This 1864 River Town 3 bedroom Victorian was completely restored and modernized in 2002. The remodeling received an award from the Lake City Historic Preservation Committee. The house has modern amenities along with the charm of its past. There is a partial view of Lake Pepin from the kitchen and deck facing the spacious back yard. The house is located on historic Oak Street in Lake City. There are two large full bathrooms. One bedroom is on the first floor near the first floor bathroom. The master bedroom is huge with 4 windows and both a queen bed and a day bed. The floors throughout the home are wood which was refinished in 2002. (Except for the tiled bathrooms.)

There is a large 2 car garage as well as ample driveway parking.

Lake Pepin is a naturally occurring lake, and the widest naturally occurring part of the Mississippi River, located approximately 60 miles downstream from Saint Paul, Minnesota. It is a widening of the river on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The formation of the lake was caused by the backup of water behind the sedimentary deposits of the Chippewa River's delta. It has a surface area of about 40 square miles (100 km2) and an average depth of 18 feet (5.5 m), which makes it the largest Lake on the entire Mississippi River.

The wide area of the lake stretches from Bay City, Wisconsin, in the north, down past Pepin, Wisconsin, and Reads Landing, Minnesota, in the south, with Pepin being just upstream from where the Chippewa River enters the Mississippi. The villages of Maiden Rock and Stockholm border on the Wisconsin side, while Frontenac State Park takes up a large part of the Minnesota side. The largest city on the waterfront is Lake City, Minnesota.

There are three marinas on the lake: the Lake City Marina, and Hansen's Harbor, both in Lake City, and Dan's Pepin Marina in Pepin, Wisconsin. There is also a private dock for the customers of the Pickle Factory restaurant in Pepin. Sailboats and the paddlewheel boat "Pearl of the Lake" are common on the lake in summer. In the winter, there are ice roads that cross the lake.

Maiden Rock, on Lake Pepin, is one site said to be the locale where a Dakota woman named Winona leapt to her death.

Why the Owner Chose Lake City

Lake City is 60 miles from St. Paul Minneapolis so easy to drive there. It is also about 30 minutes from Rochester. Lake City is beautiful and historic. We loved to work on and restore a historic home.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The quiet in Lake City is immense. I love to watch the birds from the deck or walk to Lake Pepin and see the barges go by. It is amazing because it is both a lake and a great river. From Lake City the views of the Wisconsin bluffs are beautiful. It is a great birding area filled with eagles, great blue herons, egrets as well as orioles, wrens. There are also food coops with local food, weekly farmers markets, art galleries, great restaurants such as Nosh. There are also wonderful spots to eat lunch and breakfast on the waterfont. A free day can be spent travelling around 80 miles Lake Pepin visiting the small interesting towns on the Wisconsin or Minnesota side. Or go on the bike trails for a wonderful day along the Cannon River.

Owner's Map of Lake City

We bought a historic home in Lake City after spending years of going up and down the river on our free weekends. Lake City is beautiful and also has many services such as a large grocery store, coffee shops, a good library. We also like it that there was a historic preservation group protecting the heritage ot Lake City's amazing historic homes dating from the 1860s. We liked it that Lake City has the largest marina on the Upper Mississippi.

Wonderful time in Lake City !

I stayed in this lovely house with my niece and nephew and had a great time in this beautiful little town. This wonderful Victorian house was just perfect for us; large and quiet and very close to the lake; we walked down to the lake every night for a week! The house has everything a family needs to be very comfortable. We all loved the natural light in the house and the deck just off the kitchen. You can watch the fireflies from the deck at night! We all love to golf and playing "The Jewel" on the outside of town was real special for us! All in all, we had a wonderful time in Lake City. We would love to return next summer.

A VRBO that I wish I hadn't rented

Date of Stay: 08/05/11 Review Submitted: 08/26/11

I was one of 6 ladies that stayed there for 2 nights in August. We would not recommend this place to anyone. When we opened the door it smelled moldy and musty. The overall cleanliness was bad, from the refrigerator,to bugs in the kitchen cupboard, to filthy blinds in the kitchen, and all baseboards were dirty. The area carpet had a big red stain on it and was generally unclean. The kitchen curtains were badly wrinkled and either dragging on the floor or cut off and unhemed. The lawn was entirely weeds. We would have been pleased with mowed weeds, but they weren't even mowed. There was a definite lack of decorating. The kitchen cupboards were nice but not well supplied. The mattresses were good. One of the deck chairs had a broken back. We enjoyed hiking along the lake, participated in the local relay for life, and enjoyed the local restaurants.

Owner response:I am very sorry this happened. I had hired a local cleaner because I was out of town for 4 weeks. She started out well but then did not appear to be doing much cleaning so I let her go. This is the only time this VRBO has not been hands on and I guess it showed. I have enough dishes, etc for about 12 people so I think the supplies are good.

We all totally enjoyed our stay at your Lake City house. It was a great location to go out and do our day trips and a great, homey place to relax at the end of our day. If I ever am looking for accomodations in Lake City again, I won't hesitate to stay again.

Thank you f r a delightful environment for a 2 day get-away. Your attention to details was greatly appreciated- from the coffee in the jar by the coffeemaker to the wonderful selection of artworks on the walls. The gardens were meticulouly groomed and we enjoyed the blooms and the little finch who visited the feeder frequently. Everything functioned well and the short walk to town was perfect. The incredible day trips by car made this over the top!

It was great to unwind and explore the peaceful river towns around Lake Pepin. The house was very comfortable and it was nice to be within walking distance to anything we might need. The house reminded me of our old house in Minneapolis so I felt right at home. We had a great girls' weekend away.

Your town was a great place to unwind even with cloudy skies. Every bedroom had such a distinct character, it was hard to decide which on I liked best. We met a local artist, Ron Hunt, who charmed us all. People should drive from there to Buena Vista Park in Alma. It has awesome views of the Mississippi River Valley.
