Mi Casa Es Tu Casa Hamaca
Casa Hamaca Guesthouse
Bed, Breakfast & Healing Center...A Unique Mayan Experience near the Ruins of Chichen Itza
Extra-ordinary lodging for independent travelers and small groups.
If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home. ~James Michener
The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing." ~Daniel J. Boorstin
The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see. ~G.K. Chesterton
Casa Hamaca Guesthouse, the city of Valladolid and the state of Yucatan are Friendly, Safe, Tranquil, and very Interesting.
Casa Hamaca is for travelers looking to experience the real Yucatan: the food, the culture, the customs, the language and the people.
Welcoming, Friendly, Affordable, Very comfortable
From the first moments of entering the grounds, you feel transported to another time and place. Casa Hamaca is a fusion of ancient Mayan culture and vibrant Spanish colonial; both experienced in modern-day comfort. Encounter surprise after delightful surprise as you walk through the jungle-like garden to the hacienda-style main building.
Casa Hamaca Guesthouse in Valladolid, Yucatán, is ideal for independent travelers and small groups. It's your home away from home if you are searching for a central location from which to explore the Yucatan.
The Stone Suite (or Tun Nich Na in Mayan) has a plush king bed, a spacious combination dressing room and bath with lots of hot water, ceiling fans and air conditioning, an original Yucatan-themed mural, masks and wall-hangings from around the world, a Mayan tortilla-making table, an authentic Mayan hammock in which to relax or nap, and wireless internet access. The theme of the Stone Suite is, of course, stone. A custom-built stone bed (with a very comfortable mattress) under a stone arch (with built-in reading lights) looks across to a stone table. The bathroom floor is tiled in natural red stone while the walls are tiled with fossil-filled white limestone from the quarries of the Yucatan. The spacious bathroom features a large built-in cedar closet with ample luggage storage. The Tun Nich Na Suite normally sleeps 2 adults in the bed, however, another adult or youngster can comfortably sleep in the hammock at any time of the year.
Pac 'N Plays are available for small children. Plus there is a a public playground across the street. There is a small plunge pool in which to cool off after a day at the ruins; public spaces and verandas with inviting seating or relaxing hammocks. A bookcase filled with Mayan reference works and guides to the Yucatan is available for our guests. Plus there's an authentic thatched-roof Mayan palapa where you can indulge yourself with a massage, facial, manicure or pedicure. And there is secure, off-street parking. We have 7 other rooms available. Please contact us for details.
Our breakfasts are flavorfully fresh, healthy and filling. There is always a tropical fruit selection, granola & yoghurt, rolls or muffins, freshly squeezed juice, coffee, tea and milk plus the breakfast entree of the day... maybe huevos rancheros or tamales filled with shredded chicken or perhaps a surprise. There's cereal for the kids. And we can work with just about any dietary restriction to provide you with a great breakfast. You won't leave the table hungry. A wrap-around, flag-draped balcony overlooks the dining courtyard while the space above rises to a three-story, light-filled atrium. The national flags are from the home-countries of past guests.
Casa Hamaca Guesthouse may have the only wheelchair accessible guest room in all of Valladolid. There is a gently-curving ramp from the parking area to the first floor of Casa Hamaca where the spacious Tun Nich Na (or the Stone Suite) awaits you. It's not quite ADA compliant but it is very close.
There are no guest phones nor in-room TV. There is, however, a DVD player in the salon for your use.

Denis, thanks for everything. We are a little sad that we only had 3 days here. This is a really neat place. We loved our visit here. Everyone was so helpful and kind. We so much enjoyed going to Xocen and Chichimila to visit the homes of those beautiful Mayan people. And the festival in Xocen was an amazing experience. Thank you for making this a fabulous three days. Robert, Cameo and family; Mahomet, ILDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

From the moment we pulled into the parking area we knew we were in for a special stay. Denis welcomed us as special guests to his beautiful home. Though we have stayed at 5 star resorts in Mexico, we have never have been so comfortable as we have been in this well appointed and large home. The shower had hot water & pressure! The rooms are beautifully decorated & reflect the owners appreciation & sensitivity to Mayan culture. The staff out-performed the staff of the finest resorts; our breakfasts we abundant & delicious. Our room was cleaned & straightened to perfection. Everyone here seemed genuinely pleased to be working here. We came seeking adventure and experiences we would not find in a Mexican resort. Our expectations were not only met but greatly exceeded. We visited a sugarcane pressing family in the jungle who were using a horse to power a press. We viewed the whole process from cane to molasses to candied fruit. Amazing! We toured Mayan villages as if we had stepped back in time hundreds of years. We even had the honor of visiting a local shaman for a blessing and healing. Denis took us to restaurants we would have never ventured in on our own. It was all we had hoped for & much, much more. Thank you Denis. Gretchen & Greg; Osceola, WIDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

About the owner: Welcome to my home. Mi casa es tu casa. Your host is Denis Larsen. He has been traveling to the Yucatan for over 13 years...always fascinated with Valladolid and its environs. He purchased and restored a beautiful casa in the historic district he wishes to share with you. He likes to talk and to listen. He likes to meet new people and spend time chatting with them and getting to know them. Denis was born in the USA in the state of N. Dakota and raised in Montana. He has since lived in Illinois, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Madrid (Spain), Lausanne (Switzerland) and Isla Mujeres (México). He was educated at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), the School of Visual Arts (NYC), the Parsons School of Design/New School (NYC) and Healing Hands Institute for Massage Therapy (Westwood, NJ). Denis has a background of Industrial Design and New Consumer Product Development. He has lectured at Parsons School of Design (NY), Ramapo University (NJ) and the Halifax College of Art and Design (NS) and taught Elderhostel courses on Japanese woodblocks prints for a number of years. He volunteered with the Mayan Research Program in both Belize and in the Yucatán on archaeological and anthropological projects. Denis is a nationally certified (USA) and licensed (CT) massage therapist and bodyworker and is Director of the aNeed2Heal Bodywork Centers. Denis has provided massage services in the USA, Mexico, Greece (at the 2004 Paralympics), Ecuador and Peru. Denis is attempting to learn some Yucatec Mayan. The few words Denis already knows always bring at least a smile if not an outright laugh, when he uses them in a Mayan village. In addition to Casa Hamaca, Denis volunteers in the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo in Mexico, he helps with roof construction, food distribution, reading glass distribution, medical missions and substance-abuse rehabilitation.
Why the Owner Chose Valladolid:
I love the interaction of a fusion of the Mayan culture and the Spanish colonial culture. Valladolid is about 450 years old as a colonial city and perhaps as much as 2,000 years as a Mayan community. Many people, even in the city, still dress traditionally and speak Mayan as their mother-tongue. The area has a rich history dating back many hundreds of years and includes close proximity to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Cobá and Ek Balam. The area is surrounded by living Mayan villages where the people still live and work much as their ancestors did a thousand years ago. The area is filled with caves and caverns as well as freshwater-filled cenotes (natural "sink-holes") where you can explore, swim, snorkel, cave dive or kayak. Because of its central location on the Yucatan peninsula, Valladolid is close to the beaches and saltwater fishing of both the Gulf of Mexico and of the Caribbean. It is also exactly midway between the cities of Cancun and Merida; both of which have international airports and all the amenities of a big city. In 15 minutes I can be exploring in the jungle and in less than 2 hours I can be enjoying a concert in Merida.
The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
A visitor to Casa Hamaca has the opportunity to experience the Mayan world up close and personal if he chooses. Start with a nap in an authentic Mayan hammock; every room has a hammock for napping (siesta), relaxing or sleeping. All of our staff is Mayan and their mother-tongue is Yucatec Mayan. They speak Mayan at home and among themselves and are happy to teach visitors a few words. All of our breakfasts main-dishes are Mexican, Yucatecan or Mayan; they vary according to time of year and the availability of fresh ingredients. Cooking classes are available to learn both Yucatec and Mayan dishes with advanced notice. Volunteer opportunities such as teaching English (extended stays only), food distribution to the elderly and infirm in small Mayan villages, distribution of books and other educational materials to local schools are wonderful ways to turn a good vacation into a great one that you, your family and friends will always remember.
