Puako is a tranquil residential neighborhood with an array of activities both close by and within easy driving distance. The area abounds with excellent opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, diving, and beachcombing. Just feet from the front door are ocean activities that should satisfy all swimming and interest levels, from shallow, sandy tide pools to the depths of the reef, a designated marine conservation area. Sun bathe on the small beach in front of the house or, minutes away, are world class white sand beaches. Hike the valleys in north Kohala, go horseback riding in Waimea ranch country, shop in Kona, or visit the many historical sites along the coastline. An assortment of dining possibilities are within easy access.
The Kiawe House is a wonderful and affordable Puako oceanfront cottage well designed for open family living. Both the layout of the house and décor are simple and comfortable. Wide sliding doors face a large lawn and the ocean, inviting sea breezes as well as spectacular views of seasonal whale migration, basking sea turtles, occasional ocean storms, and memorable sunsets. You will feel as though you’ve been living in the islands all your life.

We had an excellent time staying at this Puako beachfront cottage. The house is one of the few remaining of the original 1950's Puako cottages, and has been very well maintained. Two nice bedrooms, nice full bathroom, fully functional kitchen and a large dining/living room with fantastic views. The lot is great with several seating areas on the lawn to enjoy the view, and a stairway to the beach. There are tidepools to explore and turtles to watch basking in the sun. The house also has an outdoor shower and a nice washer and dryer and is equipped with beach chairs, masks/snorkels and other beach gear. The snorkeling is great at Puako. Good entry points are at the end of the road and at the access point by the Catholic Church. The about 2 mile long Puako Road is a wonderful place for a morning walk or run. Some of the best beaches in Hawaii, 69 beach, Hapuna and, our favorite, the beach at the Mauna Kea Hotel are nearby. Puako is a wonderful place to stay and this is our favorite cottage. We can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, romantic getaway, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with young children.

This is a fabulous home! It is located on the Puako reef, so snorkeling is just a short swim from the steps over the seawall. Snorkeling inside the reef is also possible. At low tide there are pools to teach babies how to swim. Turtles bask at the foot of the seawall. The house is a little dated, but spotless. It is designed for easy beach living: (tile instead of carpet), outside door to the bath, outside shower, and clotheslines to dry gear and laundry. The high ceilings and open doors make the house seem bigger than it really is. All the appliances we used worked well and many had been updated. The neighborhood is friendly and active, with many people walking or running the Puako Road at all times of the day. The owners have thoughtfully added little touches for their visitors: a history of Puako, a guide to the fabulous plants in the well-tended garden, guides to the local shops, and a good book collection. Sometimes one wonders if a home is as represented in the description. This one is understated if anything. Altogether, we enjoyed the house immensely and would love to make it our Hawaiian Home Away.Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children.

This cottage is simple and functional. We have stayed here three times and have been very happy each time. Perfect for a couple or a family with a couple of children. Kitchen has everything you need to cook. Going to sleep with the sound of the ocean and breezes and waking up to the sounds of the birds can't be beat. The owners are wonderful to work with. This is a gem!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children.
