In and around the house: Casa Union is a new, light and clean house surrounded by a big garden of +600 square meters / 6500 square feet. It is situated in the nicest part of Oaxaca, San Felipe del Agua. Both, the house and our garden look out over the valley and mountains.
The two levels of the Casa Union have a total surface of 200 square meters / 2000+ square feet. The house is light and spacey with a wide living with a dining section, a fully equipped kitchen, 4 comfortable and light double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an extra toilet.
In the beautiful garden mango, banana, orange, lemon and avocado trees are growing next to the cactus area, the flambojan and many other beautiful local plants. Your central place will probably be garage’s roof terrace offering space, sun and/or shadow and a beautiful view on both, the mountains and the garden.
A ping pong table provides an opportunity for some physical activity and peaceful competition.
The view of the house and garden are oriented towards the valley.
The region: The state of Oaxaca has peaks almost 10,000 feet (more than 3,000 meters) high, caverns among the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, hidden jungles, and luminous valleys that house populations where, as a crucible, cultures of all people who once lived in its midst come together.
The City
Oaxaca, the State Capital, declared Humanity’s Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO, owes its fame to the beauty and harmony of its architecture, the richness of its cultural traditions, the wide variety of its typical foods, and its soft temperate climate, spring-like throughout the year.
San Felipe de Agua
San Felipe del Agua, where Casa Union is situated, used to be an independent little village just outside of the city of Oaxaca. Nowadays, San Felipe is a beautiful quiet, residential area. Casa Union is 7 minutes walking from the village’s church, built around 1650, next to the main square.

We spent a wonderful week in this comfortable and spacious house. It has everything a family could need to really feel at home. The help we received from Blanca and Mauro was always prompt and friendly. The views are wonderful; sunrise and moonrise like I had never seen before. The terrace is a great place for breakfast and some wine at night. Coming from the city to spend the holiday, we really welcomed the country noises that woke us up in the morning: donkeys, roosters and dogs! We will sure come back.Did you find this review helpful? Casa Union is a good option in Oaxaca if you need space for a large party and have your own transportation to the center of town. On the positive side, the house is quite spacious and well-equipped and has a large yard with a view. On the negative side, the house and yard needed cleaning and maintenance when we arrived. Although these were eventually provided by the efficient staff, we would have appreciated arriving at a cleaner property. Also, certain neighbors played loud music all day long during our stay, which made it hard to enjoy the yard.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Fleeing the worst winter ever in northern New England three months at Casa Union in Oaxaca was a total delight! Weather – not a drop of rain ( or snow!); cool evenings ; warm days; deep blue skies with bright sun ( but never humid.) Neatly tucked away in San Felipe del Agua two blocks from the three times a week market by the church – great veggies, fruit, tamales and tortillas. The house is comfortable and readily accommodated visiting family and friends. The neighbors, gardener, housemaid and “administrator couldn’t have been more pleasant and helpful. No traffic noise …but the “symphony” of burros, gallos, perros gatos y cabras echoing around the valley made it special. Enjoyed breakfast on the terrace with a great view as the sun rose over the mountains…and the stars in the evening sky. Close and easily accessible by public transport to historic and fascinating downtown Oaxaca (Centro)...where we enjoyed the cultural, culinary and friendliness of the people. In sum a great place to stay in a delightful location.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our experience at Casa Unión was one of a kind. Situated in a valley, with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, against a deep blue sky, transparent air and once in a while heavy clouds gathering on the top of the hills announcing an incredible thunderstorm. What a sight! Those shades of green, then red covering the slopes like a tapestry are still in my mind. This was the view every morning from our master suite. The zooming sound of crickets and fireflies every evening put me in a mix of excitement and peace finally giving way to a sleepy mood. We were staying at this room, with a big king-size bed, private bathroom, and enough space to relax in privacy. The other two bedrooms with bathroom at the upper floor are also nice and comfortable. My children stayed in one of the bedrooms, my mom and niece in the other one. The other bedroom downstairs, also with a private bathroom was shared by my sister and brother –in-law. The nice living room and eating room are practical and spacious with a table in which the 8 of us had breakfast every morning. The kitchen is also big enough to have us all busy preparing something delicious there. But perhaps one of the most beautiful experiences was having breakfast at the front outside terrace overlooking those green hills. It makes your heart expand at all that beauty. Then just a 5 minute walk from Casa Unión you are in downtown San Felipe del Agua, with its beautiful church, cobbled stoned streets, a small yet well supplied supermarket. Then further up the hill, a beautiful hotel –hacienda Los Laureles, with neat gardens and wild vegetation. Also small bars and fusion cuisine are to be found everywhere in San Felipe del Agua. And last but not least, just a 10 minute bus ride from San Felipe brings you to downtown Oaxaca, with its lively night life and its fancy cafés, plazas and terraces. Everywhere music and cultural expressions of our ancestral Mexico. This, my friends, was an experience of a lifetime, it was deep and intense for me because it made me be proud of my roots, of this beautiful country that Mexico is. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you let us share your beautiful house.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

We rented Casa Union for a year in 2009-2010. The location in San Felipe del Agua is great. The house itself is modern and very comfortable. The yard is a real treat, and you are unlikely to find another this big in Oaxaca. We would definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children.

I was at Casa Union in December of 2008. It is such a great place. I would recommend it to anyone. The price is so reasonable for everything you get. Four bedrooms, living room, dining area, full kitchen and some of the best views in all of Oaxaca. It's located in San Felipe del Agua, a beautiful, historic village with it's own 17th century, lime green limestone church, cobblestone streets and local market. San Felipe is a suburb of Oaxaca City, a short distance from Oaxaca's stunning historic downtown area. The most memorable part for me was a party I threw there. Two bands played in the beautiful garden, the food was set up on the outdoor brick patio and the outdoor terrace provided the perfect place to view the moon rise from behind Cerro San Felipe, one of the tallest mountains in Oaxaca, which is one of the prettiest and most interesting places I have ever visited. After the formal music was over we went inside for a music jam and a bit of home-grown mezcal. It is something that will stay with me the remainder of my life. The place is clean, the area is completely safe, regardless of the misinformation you hear on the news, and the price is very reasonable for one person or couple and quite inexpensive for 2 or more couples. The management is also very friendly and helpful and can give you advice on what to do, where to visit, where to eat and the best places to find Oaxaca's world-famous arts and crafts. It's truly a great place. I look forward to returning soon.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We have stayed at Casa Union several times, with friends and family. It is comfortable, roomy and has everything needed for a relaxing holiday. The village of San Felipe offers convenient, quick access to Oaxaca city and all the surrounding villages with their arts and crafts, great food, wonderful markets. The view from the house and yard is wonderful, the patio is perfect for reading, casual meals and bird watching. And having your own kitchen means you can try all the great fruits, vegetables and Oaxaca cheese you will see in the markets. If you pick the right time of year you might find fresh fruit waiting on the trees in the yard.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

This house is in excellent condition (by local standards), is very clean, and provides comfort for 3 (maybe 4) couples or a large family. The Dutch owner, Henning, sends all the info on the house before you arrive, and his local manager, Blanca, is also friendly and helpful. Casa Union is at the urban edge and looks across a large agricultural valley. We prepared several meals -- including tortillas from a neighbor's daily production -- and enjoyed the terrace for a great evening meal. It is about a 10-minute walk up a hill to access the bus/taxi route and then another 10-minutes to the zocalo (once you get your ride -- during festivals, service is irregular). There are no near-by restaurants or groceries. We found this house to work very well for three, "mature" couples visiting for Guelaguetza and seeing as much as we could during our six day stay. As everywhere in Mexico, we found the people in Oaxaca to be warm, friendly, and generally oblivious to our presence. Highlights of the trip were the tianguis in Tlacolula, Monte Alban and our 13-hour day at the Seasons of My Heart cooking school in Etla. Finally, we would recommend Casa Union to anyone looking for a rental house as an alternative to a hotel or apartment. (Note: We don't recommend travel by second class bus from the terminal by the Abastos Market -- it's impossible to know if you will get seating on any bus until, after a long wait for departure, the bus is actually loaded. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to who finally gets seated -- but, watching the repeated loading/unloading of passengers, livestock, and goods to get the manifest finalized is both amusing and humorous if you don't have a schedule to keep.)Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
