Welcome to the tranquility of the Belgian Ardennes. Situated in the small hamlet of Wathermal in the province of Luxembourg, La Maison Charmante, our beautifully refurbished farmhouse, is the place to enjoy a quiet time of relaxation to ease your mind and sooth your soul. Within a short driving distance, there are several golf courses. The most popular one is in Clervaux, Luxembourg, about a 25 minute drive. For for more info (german, french, dutch) and pics, Google "homeaway wathermal". It will be at top of list - listing # is 382764.

The old, ivy laden walls typify this area farmhouse, built about 150 years ago. The one acre grounds are quiet and serene with plenty of wild strawberries, currents and lovely flowers. The large old trees afford lots of shade and privacy for private parties. There is a lovely pavilion below the house as well as a very functional, covered grill area.

Also on the property is the original “Bakhaus” where the neighbors would gather to bake their bread and share the latest news with one another. The oven is still in good working order and works equally well for baking pizza or “flammkuchen”, an Alsace specialty. This enchanting old structure, fitted with table and chairs, lends itself well to a delightful wine and cheese tasting experience. Lovely wines and cheeses, both local and from around the world are readily available. We are sure that you will find the prices of these two items definitely to your liking.

When you go into the house, you might imagine you have departed the Ardennes and entered Scandinavia. The previous owners of the property were engaged in constructing houses of Finnish design and materials so they decided to do the inside of the house in typical Finnish fashion. You could easily imagine that you are in a cozy cabin 2000 kilometers north of here. The wood makes for a very comfortable and cozy atmosphere which is very easily maintained as well as being warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By the way, don’t fret about cabin fever. The rooms are extremely spacious.

Upon entering, you will gaze down a great hallway beyond whose double doors lies the living room. There you will find a fireplace, billiard table, two comfy down filled couches and a flat screen TV complete will DVD player and satellite dish. Between the living room and dining room is an old baby grand piano made in Paris. Hopefully, someone in your party will play and the music and song will resonate throughout the house. This “great room” is a wonderful area for entertaining. The kitchen is fully appointed with all the usual amenities. There is, of course, a dishwasher and washing machine. There are four lovely bedrooms, each of which will sleep two adults and offer more room for children if needed. In one bedroom, there is a king size bed, in two other bedrooms, there are queen sized beds and in the forth one there is a crib and bunk beds. Additional infants bed and single bed are also available. Between two of the bedrooms is a full bath and between the other two is another full bath. Four couples can dwell here easily plus children if any are accompanying.

Now some information about our area: This lovely area wasn’t always so peaceful. It is full of history, also American history, which is sure to make you proud of your American heritage. We are situated just between Malmedy and Bastogne, two names which are immediately recognizable to students of World War Two. This is where over 70,000 Americans gave their lives in the Battle of the Bulge. Nearby is the place where General Patton relieved the embattled 101st airborne division who were on the brink of defeat. (google patton bastogne 12/25) Incidentally, General Patton is buried, along with 5,075 other valiant American soldiers, about an hours drive south of here, in the American cemetery in the city of Luxembourg, where he also had his headquarters. (google luxembourg american cemetery) When you visit the monument and museum in Bastogne (google american memorial bastogne), you will come to appreciate even more the “greatest generation”. Thanks to them, we can live here and you can come for a visit.

Three countries are within a few minutes drive. You can wake up in Belgium, shop in Germany and Luxembourg and be back home for lunch. One hour to the north brings you to Maastricht in the Netherlands where on Wednesdays and Fridays you may enjoy a wonderful market. If you want to venture out a bit further, here are some approximate driving times to popular destinations: Brussels - 1 1/2 hours; Trier (oldest city in Germany)- 1 hour; Bruges(Venice of the North) 2 1/2 hours; Cologne or Dusseldorf - 2 hours, Strasbourg - 3 hours; Paris - 3.5 hours; Basel - 5 hours. If you prefer to travel by train, there are excellent connections from Gouvy - 5 minutes.

There are numerous Michelin rated restaurants located in the area. This area is not only beautiful but also truly a gastronomic delight.

We offer payment per Pay Pal, the easiest and most cost effective payment method.

Our group of eight adults (3 couples and 2 singles) spent 4 nights in this spacious and modern house. Our travels in Western Europe included five rentals in 20 days and this was easily the best one. All rooms were large and comfortable, including the bedrooms, living room, kitchen and dining area. The house was exactly as advertised and yet we were still impressed and appreciative of this rental. The only drawback is there was no shower, only tubs, so getting 8 people out the door early in the morning took some coordination. All amenities, complete kitchen, dish washer, 2 full baths, clothes washer, Wi-Fi, TV, DVD player, parking, were as advertised. Ken, the owner, personally walked us through the property on our arrival ensuring we were familiar with every aspect of the house and shared plenty of useful information about the area, e.g., where to shop, get gas and general directions. Highly recommended. When our group returns to the Ardennes, this is the first place we will check for availability.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner response: Any group that the Graybeals bring will always be welcome at our property. We have a special place in our hearts for those coming to the Ardennes carrying memories of loved ones who fought and sometimes died here. The people here still remember their liberators. They have not forgotten the Greatest generation. Neither should we Americans forget. When you see what happened here, it makes you proud to be an American, a feeing that we do not often experience back home in the USA. We hope to welcome you all again.

We were here to retrace our father's journey through WWII. What a perfect location for us to have so many great day trips - Luxembourg - Bastogne - Netherlands - the list goes on! The house was everything the pictures showed and Ken said it would be. And what a great treat to be in Wathermal for the Annual Trout Festival - even the rain didn't ruin the spirit of Les Amis of Wathermal!! Ken and Roseanne - we are so sorry we didn't get to meet you but what a great treat to meet your daughter and grandchildren - new friends for sure!! Hope to get back to this area soon. Thanks for helping make such great memories!! Being able to spend our days in easy distance to our location and then to have such a great place to come back to each evening helped keep our vacation relaxing!!

Owner response: This is the first group that we did not meet. Our daughter and grandchildren told us what a great group you were. So, I guess you will just have to come back for another stay. We hope so anyway. You are always welcome. Thanks for leaving the house in perfect condition.

Dear Ken, We come on in the evening but you are us a very warm welcome in their house. You show us the house. The livingroom was nice and warm. We spend a lot of time on the billiards table and one of us play piano. In the kitchen everything wy need was there. The bedrooms were big and the bed sleep very well. May be you kan put a chaire and a small lamp in some rooms. Fine that the Bathrooms have towels soaps and paper. We celebrated Christmis and 2 birthdays Five minutes from the hous were big supermarket were you kan buy everything you need. There is enough space for playing with childeren special the long hal where you can playing footbal with the soft bal. The weather was not so nice but we walking with the childeren to the horses every day. We have visted Luxembourg ,Beho Church and some off smal villages. We spent a lovely week in this large and comfortable house in Wathermal last summer. We were struck by the kindness with which the owners of the house responded to our questions before we booked, and by their flexibility with respect to our time of arrival and departure. On top of that, we enjoyed a warm welcome. The house is cosy and spacious and offers plenty of opportunities for both an active and a quiet holiday. The surroundings are ideal for walking and biking. Facilities for shopping etc. are not far away. The owners were very kind and obliging, during our stay as well as afterwards, and clearly appreciate having guests who care for their rural and distinctive property. The garden is large, but when we were there, it was not quite finished. We had ample opportunity to play with the children in the garden, but for a game of soccer, for instance, you have to be in good shape (because of the slope). Everything was there for a good holiday: a clear and reasonable agreement, clean and well-maintained, very friendly customer service, and good facilities and amenities. We definitely consider going back to Wathermal and would indeed recommend this property to friends and relatives.

Owner response: It was our pleasure to have such wonderful guests. They are definitely welcome back any time. Next time, the garden will be finished.

Our stay in this lovely stone and ivy farmhouse was very restful after a week of touring Paris, Brussels and Brugge. Situated near the German and Luxembourg border, it made a convenient location for day trips to key historic sites. We enjoyed shopping at two nearby food markets and preparing our own "home-cooked" meals in the spacious, well-equipped kitchen. We used the gas grill and gazebo several times for fun cookouts. I appreciated the washing machine to catch up on laundry(can't escape it!), and the deep tub for a relaxing candlelit bath! The flower adorned crossroads of Wathermal are quaint and quiet, providing miles of scenic walking, jogging and biking routes. The church bells and occasional "mooing" cow were delightful adornments to this beautiful rural location. My two teenage children enjoyed sampling our host's generous DVD collection. The spacious bedrooms and floor plan provided plenty of quiet privacy. This home offered everything we needed for a perfect vacation!

La Maison Charmante certainly lives up to its name. The house is spacious, beautifully decorated, and extremely well-equipped. Cooks, musicians, and billiards experts will especially have a ball here, as the baby grand piano, pool table, and all sorts of utensils, dishes, and kitchen appliances are not features one normally finds in rental properties, especially in Europe. We spent a lot of time outdoors, and the property itself encourages that (lawn, beautiful flowers, garden chairs, grill), but even had it rained the entire time, we would have had a great time indoors. Ken did a terrific job in making sure we were comfortable and in providing us with our favorite movies from his vast collection. We had a wonderful vacation and will surely be back.

We gathered in Wathermal for a family & friends reunion during the Christmas and New Year of 2010. We had never been to the Ardennes and since I was the group’s coordinator, I was a bit nervous. When we walked into the Pittman’s homely rental, exhausted from our long car ride from Bruges, we were utterly relieved and surprised at how beautiful the home was. A gorgeous baby grand piano stood in the center of the family room. The bedrooms were tastefully furnished and Christmas decorations adorned the whole house. They even had an iPod docking station! The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed to feed a large group. We spent 8 days amid snowflakes and snow ski’s. This was the most relaxing part of our trip to Belgium. Thank you to the Pittman’s.

The 5 of us - two adults and three young children - stayed at this excellent vacation home in Wathermal in August. The home is spacious and very well cared for, with plenty of room outdoors for the kids to run (including a small playground just down the street). The location is fantastic - an ideallic setting in the breathtaking Ardennes, with easy drives to Bastogne and Luxembourg. And the best part of our stay was meeting Ken and Roseanne, who set a new standard in hospitality. They are very knowledgeable about the area, and they went out of their way to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. We highly recommend visiting them and their vacation property.

My Husband and I were here in May 2010 and we were blown away by the attention to detail. The kitchen is huge and very modern, the dinning room and living room are open with beautiful views over looking the back yard and country side. The walls are covered in lovely knotty pine and the floors are all solid wood too. There are 2 comfortable down couches in the living in front of the fireplace where you can sit and chat or watch TV or watch your friends play pool! This is a great location for visiting the WWII sites and touring the Ardennes. The bedrooms are decorated nicer than most homes! Why stay in a hotel when you can stay in a beautiful house with all the comforts of home! They have made this house turn key ready....all you will need is your clothes and toiletries! We loved it!

About the owner: We have been in this area for the past 15 years. Rosanne grew up in the Boston area - Ken in western North Carolina. We live 5 minutes from the rental property in another old farmhouse that we spent 3 years renovating. We have 6 children, 7 grandchildren, 3 horses, 2 dogs and a cat. We love this area because it is so peaceful. It reminds us of the days when we grew up in America - when there were fewer lawyers, less media and more time. Ken plays guitar and fly fishes. Rosanne loves decorating and is a gourmet cook. If our schedules line up, you might even get to enjoy one of Rosanne's extraordinary meals. Come on over - relax and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of former times. Ken and Rosanne

              Why the Owner Chose Ardennes:
We chose this rental unit because it is ideal and nearby.
