Menehune Cottage, owner managed, is a charming and generous sized Hawaiian style garden cottage in Kuau... a residential sea-side outcropping of Paia, on Maui's well-loved North Shore. It has two generous sized bedrooms with queen beds and all cotton sheets, a bathroom with shower, (plus a warm out-door shower), living room, and a full kitchen. The interior of this cottage is fun, friendly and colorful, an inviting 'home away from home' - full of the spirit of aloha. There is a patio area with dining furniture and a gas BBQ to fully enjoy easy outdoor living in the balmy evenings. Beach chairs, good quality beach towels and a cooler are provided for your relaxing beach days.
Located in Kuau, it is within easy walking distance of the Kuau Channel for sunset relaxation or advanced windsurfer's launch to sail with the locals. Beginner and intermediate windsurfers can drive to nearby Kanaha Beach, with sand, shade and lessons!!
In just a couple of minutes you are at Ho'okipa beach for more windsurfing / kite surfing / surfing action, or relaxing on the beautiful sandy beach to watch it all happen! Just 15 minutes from Kahului Airport (OGG), and centrally located to many other Maui attractions, such as seeing the sunrise from Haleakala crater or driving the beautiful winding road to Hana.
Less than 5 minutes drive brings you into Paia town... the home of Mana Foods for fresh organic one-stop shopping, and a splendid mix of restaurants, coffee-shops, trendy boutiques, bank, and post office. Crazy about cycling? Rent a bike from Go Cycling Maui in Paia, or take their tour. They call it '...sort of a fantasy camp for cyclists'.
All the best Northshore beaches surround Paia, including Baldwin Beach, perfect for early morning walks or a swim.

We stayed at the cottage for three weeks and were satisfied with the house, location and the nearby town Paia. It is a quiet and child friendly and you don't have to worry about cars and traffic. The cottage had everything a family with kids need, from kitchen equipment to beach toys and gear. The photos on the web give an accurate account of what it looks like - no surprises there. Only a little walk away are good surfing beaches, but it was too windy at the time for us to swim and play on the beach with the kids,so we only went there for morning or afternoon walks. Paia is a great little laidback town with a good mix of locals and tourists without being touristy. We highly recommend The Flatbread Company for delicious pizzas and casual dining. We also went to Mama's Fish house one night and had a lovely and expensive meal. Paia is also a great starting point for trips around the island. We drove quite a lot to various beaches on the south shore. The hosts were really friendly and helpful giving good tips for excursions and beaches.Did you find this review helpful? Nous avons loué ce cottage en août 2012 pour une famille de 4 personnes. Il est très confortable, très bien equipé et bien situé, notamment pour les planchistes. About the owner: I grew up in New Zealand, I lived in Vail Colorado for over 20 years teaching skiing and developing a unique program Dynamic Skiing for Life. My husband and I started coming to Maui to windsurf, surf and scuba dive in the 80s as a perfect way to continue our love of the outdoors but this time we were playing in the ocean instead of on the mountains. We fell in love with Maui and the north shore and we bought our property in the early 90s. With a lot of love and family help we created the Menehune Cottage for vacation rental from the original Hawaiian home on this property. We love the location which is close to everything we love to do and we have enjoyed sharing this with our guests. Maui is a special place with its mountains, ocean, rainbows, soft air, music and the people. We have made this our home and now instead we visit the mountains for a little skiing, but we always return home.
Why the Owner Chose Kuau:
3 mins walk to the beach, we can rig on the lawn and windsurf at the Kuau channel, close to everything we love and need - Paia is less than 5 mins away, also Baldwin beach for early morning runs and a couple of minutes from Hookipa beach - it is convenient and delightful

The cottage is a little piece of old Hawaii in a garden setting but close to the ocean and walking distance from world famous Mama's Fish House restaurant also walking distance to the Kuau Mart for local flavor and 'talk story.'
