Take in the wonders of Colonial Merida while staying in your very own modern Mayan temple nestled in the heart of the Historic District (the second largest in all of Mexico) only 4 blocks from popular Santiago Square and a short stroll to the Plaza Grande. For your benefit this house is lovingly cared for and managed by the owners.

Referencing both Frank Lloyd Wright's Mayan-inspired textile block homes and classic Mid-Century Modern design, this home is unlike anything else in Merida. Carefully designed to capture the essence of indoor/outdoor living while maintaining maximum comfort, this home is tucked behind a four meter high facade with all of the living spaces centered on the completely private interior courtyard or walled rear garden. With a large open concept living/dining area, multiple exterior terraces, separate library, 2 air conditioned bedrooms with large en-suites and private gardens, and a full-size pool this home comfortably accommodates 2 couples giving plenty of space for relaxing together or having quiet time alone.

Your stay here begins by waking to the sounds of birdsong, perhaps even the local wild green parrots. Start your day preparing exotic local fruit in the open concept kitchen with European appliances and walk-in pantry. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the garden, perhaps a dip in the pool and then head out to explore Merida. Return home in the late afternoon to recharge, slide open the 3 metre high glass living room wall and enjoy your indoor/outdoor oasis. Refresh yourself in the pool, enjoy a book on the terrace, watch a movie or TV series from the DVD library or simply nap on the outdoor loungers. Start your evening with cocktails while enjoying the tropical breezes that wash the home each night. Then stroll to one of Merida's fantastic restaurants or stay home and create your own fine dining experience with fresh ingredients from the local market. Dine at the table for six (you may have already met new friends!) overlooking the glow of the pool and garden lights and the splashing of the courtyard fountain. When you are ready to call it a night, choose either the front bedroom with a french doors overlooking the interior courtyard, private interior garden and large en-suite with oversized shower or the rear bedroom with an over-sized en-suite, walk-in closet (with direct access to the laundry room) and a beautiful view out to the garden and pool. Get a good nights rest in a luxurious king bed and you will be ready for the next day of your Yucatan adventure.

There are so many things to see and do within a short distance of this home that even a stay of a month leaves you having to pick and choose. In Merida itself you can walk to the Plaza Grande or one of the many other colonial squares dotted throughout the city, explore the many museums and art galleries, take in the hustle and bustle of the market district and discover wonderful Yucatecan cuisine. Take a horse-drawn carriage along grand boulevards and marvel at the mansions of henequen barons. Or just walk the streets and take in the different barrios, each a photographers candy store. At night something is happening every day of the year, so whether you feel like the symphony or salsa dancing the choice is yours.

Outside of Merida, the Yucatan peninsula offers something for everyone. Head to Uxmal, an hour away and the 'undiscovered' Mayan city more wondrous than Chichen Itza with a tenth of the crowds. Walk the deserted local beaches half an hour outside of town. Take a hacienda tour, explore vast caves, swim in a cenote, a crystal clear underground lake...the possibilities are endless!!

We've rented homes all over the world, and this is our most satisfying experience. It's well located for exploring Merida; but it's also a magnificently comfortable home for the hours, or days, when you just want to perfect your hedonism. The owners have built this rather new home with exceptional architectural and design skills. It looks good. It feels good. It functions well. It works from every perspective. A very satisfying virtue of this listing is that its photographs and video are perfectly accurate, without poetic perspectives. Relative to most comparable Merida properties, it's spacious, on a double lot. The swimming pool is large, with crystal clear cool water. The outside area is pretty and very private, permitting your suits to remain dry. Lovely plantings, inside and outside the house, offer a tasteful green and peaceful touch. We very much appreciated having a washer and dryer, often not available in other properties. The wireless internet connection functioned perfectly, and we often utilized the comfortable, private, and tasteful study. The air conditioning units in the bed rooms are a blessing. We slept better than we do at home! The owners have furnished this home with not only good taste, but with good quality elements: the linens and towels, the refrigerator and stove, the cooking and dining utensils, very adequate electrical outlets for recharging all of our gear. The inside garage is not only secure, but it's handy for loading and unloading. The owners prefer communication by e-mail, and during our one month stay we frequently sent questions or requests. They always replied within minutes, and with good grace and with valid information. We very enthusiastically recommend this home. If the system enables it, we'd be happy to have the owners put prospective renters in touch with us. After a one month stay, we have lots of perspectives and photographs we'd be happy to share.

We stayed @ Mayan Modern for ten days in February 2012. One steps into a quiet, wonderfully modern and completely private oasis complete with gourmet kitchen and rain forest bathroom from busy, bustling Merida. The indoors and outdoors blend seamlessly; the pool invites refreshment (or laps) all hours of the day. Can't imagine a more comfortable setting for our visit. Many thanks to Robert and Emile our gracious and (very) helpful hosts. Jane & Jim Barry, BC, Canada

We stayed @ Modern Mayan Masterpiece for ten days in February 2012. Although perfectly situated in the historical centre of busy, bustling Merida one steps into a quiet, wonderfully modern and absolutely private oasis (if you don't count the iguana) complete with gourmet kitchen, spacious master and rain forest bathroom. The indoors and outdoors blend seamlessly in every room; the pool invites refreshment (or laps) all hours of the day; a wonderful setting to base our Yucatan sightseeing from and to come home to. Many thanks to Robert and Emile our gracious, considerate and (very) helpful hosts.

My husband and I just returned from a week in Merida where we stayed at Modern Mayan Mastepiece. "Masterpiece" is the word: wonderful modernistic architecture, exquisite detail, immaculate, privacy, AND attentive and very helpful hosts. All this comes with bonuses that were important to us. 1) The location couldn't be better. We walked everywhere - to the main market, to local supermarkets, the Parque Santiago (excellent loncherias), galleries, the English Library, the Catherwood Museum, the zoo, bookstores and museums in El Centro. 2) To know you're returning from these busy walks to a serene, beautiful house does wonders for your sense of well being. 3) Very interesting wildlife - fireflies, parrots, doves, mystery mammals (local possums) - can be observed from the patio. 4) To know that your hosts are nearby and only too willing to advise and help is tremendously reassuring; getting to know them is even better. Modern Mayan Masterpiece is an oasis of calm and beauty in the midst of all that's happening in Merida. The house played the leading role in what was a wonderful vacation!

The plusses: The home was fabulous, the pool private, and large. You can leave your swim suit at home. Hated to leave. Our hosts were very helpful in getting us acclimated & settled in, with lots of tips on the area. Word to the wise; Hardly, anyone speaks English in Merida. It can be very frustrating if you don''t have some basic Spanish. Also, don't come without Pesoes. They Will not take dollars! We learned that the hare way. Robert, Emile. We had a great time. Thank you, bunches! Merry Christmas & Happy NewYear!

We had the wonderful experience of living in this home for two weeks over the Holidays. It felt like OUR home! The privacy, the comfortable furnishings... excellently appointed, contemporary decor .... private courtyard where local birds visited every morning! The kitchen was perfect... we love to cook and we had all the utensils that we would have at home ... Did we say we loved the Bar-B-Q ! The location of this home is absolutely ideal. We did not need a car at all....walked everywhere; it is minutes to the Gran Plaza, but on the edge of Centro so we were in a residential neighborhood and did not step out of the front door every day into the hustle-bustle of a shopping district. Santiago market is just a couple of blocks one direction and an excellent supermarket is a couple of blocks the other way... and the lovely Paseo Montejo area is just a few blocks north. When we did not feel like venturing out, a chill day at home was great!!!!! And, we can say that the owners are wonderful hosts! Every detail was attended to; we were given their invaluable restaurant recommendations!; they were available to help in any way... even with a surprise ride home one overly fun evening that we spent in town!!! ;) We recommend this home to anyone wanting their personal home experience in Merida... it is a wonderful way to have a true experience of this wonderful city!!!

I enjoyed the great conversations and good food. You two are most welcome any time and I look forward to your next visit. Thanks for the thoughtful review! Cheers, Emile.

This is the best VRBO property we have stayed in and we have stayed in quite a few all over the USA and Mexico. The owner is a designer so, with this said, the place is exquisite taste and very comfortable. The kitchen is a full kitchen and you have everything you need to cook even a gourmet dinner. The pool was very enjoyable and totally private. We really can't say more about this place except I wish Robert owned a VRBO property in all destinations.

Owner response: Wow Sue, that's some compliment! So glad you liked our place, even during the rainy season! And we too wished we owned a property in all destinations!! Hope to see you again next time you are in Merida.

If you are looking for a modern feel crossed with all the mexican pleasures while on vacation, staying here is a must! This home is immaculate, yet comfortable, and the pool/garden area is magnificent! I could have spent all my timing lounging on the terrace, enjoying the pool and garden. I love how the windows and glass doors, bring the outdoors in, while still offering all the privacy we desired. And the casita! Oh, so great! For two couples, this offers lots of privacy for everyone. The location is great also! We were able to walk to dinner every night, to the night markets, the Plaza Grande, Santiago Park, the zoo, the galleries. If you prefer to stay at home and enjoy the house, the modern supermarket (and pharmacy) were only minutes away. It was great to be able to enjoy breakfast (and some lunches) at home, before leaving on our daily adventures. We walked just a few minutes to pick up a tour bus to visit Uxmal (an absolute must, by the way), and a local cenote (gorgeous underground ponds, also a must!) If you want minimal or no driving at all, this is it! And the owners of the house are fantastic!!! They were very helpful with directions, and what to see and do while staying in Merida. And did I mention the house was spotless? Spotless! This was my first visit to Merida, and I loved it! And when I go back, I'll definately stay at this house again! Trust me, you won't be disappointed! Enjoy your vacation!

We were lucky enough to stay here for a week. We'd been in Playa del Carmen, and came after. It was easy to get bus tickets for a comfortable 3 hour ride. The house is gorgeous: spotless, and impeccably decorated. It was like staying in a show home. The huge bedrooms are at opposite ends of the house, so you have complete privacy at night. There's a wonderful outside area with pool, lounging furniture and eating area. We did cook a bit, and it was very convenient, as it's a complete kitchen, not a little hotplate affair. But there are also scads of lovely, reasonably priced restaurants nearby. We walked most days, down to the centre of town, over to the square for the night(I think it's Tuesday) when there's dancing. In the opposite direction, there's a zoo and park, as well as a food store with a very good selection. Everything is within easy walking distance. You can easily set up tours to outlying attractions, and the hotel right around the corner is a pick up point for most of the commercial tours. Merida is a wonderful city, and the colonial buildings are amazing. We spent a lot of time just walking and looking at the buildings. The owners are great resources and can give you lots of tourist tips for Merida and the surrounding areas. The price is a bargain, especially if you have 4 people. Definitely a great place to stay, whether you're relaxing or sightseeing, or even going for business.

About the owner: Having discovered Merida ourselves on a trip to the Yucatan we decided to make the move here full-time in 2008. Selling off all of our worldly possessions and driving 8000 kms from Vancouver, BC to Merida was only the beginning of our Mexican adventure and we have loved every minute of it. This city offers the best of historic and modern Mexico and the people are amongst the friendliest we have ever met. We know you will love your visit here, the hidden jewel of Mexico. Of course we are available to help make your stay in Merida more enjoyable, whether you just need directions, want help planning your stay or feel like chatting about Merida over a margarita!
