I was looking for a unique venue to hold my mom’s 80th birthday party. I am in the hospitality industry and I could have held the party in any luxury hotel I wanted but I was looking for something genuinely unique. I stumbled upon the Castle in Litchfield by chance and decided to give it a try based on the photos and the reviews I read. It was a great choice and we had a fabulous time. It was everything I was looking for- a place for an extended family to stretch out, relax and reconnect in a warm and inviting setting. Our party was in January and when we arrived the mist rolled down the long driveway and there was silence in the car as the Castle emerged on the hill. Even I was startled by the grandeur of the setting. The public rooms were large and inviting, still decorated for Christmas it gave us the feel that it had been prepared for us and only us. My mom was thrilled as her grandchildren ran about the place exploring all the rooms. In short order we had a roaring fire in the great room, music on the stereo system and drinks in hand as we celebrated my mom’s birthday. There were 18 of us and we had plenty of room. The bedrooms were large and inviting and we had the younger children in the servant’s wing which they thought was fantastic. I could not have picked a better venue for my mom and when we headed for home she said- “you gave me everything I wanted, my family close and 2 days of laughter” I could not have found a better spot for our party and I recommend it for anyone looking for something really unique and special.

I flew in from Los Angeles to be part of an amazing weekend staying at this house. Karen welcomed me as one of her longtime friends and it could not have been more perfect. Each room is so beautiful and offers a different experience. Plenty of time spent in the kitchen cooking and eating. Sitting near the fire in the majestic living room. And just enjoying the scenery and walking the grounds. It is a must if you are in this area. I look forward to getting back there as soon as I can.

I was one of 12 to spend a "Girls Weekend" at Rye House. Upon our Friday night arrival, we were greeted by our lovely hostess, Karen, with champagne, fires blazing, and candlelight to light our way through the exquisit halls of the Old English Manor. Since we were all arriving at different times from locations far and wide, an abundance on hearty appitizers and scrumptious desserts were provided for us. We then scurried off to choose our bedrooms, each providing a different ambiance. Saturday morning, in the height of the fall foliage, what a treat to go apple picking at the nearby orchard. Devine weather, beautiful colors, friendly relaxed conversation, one might think "it doesn't get much better than this". Well, just wait, upon our arrival home, pie plates were provided with all the fixins for those of us who wanted to test our culinary talents in the professional gourmet kitchen. For the women less inclined to spend time baking, reflexology and massages were made available to us. Some of us took a leasurly walk to the lake, or just rocked on the outdoor swing feasting our eyes on the breathtaking views. Late, afternoon, just to keep the fun flowing, Karen had a group of local actors provide light entertainment for us. Bravo! To top it off, a scrumptious dinner was enjoyed in the formal diningroom, with after dinner drinks in front of the fireplace that we all gather around in the livingroom. Perfect... just doesn't describe the scene adequately. The home, which by our American standards, is really more of a castle. It is truly beyond belief. If not for the prestine condition of the home and furnishings, one might think nothing has changed since it was origionally built. Rye House is a true work of art in and of itself. Nothing is lacking and can clearing be enjoyed any time of the year, for any occasion As I made my departure Sunday afternoon, I stopped at the massive iron gates that salute the mansion at the entrance to the estate, gazing back at the castle that sits high upon the hill, I couldn't help but reflect on a long lost time and era when extravagant country homes like these were once the playground of the NY socially elite. I was grateful for the rare opportunity, for a brief moment, to experience such a time. My only regret... was that I neglected to pack my gown and tiera. Thanks for the memories.

A weekend that I will always remember. The Castle casts a magical spell. It is large yet each room is so inviting and if you go it is worth spending time in each of the living areas as each has its own personality. It is decorated so tastefully and the architecture is of such high quality you just don't see it any more. Very grand feeling. I felt like a princess in the bed I slept in, so comfy and beautiful. Karen our hostess is so kind hearted and knows how to make you feel at ease right away. She creates fun and thinks of things I would never have imagined like a 15 person acting group that came to do a murder mystery!! It was so much fun! We also went apple picking and made apple pies, canoeing in the private pond, taking long hikes on the property and dinning in the grand dinning room and a bit of lounging. Thank you Karen for a truly memorable weekend!! I highly recommend this property for weddings, a group retreat, a family get away....

Unfortunately, I am only able to give my review 5 stars... Where do I begin... I'll start with the property itself, Majestic, spectacular, amazing are just a few words that come to mind. You literally feel like you are in a castle in a far away land. The house/surrounding woods are breathtaking. The house is beautifully maintained and the appearance is 2nd to none. The property has a pool, Jacuzzi, tennis court, basketball hoop, plenty of open space...WISH I COULD GO BACK RIGHT NOW!!! Next, I'd like to talk about our host, Karen. She's the housemother, but only in the best way possible. Always making sure everyone is happy/taken cared of, and will do anything for anyone to make sure your stay is as memorable as possible. She's a beautiful person, both physically and spiritually, to the point where I'd like to take her daughter out (and I've never met anyone else in the family). We were lucky enough to spend some time with Karen, getting to know her and everything about her family, which she loves dearly. She truly is a gem. If you are looking for a memorable location with the assurance of a great time...you've found your place! If you are looking for more answers, please feel free to contact me as it would be my pleasure to shed light on any concerns regarding both the premises and the owner.

I attended a friend's party at this most beautiful estate and loved every minute of it. The house and grounds are so gorgeous and well-kept. The whole weekend was such a nice getaway from the city. The pictures give you a glimpse of the beauty and comfort of the home. And to top it off, the homeowner was so lovely and such a pleasure to meet; she gave us a tour of the grounds and made the weekend so special. This is a great location for a weekend getaway or fabulous party. I would recommend this estate to anyone who is considering it. I felt transported to another era of glamour.

Had the wonderful chance to attend a fabulous girls weekend at this beautiful estate. Everything was perfect from beginning to end and I feel so fortunate to have been able to stay in such a wonderful home. Gorgeous property to take wonderful hikes and strolls to the lake, fabulous dining room to share a fantastic meal with, lovely fireplaces to curl up in front of and a terrific kitchen! The bedrooms were nicer than the next and even though this house is a grand estate, everything was warm, inviting and cozy! What a treat to have been able to stay here for a weekend! The owners are endearing and pay attention to every detail! I would recommend it over and over again for any occasion. Thanks to the owners for allowing us the pleasure to have stayed in their lovely home.

My wife and I rented this incredibly impressive home to celebrate my 30th birthday weekend. As others have indicated, the pictures are one thing but actually staying here makes you never want to leave. From the moment you pass through the gates, you are taken back to the early 1900's with grand rooms, incredible details and expansive grounds. Karen (the incredibly awesome homeowner) gave us many ideas about activities in the Litchfield area during October, but being with such close friends and family at such an amazing property made us not want to leave. We spend the weekend playing sports out on the lawn, enjoying fine foods and wines, relaxing in the hot tub, and catching up with one another. It was just such a special weekend I'm starting to miss it just by writing this review. Because it was my birthday weekend, we had a Gatsby-themed gala on Saturday night to cap off the weekend. My friends are still talking about what a memorable night it was. I can't thank Karen enough for her hospitality and generosity! You will see us again!

We are fans of the show Downton Abbey. While this estate is more in the style of a French Chateau, we were equally transported to another era. Hard to say what is more impressive between the expansive, beautiful grounds or the charming but massive home with surprises around every corner. We had a family reunion with 15 people and there is room for all to find private time in a relaxing setting and there are grand rooms to bring us all together for meals and games. The house is well set up for fun in the summer. I would also like to see it in the winter.

We decided the best way to spend our joint 50th was to find a special place to host 14 of our best friends. We searched across New England including inns and private properties and happily found Avalon Farms Estate Castle. It was the perfect place to comfortably lounge, play and rest. We took advantage of the tennis court, hot tub and pool. We lounged and dined on the terrace, at the pool and in the dining room and large living room. We arranged wine tastings and catered meals, allowing us to relax with our guests. A few cycled in the surrounding area. The weekend passed too quickly.

We had a family union at Rye House over the Thanksgiving holiday 2011. We have had the opportunity to travel extensively and this "castle" was one of the most beautiful properties we have ever seen. The pictures are incredible but even they cannot adequately express the true beauty of this property. The owner, Karen Shaw, was wonderful to us. When we arrived, the house was decorated for the holidays with such beauty it was worthy of a magazine publication. Karen helped us hire a staff to cook and clean and they had everything prepared for our arrival. The dining room was set with formal crystal and china for the Thanksgiving feast. The antique furnishings were incredible. Every detail in this home was exquisitely appointed. The propery and grounds were magnificient. We were in awe to spend our vacation in this historical, architectural masterpiece. Oru family had the most wonderful Thanksgiving celebration we have ever had together!

The Castle in Litchfield is truly the most amazing home we have ever seen. It is everything the owners, Karen and Marc, said it would be and so much more. Our family stayed in the Castle during Labor Day weekend and several other weekends in September 2011. We have four children, ranging from 10 months to 16 years. We invited three generations of extended family to join us during Labor Day weekend. We couldn't imagine a more wonderful place. Both the Castle and the grounds are stunningly beautiful. The Castle is stately and gracious with rich wood floors and panels, leaded-glass windows and intricately-carved marble fireplaces and bannisters. It is beautifully decorated and impeccably maintained. Each room is warm, inviting and peaceful. The kitchen is wonderful - well stocked, with double SubZero refridgerators, a separate wine refridgerator, two dishwashers and a separate coffee/beverage area. We made pancakes and bacon each morning on the large gas grille and cooked dinner on the gas grille each night. In addition to the large formal dining room, there was plenty of room in the kitchen and in the adjacent dining room and screened porch for our family to gather. The grounds are as beautiful as the house, with gorgeous trees and stone walls and stone pillars. Our children (and their parents and grandparents) loved the mini-castle, tree swings and pool and loved exploring the endless trails through the woods and to the waterfall. The views both from within and outside the Castle are simply breathtaking. The grape vines overhanging the stone arbor and many of the trees were just starting to change color. It was beautiful in late summer and must be absolutely spectacular in the fall (and spring and winter). And Karen and Marc and their family are truly one of the nicest families we have met. They stocked the kitchen and home ahead of time. They met us when we first arrived and gave us a tour of the home and showed us how to work the lights and pool and things in the kitchen. They left their personal telephone numbers so we could reach them if we had any questions on how to work things. They are genuinely kind and warm and thoughtful, which clearly shows throughout the home. This was the most wonderful vacation our family has ever had and we will treasure our memories of "Castle House" (as our son calls it) for years to come.

We had a winter weekend family reunion at this magnificent property in Litchfield County. We were greeted by the property owners with a very warm welcome and were given a tour of the home and all of its amazing amenities. This 100-year-old manse is warm and inviting, and the owners made sure all of the fireplaces (there are many original ones which are beautiful) had a roaring fire upon our arrival. As picturesque as it was with all the snow still on the ground, I can only imagine how beautiful it would be in the Fall, Spring, or Summer. They have hundreds of acres with a massive swimming pool, jacuzzi, and tennis courts. My husband and I are planning a romantic getaway here in October, during prime 'leaf-peeping" season. We are so looking forward to the scenic autumn drive to one of the many great wineries that are only a few miles away. There's also a lot of fantastic restaurants and shopping nearby. We travel extensively and have to say that Avalon Farms Estate Castle is now our favorite place we have ever stayed. We highly recommend a trip to this very special place. Thank you, to the property owners, for your hospitality. We can't wait to visit again this Fall!

A visit to Avalon Farms Estate Castle was more than to be imagined. From the moment we arrived there was so much comfort and warmth all around. Spending time enjoying the property and amenities was most appreciated. The sleeping arrangements were lovely and very comfortable. We found many activities available to us in the surrounding area, along with many sites to see right in the town. But just spending time relaxing and entertaining in " The Castle" with our family members was the most fullfilling, the memories will never be forgotten. What impressed us most was the detail in which the owners took in making our stay all that we requested and more than we had expected. I would recommend this venue for family reunions and all who enjoy their own private gatherings. I can only rave and say it was well worth it.

The house was rented to us for our annual black tie New Year Eve party. Upon arrival at the house there was no one there to meet us. Within 24 hours the furnace and hot water went out... both on New Years Eve! There was no information left in the house about how to reach the owners, a property manager, a repairman or even the neighbors. Within 48 hours the driveway gates closed on their own and then broke. Upon our departure, again there was no one there to meet us. In the end we paid nearly double to use the house, then had our deposit held becasue 'the floors' were 'scratched'. There are 75 other people that can assert to the conditions endured and I urge them to post their comments.

Owner response: Unfortunately, this renter took advantage of us. This was not a black tie event it was a burlesque party. They destroyed our home. The cleaning people we have used for years, were shocked! Our wood floors had to be re sanded, the electric gate had to be fixed just to name a few. We had two people meet with the renter and reconfirm numbers where to be reached. As you can see we have always had a perfect score and never once took a deposit. This was a first. I hope no one else ever has to go through something this awful.

I choose the Castle in Litchfield as the perfect location to have our family surprise my wife on her 60th birthday. Our family is large - my wife and I, 8 grown children, two husbands, two fiances, and 5 grandchildren. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Mark (the owner) who became part of the rouse for the surprise all of us fell in love with everything about the Castle - the beautiful grounds, the fabulous rooms especially the Drawing Room with the real fireplace, the terrific bedrooms and views and the great kitchen area. The Castle was impeccably clean and despite its large size it gave us all a sense of warmth and family happiness. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there was plenty of hot water which is important in a large family who all wait until the last minute to get ready for a catered birthday dinner. For the grandchildren, there is a fabulous "mini-castle" outside which kept them all occupied for hours. And in the evening, we all gathered in the Drawing Room, lit a real fire in the fireplace, drank red or white wine and ushered in my wife's big 60. The Castle is made for making memories of all kinds - weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or just the simple pleasures of being away at a beautiful setting for a brief pause of serenity in our busy life. The owners - Mark and Karen - are very special people and great to work with on any arrangements especially if you are coming from a distance. If you "visit" the Castle, you will not be disappointed! All our family wants to know when are we going back.

The property was exactly as described... We rented the home for a long weekend away and had an amazing time. I very quick trip from New York City, this castle was in perfect working order and the owners are amazingly friendly and reasonable people. Considering the rich history of the property, the property has everything one may need for a quick getaway. Be sure to stock up on food & games on your way up and you'll have no need to leave the property. I by all means would recommend the property to others and we plan on making it an annual trip. I coordinated a trip for my international clients at this spectacular home and not only did they rave about how beautiful the property was, they were so pleased with the welcoming from the owners at the home. The owners took the utmost care of my clients; it was nice to work with friendly and caring people. They assisted in setting up private chefs and housekeeping, as well as stocking the home as needed pre-arrival. My clients were thrilled that things were organized and impressed by the location, views, and history of the property. " The house and grounds are beautiful and the weather was perfect." If you are looking for a getaway with family, friends, or just a romantic weekend, this is the perfect location! My family (including 3 young children) stayed at The Castle for a week at the end of August and loved every minute of it. The grounds, themselves, are so beautifully maintained - we spent hours a day just driving around in the golf cart exploring and enjoying them. I am still blown away by the beauty of the home itself - both inside and out. It is as every bit "castle" as the owners describe it to be and you can just feel a sense of history in the home. The furniture and decor was exquisite and elegant, with a French, vintage and stately feel to it. We went into town a couple of times for groceries and local dining, but since our focus was primarily rest and relaxation at the home front, I can't recommend to that end. But the owners had a lot of off-site suggestions for us, and they gave us a very helpful welcome tour upon arrival. The tennis court was beautiful as was the pool and hot tub and we roasted marshmallows with the kids the last night. The whole thing - a very memorable experience.

The tennis court was beautiful as was the pool and hot tub and we roasted marshmallows with the kids the last night. The whole thing - a very memorable experience.

Our family spent an amazing long weekend at this property. We spent time at the pool, played tennis, went biking, walked in the woods and bar-b-que'd each night as we relaxed on the deck which has an incredible view. We stocked up at one of the many farmer stands and a local Stop & Shop to eat in which was far more fun for us than going out - the kitchen is a foodie's dream with a farm sink and Garland stove! Each morning the kids were fighting over who was going to cook the bacon that would go with the blueberry pancakes! One afternoon was spent antiquing, window shopping and wine tasting in New Preston and Washington which are quaint, nearby hamlets. The owners were helpful showing their unique property when we arrived - and found it to be clean and well-maintained. We will return for a fall weekend.
