"Walden Woods" is a totally renovated 'Old Highlands House' and is located in Big Bear Pen, one of the oldest established neighborhoods in the town of Highlands. Cable and Wifi.
The new private master suite features a native stone fireplace and private bath. It opens onto a covered porch with a metal roof that lets the falling rain take your nap to another level. Cool summer evenings call for a fire in the open firebox of the woodstove in the great room. Morning coffee on the vaulted front porch brings visits from hummingbirds, juncos and chickadees. Upper lake is a stones throw away or take the Blue Hole canoe to one of many area lakes for fishing, swimming or picnicking. Many waterfalls and day hikes just minutes away.

Great room with TV/entertainment center opens to kitchen and dining room. Well appointed kitchen features gas range, microwave and dishwasher. Washer and dryer are out of sight in the pantry. Covered back porch has outdoor eating area and charcoal grill. Vaulted front porch is surrounded by lush landscaping. Master bedroom with queen is on opposite side of the house from the other 2 bedrooms. Second bedroom has queen and shares a full bath with third bedroom with full sized bed. High quality linens and Serta hotel grade bedding in all bedrooms. Full size sleeper sofa in great room.

Why the Owner Chose HighlandsOur family fell in love with the Highlands/Cahsiers plateau when we started bringing our daughters to Camp Merrie Woode about 20 years ago. We rented numerous houses and stayed in various inns and resorts until we took the plunge and bought the house you see here. It was in need of much love and as a builder/designer I spent the winter/spring of 2003 in highlands rebuilding this house. We have taken on another building project and have decided to rent this house to friends and folks like you. We are in Highlands for most of the season and would be happy to show you around the area or recommend a great hike, a refreshing swimming hole or one of the many great restaurants in the area.
The Unique Benefits at this HouseWe have spent countless days and weeks at Walden Woods and being able to walk to town or take the canoe on one of the many lakes is special to us.

My wife and i have 3 children who have all grown up enjoying the cool summers on the highlands/cashiers plateau. My wife enjoys horseback riding and hiking in the Smokys. I am a residential builder and designer and also enjoy hiking and boating. When not in Highlands we are at home in Knoxville Tn.

This was my first time using VRBO, and found the experience to be terrific. This house was perfect for my wife, daughter and I (with room to spare). It's located on the mountain, but maintains a "neighborhood" feel. The recent remodling looks good (especially in the master bedroom). Our favorite part of the house was the front porch, where we were able to sit and watch hummingbirds (and other varieties of birds) come to the feeders over our morning coffee. The owner was also very receptive and readily available to answer any questions about the house.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, families with teenagers.

Walden Woods was the perfect girls weekend getaway location for our group last weekend. The kitchen has a great traffic flow for cooking and enjoying each other's company. You can sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet surroundings and gentle mountain breeze. The Carey's are so easy to work with and the house was exactly the way it looked in the pictures....Very clean and homey. So homey in fact, that we felt as if it was one of our own. Our group will definitely be renting Walden Woods again as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

We really enjoyed our weekend in Walden Woods. The house is charming and comfortable, the property is beautiful, and we enjoyed fishing from the canoe even though we didn't catch any. Look forward to our next visit/escape!
