Private Homes, Historic District cottage description

Our Amelia Island home was constructed more than 100 years ago. Modernization has not diminished the charm. It sits on a corner lot with large trees, fenced yard, hot water outdoor shower, front 'visiting porch' with rockers and a secluded lanai out back offering privacy for introspective calm or an opportunity to turn on the party lights and giggle.

Inside is cozy and comfortable. What you will get: 12 foot ceilings, huge soaking bathtub, vintage decor with long loved antique furniture, shelves of books, games and puzzles, a perfect story time or daydreaming nook, completely furnished kitchen with shrimp pot and plenty of chef's accessories, split bedrooms which offer privacy, quiet and efficient ceiling fans in each room, some flooring is the original beautiful heart pine and the living room offers a small wood burning fireplace for the cooler months.

Carriage horses pass the cottage daily on their way to and from work. Each horse has his own distinctive personality and will slow down by the house in hopes he will be offered a carrot or an apple. Big Boomer's favorite is peppermints (he asked me to tell you). Try to remember to listen for them (clomp- clomp) and have a snack handy to take outside.

                  • Our cottage is on the Carriage Horse Route and the owner gives discounts to all our guests. (Peppermints stocked on porch for treating these gentle giants as they clomp by; Boomer even has to be nagged by his driver to 'move on!' past us as he dawdles hopefully) Biking or walking the lovely 4 blocks to town from the cottage is a treat in and of itself. Sunset from the marina. Today's catch from the marina seafood store. Primo dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner all within the downtown area. Our neighborhood is long established and very welcoming. An afternoon beneath the fans on our front porch will bring you opportunities to chat with others. If privacy is desired, the big rattan chair and a book on the back lanai will be your pick. One neighbor is a sailing instructor and offers the BEST boat tours to various spots. All info is in a notebook at the cottage. Take a look inside our Memory Book and discover what others have found to love about living on an island...moreless

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I fell in love with Amelia Island's 'old Florida' feel and ambiance many years ago. This is such an easy trip from my home in Asheville, NC. I put in an audio book, set my cruise control and try to remember to put my blinker on at the first exit in Florida. Then....ahhhhh......There really is nothing like this little island! Our friends and family have all enjoyed visiting over the years. Many have left their own works of creativity and art as gifts for the cottage. The large painting in the front bedroom is from John; the stained glass window in the back hallway was made by Lisa; special framed drawings by Oman and by Lee and by Summer and various seashell and sharks teeth collections are scattered about. It is....magical. You just have to Go to Know.

Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Historic District:
I inherited this sweet cottage from a dear friend who lived on and loved Amelia Island for many years. She was a passionate and strong advocate for much of the Greenway Development as well as a champion for wildlife and native species habitat protection. Her name is Susan Laird. There is a billboard constructed in her honor near the coastal access to Eagan's Creek Greenway. She taught me much about how to Love an Island.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I usually come to Unwind Myself, so the beach, front porch and back lanai are my settings of choice the first few days I am here. My wonderful neighbors must be greeted and all news shared since I've last seen them. The Saturday morning Farmer's Market is a Must...as are daily visits to the absolute BEST Dog Park ever. An excellent Community Theatre is just around the corner next to the island Museum of History. I'll be biking around my lovely old neighborhood and the few blocks into downtown so I can sit awhile outside the coffee shop and chat up whoever else is 'loafering' on this historic street. Side streets are filled with art galleries, locally owned restaurants, book shops, bakeries and antique dealers. Miles of beaches line the island...some are provided with public services like restrooms and restaurants while other sandy stretches are quite isolated and wild. Vehicle travel is allowed on some. Main Beach is just across the island from our cottage, about one and a half miles (with a bike lane available). My favorite bit of shoreline is the northern end bordering Fort Clinch (pssst...that is where the most shark's teeth are to be found.) The island has an active wildlife preservation group and there are many activities sponsored both on the island as well as at nearby state parks. Sea turtles nest here. Right whales also use the waters off the island for calving. Both can be seen during certain times of the year. Sunsets at the marina are a stroll or bike ride away. We have peeked in on fancy sailing ships from all around the world at the Fernandina City Marina. I do love meandering around the old cemeteries, visiting the Spanish town square at the 'first Fernandina' site on the north end of the island, getting heavenly massages from Carol at Island Massages, pedicure and foot scrub treatment from Trang, visiting T Rays' on Fridays for the shrimp basket special and...and... How many words can I use?
