Private, Serene, Wooded Retreat Overlooking Lake and Mountain
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
Private and serene, this fully furnished and equipped mid-century ranch is built into the mountain, and faces due west, across the street from a private lake covered with lily pads, and a mountain beyond that. Recently renovated, this incredibly bright and sun-filled 2-bedroom, 2-bath, with additional den/children's room is a great four-season getaway, with colors and views that change with each season.
In the great room, relax on comfortable couches from which to enjoy the brick fireplace, the sky from the 2 skylights, and the view of trees and green outside the wall of windows (in the summer, you can just see the water shimmering through the dense foliage!). Dining area seats 6. Master bedroom has private bath with whirlpool jets and 2nd bathroom has slate shower. Open kitchen with skylight, breakfast bar, and morning room with picture window and rocking chairs. Windows and hardwood floors throughout, including bathrooms; kitchen area is tiled.
And a fantastic recent feature: the front foyer has been turned into a music room with the addition of an antique baby grand piano, in superb condition. Enjoy playing for yourself while looking out the picture window to the woods; or entertain your friends in the great room or with a sing-along.
Wrap-around deck with gas-grill, picnic table, and comfortable chairs with cushions from which to read, nap, or just relax.
Listen to the daytime songs of birds and let the nighttime symphony of frogs, cicadas and crickets lull you to sleep. Other than a passing car or motorcycle, it's very quiet - sometimes all you hear is the wind in the trees.
Situated in NE Dutchess County, this vacation home is close to a myriad of activities: great shopping and dining in Kent, CT, and Millbrook, NY; antiquing throughout Dutchess and Litchfield Counties; outdoor activities at Kent Falls; Macedonia and Housatonic State Parks; Mohawk Mountain Ski Area; Limerock NASCAR Speedway; Rail trail for biking; Appalachian Trail; Great country roads for motorcycling and driving; day camps; and swimming at Dover Plains and Millerton pools. Plan now for fall foliage season - dates available now for October, as well as for skiing, snowboarding, and winter activities in the area.
Or...just stay home and enjoy a sense of peace and calm.

The house is big and beautiful, located in a nice, quiet area. The kitchen is great and has everything you need to cook. The yard is lovely and very relaxing, overlooking the lake and the mountains, with a wooden table...and a hammock! We also enjoyed the BBQ and the fireplace. Squad was very nice, friendly, patient and helpful with everything. Thanks!! :-)Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My friends and I enjoyed the house and surrounding area. Well equipped kitchen with great sunlight, big wood burning fireplace in the comfy living room and great deck with views of the lake and perfect sunset. The pics are accurate of the house and the owner was a delight to work with. Also, very dog friendly!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, people with disabilities, sightseeing.

Our business requires travel to various parts of the country for extended periods and we prefer to find VRBO's that provide us the feeling of being at home. This particular home and owner were such a pleasant fit that we have already stayed here twice in the last few months with another visit schedule in the near future. The home was easily located and nicely prepared for our arrival. Some of the most enjoyable aspects we're he peacefulness of location, the views from numerous windows out into the surrounding woods and down upon the pond, the large fireplace surrounded by large leather couches along with a plentiful supply of firewood, a nice size, updated and easy to use, well appointed kitchen and very comfortable beds Being located out in the country can at times be a concern for us when it comes to groceries or trying to get around but this home is central to many of the areas of interest and I found it easy and enjoyable traveling the back roads. Last but not least the owner was very helpful, pleasant and outgoing in her efforts to ensure our stay from start to finish was very relaxing and pleasant. We are currently in the process of scheduling our next business trip to the area and are looking forward to spending time in this home away from home again. I have not stayed in this home during the fall but I can only image how beautiful the woods must look from inside the home or the large decks surrounding the house.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

This is our THIRD time visiting this property and we just love coming back each year! The owner is truly wonderful to deal with and will make sure that everything is just perfect for your arrival. The home sits atop a picturesque country property, overlooking the water and the mountains. It is spacious, comfortable, and designed with just the right balance of country charm and modern convenience. We especially love the fireplace and the new Baby Grand piano. We can't wait to return again next year!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We have visited the house twice now. Two adults and our dogs and cats, who we have always travelled with. Squad's house is very welcoming and a wonderful mix of old fashioned country with modern updates. Like for example the bathroom sinks and shower are outrageous, beautiful modern fixtures but the main living room feels like walking into the cabin from On Golden Pond. (to me anyway) Nice big tv, fast wireless internet, quiet private location for the house, huge fireplace, great deck, so many nice features to the house. Baby grand piano! It is exactly what we enjoy to get out of the city for a week or so and it has fully delivered on both of our visits. We don't have kids but there is a kids room full of stuff that I would have loved when I was a kid. The local area is quiet and remote in a way that we love. Also Kent, CT is right there and has all the basic stuff most people would want. We eat a lot of produce and there is an amazing farmers market nearby called McEnroe Organic Farm which is a nice drive and has amazing fresh produce in the right months, we have gone in the fall both times. Squad has been extremely gracious and more than fair in all her dealings, couldn't recommend the house more highly. A couple friends and I stayed here for a friend's nearby wedding. We had a relaxing stay. Comfortable beds. Nice views on the deck. Great kitchen with everything we needed. The house set up is done in a way that you never feel on top of each other. It was both spacious and cozy-feeling. Wonderful area near cute towns and pretty hiking. The owner was responsive and easy to work with.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

Nestled privately on a hilltop in a get-away-from-it-all area of the state, the house is more than comfortable and a welcome retreat from most anyone's busy life, where simplicity can reappear in a matter of a day. With inviting leather sofas, lots of seating and dining areas, picture windows and skylights, the home is bright and spacious and beckons one to relax on the spot. The nights are quiet, save for the chatter of ducks and geese and frogs, so a good night's sleep is guaranteed. I found good adventures and this seemingly quiet area offers lots to do, from art shows to high-end galleries, hiking, sales at sophisticated stores in nearby Kent, antique shops, and pretty drives to lovely New England towns that ring the area. If you like to cook, there are farmers' markets nearby, and the kitchen is well-stocked with equipment and spacious enough for several cooks to work together with ease. An outdoor grill makes dinner a snap. The best part of the house is its location high off the road. The large deck offers relaxation on comfy chairs to catch lovely summer breezes, read, snooze, have cocktails at day's end. Conversely, breakfast in the cool mornings on the deck got the day started right. If you want to stay in touch, copies of the New York Times can be found in Kent, and if you want to get away, this is a delightful spot, both remote from the hubbub yet near to active areas. The owner is a delight, helpful and eager to ensure the happiness of your stay. I hope to return in any season of the year.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

This house is so quiet and peaceful -- I love how it sits back and above the road and really enjoyed the peace and quiet afforded by the trees/leaves and the mountain/lake views from the deck. So relaxing. So perfect. And having Kent nearby, as well as great hiking in Macedonia Brook State Park and the rail trail all made the weekend hugely enjoyable! Kent is a cute little town -- a perfect place to get coffee, breakfast, groceries, etc. Macedonia Brook State Park is really close by too, and the hiking and views were phenomenal. And finally, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail was also nearby, and we were able to roller blade in a beautiful, tree-lined setting. An unbelievably relaxing weekend filled with really fun, accessible outdoor activities.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners.

This was our first VRBO and we could not be happier! Almost missed the house because of summer foliage on the trees but it was everything that had been promised in the listing. It was very clean and ready for guests, like welcoming you home. The owner was very helpful with my questions as we were the parents of the groom so were looking for restaurants or catering for our rehearsal dinner. Renting this home made our wedding weekend relaxing and enjoyable. Two of our three children were part of the wedding and stayed with us. Four adults were able to shower and prepare for this important event without issue. As the owner continues to add improvements we look forward to another visit sometime without a schedule of commitments. Beautiful area, welcoming owner. great stay!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: A residential real estate broker in New York City, I enjoy all the amenities the City offers - theater, restaurants, shopping. I usually ride my Ninja motorcycle to appointments, and spend a lot of time with my Australian Cattle Dogs. I'm very involved in dog rescue, especially Australian Cattle Dogs (AKA Blue Heelers) - helping where I can to foster, transport, and fund saving dogs especially from kill shelters and abusive situations, and to find them safe havens, and hopefully 'forever' homes. My two dogs, Argos (red), 12, and Friday (blue), 3, were from shelters. Both purebred, they came to me as fosters and decided to stay. Friday has 3 legs and was found on a dark country road in Georgia. But he has as much energy and love as Argos, and my previous blue dog, Titan.
Why the Owner Chose Amenia:
In my business, I'm always in the hustle and bustle of the City and the excitement of real estate. A few years ago, I decided I wanted a place where I could decompress and recharge my batteries, and where my dogs could have some room to play. I searched for a property within 2 hours of downtown Manhattan that had a fireplace. That was my minimum requirement! Instead, I found a phenomenal location, a short way up a mountain, overlooking Bog Hollow covered with lily pads and with a little island in the middle. One of the first times I was there, I saw a deer on the island; and another time, I heard the cry of geese and looked up to see them flying in their perfect 'V' formation. As a city girl, this exposure to wildlife was a breath of fresh air.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
What I love most on those rare occasions I'm there is to sit on the deck, especially in late afternoon and evening - although any time of day is wonderful - watching the light shimmer over the water, listening to the sounds of nature and slowing my mind down. On very cold winter nights, after a snow, the stars and moon are so incredibly bright that they light up the snow-covered yard. We have been doing some planting in front of the house, and it's exciting to see them grow. My friends and family love going to Kent, a very sweet New England town with charming shops and places to eat. Driving or motorcycling in the area, we find gorgeous roads and panoramas; sometimes we have to stop at the dairy farm as the cows cross the road. Roadside stands of fresh vegetables and August corn are on the honor system. And a little further afield are the wonderful offerings of Dutchess County and the Berkshires, with Tanglewood less than 1 1/2 hours away; skiing within 20 minutes; and all sorts of outdoor and cultural activies. But best of all, I like staying at the house, throwing a ball for the dogs, and then all of us just relaxing on the deck and taking in the view. And with the recent addition of an antique baby grand, I can now also enjoying playing the piano with the woods right outside the large picture window in the music room.
