeed however there are only 2 neighbours, both old and the cottage is at the end of the lane, no traffic. There are many, many restaurants within 5 mins walk. The famous Bamboo, Azuka & Miyako all within 2 mins and at least a dozen others of all varieties, cheap , Kaiseki, French/Japanese fusion. Just go and look. We do provide an electric frypan on request. Most guests don't need one. Having a landline telephone is not necessary and difficult for foreigners to use. As you said you had cellphones and internet, surely enough? I think your blaming me and the cottage for the rain. I also would prefer you stay in a hotel, however in a hotel you can't cook at all, no toaster or microwave or electric frying pan. You can not open the sliding windows in a hotel and a hotel does not provide DVD's of Japanese movies in English. Certainly worse being stuck in a hotel room if it rains.

My husband and I were extremely pleased with the accommodations at the Shirakawa Cottage during our recent two-week stay in Kyoto. The cottage was just as described on this website -- very clean; small, but perfectly adequate for two people; traditionally Japanese in character; and superbly located. Rory provided excellent guidance to the local area, including detailed maps, walking routes and teahouse suggestions. The convenient access to a multitude of sites in the surrounding historic districts and the nearby Higashiyama subway stops were invaluable to us. The cottage was comfortable and inviting, and we appreciated having a place to relax and rest our feet for a while in the afternoons without having to stray far from the lovely sites of Kyoto.

Owner response: Thankyou very much Megan, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm working continually to improve my maps and information for guests.

Shirakawa Cottage is a cosy two-room cottage in the heart of Kyoto. It's a wonderful base to explore Kyoto as the location is terrific. There's so much nearby, but it's still so peaceful at night. The walk down the little lane-way and past the "White Stream" is also a charming way to start the morning. You could even leave your guidebook at home as there are several excellent books and other information on-hand in the cottage. Rory is a friendly and very considerate host. The renovation work inside the cottage is lovely and the bed is very comfortable. It's spotlessly clean, and the neighborhood is completely safe at night. We had a lovely time staying here and recommend it highly. We hope to stay longer next time.

Owner response: Thankyou very much Robyn. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and yes the White Stream is very pretty. I am working hard at the moment compiling a folder of 'other information on hand' for guests. Kyoto Through Blue Eyes -.hidden places, hike trails , restaurants &cafes and so on.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Shirakawa Cottage and found it to be as advertised and more. Down a short laneway on Shirakawa River, the cottage is ideally located for walking to Gion, the Kyoto National Museum, numerous shrines, a nearby covered market and great local restaurants. I did a lot of walking while in Kyoto; Rory was very helpful in pointing out places to see and provided handy take-along maps. The cottage is neatly kept, has modern conveniences, but maintains a traditional touch; perfectly sized for solo travelers or couples. During my time there Kyoto was hot, but Shirakawa Cottage stayed nice and cool - welcome relief after a day of sightseeing. Private, safe, and in a quiet neighborhood, I absolutely recommend Shirakawa Cottage and would gladly stay there again. Cheers and happy traveling.

THE PLACE The description is so deceiving. The pictures make the place look so much larger than it really is. Because the photos show the rooms separate one has the impression they are all separate. All the rooms are together. we should have asked how many square feet there are. We measured just short of 300 Sq. ft and that's including the garden. It's size would be adequate if the place wasn't so DARK. Everything is brown and dark and gloomy, including the sheets. Very depressing. Definitely not enough lighting. The bathroom is awkward and not practical. The iron tub is too small and hard to fill with hot water as it is made of iron and therefore cold. We gave up on the bath. Not a pleasant place to stay at. After 2 weeks we couldn't wait to leave. Actually, we were ready to leave after a couple of days. PAYMENT We had a hard time changing our dollars into Yen at the bank to pay the rent because we didn't have a proper address or phone number from the owners. The bank would not budge. The owner could have been a more helpful in this regard. Actually, the owner should have a credit card payment set up, then we wouldn't have had the problem with the bank to start with. Japan or not Japan, there is credit card payment in Japan. You can go to the convenience store around the corner and charge a payment of less than a 1000 Yen. So why not rent ? The positives were that it is in a convenient location. It is quiet. The tiles are pretty. There is a computer with internet connection. Disappointing on many levels.

Owner response: To prospective guests -please ignore this review. These people were unfortunately PSYCHOLOGICALLY UNSUITABLE FOR TRAVELLING. Everything was too different from their little town and their mindset. The disliked everything including Kyoto, me and the house. The issues- yes the house is small, very small as inner city Kyoto houses are. They are not the huge rambling houses you may find in U.S countryside or in European villages. The bedroom is seperated from the kitchen dining area by sliding doors , keeping light , noise and cooking smells out. Most people love the bath- and it is easy to fill with hot water -just turn the tap on! The bath is Japanese size maybe not suitable for extra large people. They state the place is depressing- this is simply a reflection of themselves, their state of minds. It is dark, as Kyoto houses tend to be. The traditional materials of woven bamboo, ceiling, aged timber framing, walls of bamboo tied with wisteria vine covered in clay/ rice straw mix are light absorbing. The main lighting was very bright however a previous guest replaced the bulb with a softer one- as it was too bright- what do you do, who do you please? We are considering putting in a skylight however its a little like putting an elevator in a castle. Payment -THE REAL ISSUE- they forgot to take (not that they didnt have) the printout of the address and phone number supplied, to the local bank, 5 min walk- . They stated 'the bank would not budge' Nor should it budge for an illmannered foriegner. The bank would not change US dollars without an address and this made them extremely angry. Japan is essentially a cash society and banks are very strict. HOWEVER the flip side of this is that there are no muggings, breaking and entering, stealing etc. You can leave your wallet, camera, laptop, mobile on a table outside a cafe and leave it and no one will take it. They demanded we take their credit cards which we dont accept at this stage as the fees here are 7% plus. They had a TEMPER TANTREM when we wouldn't/couldnt They also state they wished to leave after 2 days , this is truely bizarre as they EXTENDED THE ORIGINAL BOOKING BY 3 DAYS at the end of their stay. Im happy to forward the emails to prove it. My little house, Kyoto and Japan are not for everyone. Regards Rory & Sayaka - Kyoto lovers

The cottage was just as described, although a little more charming than I'd expected. The garden was sweet, the bath and toilet were nice, the bedroom was lovely, and the kitchen was small, and fully functional with all we needed and just as described. And the place was spotless. The handmade tiles in the kitchen and toilet were a surprise and a lovely bonus. The location was greatr, a 5 minute walk to the subway, easy access to the Path of Philosophy and lots of other sights, easy nearby markets. And it was very quiet down the little alleyway that holds the cottage. Rory's directions to the cottage were excellent, and he was most helpful, as was the info left in the cottage for reference. Truly an excellent time in Kyoto, thanks to the ease and comforts of the cottage. I'd confidently recommend this to friends, and hope to go back.

Owner response: Thank you we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We also enjoyed making the tiles, they are recent edition to the cottage. Sayaka painted the 'Frolicking Animals' from Japan's most famous scroll painting.

My wife and I stayed at the Shirakawa Cottage January 2, 2011 through January 6, 2011. Let me start by saying that the Cottage is located in the best sight-seeing location in Kyoto. The value of being right in the middle of the Gion District, Southern Higashiyama, and close to Northern Higashiyama is priceless... The Cottage is very clean, located down a small alley near the local train station (not JR line). The pictures are very representative of the Cottage, so I will try to write about the "unwritten" thing that could be helpful to travelers: (1) When you enter the cottage, you will be standing in a small entrance way when you can leave your shoes. You then step up 1 step into the kitchen where there is a small sink, microwave, and toaster. There is a small kitchen table and Rory provides a netbook computer for use during your stay. This was extremely helpful as my wife and I planned our JR train route to other destinations. There is a sliding door that separates the bedroom from the kitchen area. Upon entering the bedroom, the double bed (not a queen, but plenty big for 2 people) is on the right side of the room. On the left side of the room is a dresser with a TV/DVD player. In front of you is a window that peers into a small zen garden. When you pass the bed, you will see two doors. The door on the left is to the washroom where there is a sink + toilet with heated seats. The door to the right is to the shower room where there is a soaking tub and shower head. (2) Two of the best walking trails are located near this Cottage -- the Southern Higashiyama tour and the Northern Higashiyama tour. Many of the "must see" sights are on these walking tours, so you cannot beat the location of this place. (3) Rory provides a Lonely Planet guide that is a color edition with many photos. However, this edition does not include all of the restaurant recommendations of the full "Japan" edition of Lonely Planet. I would recommend buying the full edition so that you can take full advantage of the wonderful restaurants near this cottage! (4) The JR line does not stop at the local train station. You will arrive at Kyoto station and then have to take the local train to Kurasuma Oike. Then transfer again to another line to get to the cottage. I thought some of this information would be very helpful. Great location!!!

Owner response: Thanks Richard, yes Shirakawa Cottages location near the corner of 'Nenes Path (the main historical path) and Sanyjo Dori (the original Tokaido Highway, Japan's main road) which leads straight to the main shopping and restuarant area is very handy indeed. I also have added a full version of the Japan Lonely Planet guide.

We stayed for 2 weeks at Shirakawa Cottage. It was all as described on the website, if not better. The location is just perfect as it is within walking distance to so many places. Strolling along the Shirakawa in the mornings and evenings was just wonderful for us. If you are thinking of staying, we are sure you will love it as we did. Rory was a mine of information and was happy to share his knowledge. It was close to so many reasonable and good restaurants, our favourite being Bamboo. We have very special memories of Shirawara Cottage. Thank you Rory!

We spent 3 days at the Shirakawa cottage and like others before us really enjoyed the experience. It is perfect for 2 people, very clean, authentic and Rory was extremely accommodating. The setting near the river and bridges is quite lovely. Wish we would have known the specifics of cheaper food places, maybe that info could be included in the helpful notebook that is available. The travel book on old Kyoto was a treasure trove of info not included in our own books. We loved having access to the washer/dryer, always nice when you are on the road. The location is excellent for most excursions and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. We have already recommended this property to friends.

The cottage in incredibly located in the middle of Higashiyama, so you could go wandering on Philosopher's trail, wander the main Higashiyama temples, see Gion and go out late in Pontocho or shopping on Kawaramachi without ever getting on a bus or in a taxi. Perfect location and lovely to see the Shirakawa canal when you walk out every morning. Tthe cottage was designed with traditional influence in design and the accomodation itself is perfect for a couple and comfortable, much better than a hotel. As a note, while in a perfect laneway by the Shirakawa canal, and with a machiya old fashioned front, its quite adapted for westerners inside so if you're looking for a traditional japanese stay, make sure to stay in a traditional accomodation or ryokan while in Kyoto. Rory just completed the master job of redesigning the place, so there could be a few small improvements in the house such as labeling appliances and area information but overall, would recommend the cottage as a great place to stay while in Kyoto. Aloha all, we recently stayed at the Shirakawa cottage and had a great experience, the location and amenities at the cottage are good, there are open markets within walking distance and many of the shrines and castles are just a walk away. There are several excellent restaurants within walking distance, our favorite one was Bamboo, a little expensive but the Chef/Owner does an excellent job combining Japanese modern cuisine with other flavors. You can not go wrong there. We also loved the Mochi place located just around the corner from the Cottage as well as the Tofu place across the Stream.... The kitchen in the Cottage is good enough to make a quick sandwich or small breakfast, however if you are looking to make a full meal this kitchen will not do it for you. There is a Microwave oven but there are no pots or pans available. Other than that a wonderful place to stay. Rory does a good job making sure that you have a great stay and he is very accommodating to your needs, he has several suggestions on where to go and what places to eat at. The Cottage is also very close to Pontachon and the Gion districts where the night life takes place. I would recommended this property to anyone, I think the value is great!

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner response: Thanks Eddie- the kitchen has a kettle, toaster, coffee maker, microwave. The kitchen is kept simple and very clean as we find most people happy to eat out for lunch and dinner at the many and varied restaurants and cafes nearby. As with most of Asia it is cheaper to eat out than buy ingrediants and cook. With kaiten sushi at $US1.20 a plate and cafes and restaurants offering interesting variety of Western, Japanese and Chinese meals from $US 8.00. The cheap Japanese restaurant chains like Yoshinoya offer large meals from $US3.00, great value! I'm yet to find a bad meal in Kyoto The last time I ate at Bamboo it was $180 for 3 people and that included lots of drinks (and lots of food). The individual plates were around $4.00/$8.00 A large part of the Kyoto experience is the food. Beats cooking! As is said before those who wish or need to cook we can happily supply cooking utensils.
