Welcome to Casa Kaana where you will experience the charm and relaxation of the Yucatan fishing village of Chelem with all the comforts of home. Just 75 steps from the beach and a short walk or bike ride to the village Centro. Take a dip in the pool and lounge on the pool terraza or house balcony with an afternoon beverage. Enjoy pescado frito (fried fish), ceviches, and Mayan food specialties at a variety of local restaurants, or cook up a great meal in the full kitchen using ingredients from the local market, panaderia and tortilleria.

The house features a second floor Master suite with Queen bed and full bath, air conditioning and direct access to wraparound balcony. The downstairs has a Queen bedroom, a bedroom with two Twin beds, living area, dining area, kitchen, and a full bathroom. All rooms in the home have ceiling fans. There is also a separate second floor entrance to the wraparound balcony. The pool and terraza deck are accessed from the kitchen and Twin bedroom.

The Gulf coast village of Chelem (6,000 people) swells to about 15,000 in the months of July and August and during the Easter and Christmas seasons. These vacation seasons bring local carnivals, performances and additional vendors. For the rest of the year, the village is quiet with residents earning their living fishing the seas of the Gulf and operating village shops, cocinas economicas, and restaurants.

You can spend your days with relaxing beach walks or drive to other nearby villages such as Chicxulub or Telchac Puerto. If you feel more active, you can spend time in the port city of Progeso, a city of 50,000 residents less than a 10-minute drive away or exploring the museums, art and culture of Merida, the Yucatan capital of nearly 800,000 residents. If you are interested in the Mayan culture, there are many ruin sites nearby including Xcambo, Dzibilchaltun, Uxmal and the Puuc Route, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam.

We offer short- and long-term rentals so if you are interested in escaping the cold seasonal weather, consider Wintering at Casa Kaana in the village of Chelem.

My husband and I stayed here for a week in January and loved every moment. The house is open, clean and welcoming with its Yucatan styled decor and modern must-haves like Wifi, a cell phone that can be used locally and a washing machine. The pool was great for lazy days when we wanted to lounge with a drink in hand and the Gulf is a one-minute walk out the front door. The house is located in a small town called Chelem, which offers multiple yummy restaurants despite its size. Progresso is a larger town less than 10 miles away that offers a large, open-air market, a boardwalk, kayaking and good eating, too. We biked to Progresso twice on bikes provided at the house. The house is also a good jumping off point to other sites of interest on the Yucatan. We were able to visit the ruins at Mayapan (where you can actually climb on all the ruins!) and at Izmal, both great trips. We also spent a day and one evening in Merida, only a half-hour drive away and which offers more night-time activity. I would recommend the house and the area for couples and families.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

We just got back from our first stay at Casa Kaana, and it will certainly not be our last. The house is everything you could hope for - sparkling clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated with all the amenities, without being pretentious or sacrificing the local ambiance. The beautiful, warm Gulf waters are a few steps away, with gorgeous views of the sunset and great swimming. While we were there we visited Progreso and Merida for great shopping and eating, rented mopeds in Progreso to do some exploring of nearby towns (Chicxulub is beautiful), got an amazing tour of the local waters and secret islands by one of the locals (Rodolfo at Ecotourismo Ria de Chelem), visited nearby ruins (Dzibulchaltun) and cooled off in one of the must-see Cenotes, lounged by Casa Kaana's gorgeous pool, rode bikes around the neighborhood and enjoyed the fresh local food and friendly local people (we felt completely safe the entire trip). It is possible to have a luxury beach/ resort experience or to explore the culture and countless activities/ adventures within reach - it is truly the best of both worlds, and at a price that simply can't be matched. Tip: carry an English-Spanish dictionary or phone with translator app if you don't have at least minimal language skills- this is not Cancun! :)

My husband and I stayed at Casa Kaana for a week in January 2012. The weather was perfect - blue skies and temps in the 80's. The place was wonderful - bright airy, colorful and very comfortable. The bedrooms are large and nicely appointed. The kitchen is large and has everything one needs to cook whatever meals you want. We toured the area and saw 3 Mayan ruins. All were within 1-1.5 hours drive on nice roads. We encountered very nice people everywhere we went. And the food was really good - ceviches and lots of fresh fish. Most wonderful was how inexpensive everything was!!!

We spent the month of March in Chelem and stayed at Casa Kaana. The first week was brutal due to an electrical power outage that took the power company a full week to get repaired. Once things got back to normal, we found the property to be comfortable and really enjoyed the pool in the afternoon when we were not traveling about. The house is within a couple of hours drive to some of the major Mayan ruin sites and we were able to take several day trips to these sites and some of the local villages.. Shopping was close by in Progreso and locally in Chelem. The new development along the beach in Progreso was fun to visit. We found the people in the Yucatan to be very friendly, helpful and polite. We wished we had a better grasp of Spanish, which would have really enhanced our experience. The caretaker for Casa Kaana was very helpful when we had any concerns or questions. On the plus side, the TV/DVD player worked just fine, having a cell phone in Mexico to use and keep with you added a sense of security, the internet worked well and the pool was great, particularly the last week we were there, it got HOT!! The AC in the bedroom was also a big plus during the last week when we lost the sea breeze at night. We found the house to be functional and enjoyed our stay. Don't expect a 5 star resort enviroment, this is living in a small Mexican fishing village. One final note, we felt very secure at all times while in Chelem and traveling the Yucatan due to the significant police presence. We passed a number of check points and were never stopped. Overall - it was a good experience.

Fantastic Home, we just loved it! The location in Chelem is perfect for a quiet getaway in "the real Mexico" The house is just like home away from home, lots of amenities, including bicycles, books, PC, cell phone etc. The yard and pool were great and we felt very secure. The caretaker (Joan) was prompt and always available to deal with anything we requested. There was nothing we required that wasn't there. This home would be suitable for anyone, families, and romantic couples, or seniors. We loved the village of Chelem also, very comfortable and friendly, we toured each morning on the bikes and enjoyed our outings. The restaurant "Costa Azul" is one of the best we frequented during our 3 weeks in the Yucatan, including Progresso or Merida. Just an amazing wounderful time! The beach just past Chuburnya is fantastic also if you want to escape and relax alone. Wonderful Vacation Location!

About the owner: My husband and I love to travel. We always enjoy renting apartments and homes in the areas we visit to really feel like we are 'living there' even for a short period of time. Our first visits to Mexico were to the Mayan Riviera but it felt too built up. Exploring other Mayan ruin sites led us to Merida, the Gulf Coast and ultimately Chelem. We love the village vibe plus the proximity of Progreso and Merida when we want to do something more.

                          Why the Owner Chose Chelem:
Like many busy people, we enjoy (and need!) a veg beach vacation sometimes. But we also like the option of other things to do. Chelem is a great base for exploring the Yucatan peninsula and with a great cultural city like Merida so close by, we feel like we get the benefits of city life with the added bonus of a breezy, sunny, relaxing place at Casa Kaana. Kaana is a Mayan word that translates as sky or heavens. And when we are up on the wraparound terrace the sky seems to go on forever.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We also love to eat and it's pretty cool to be able to walk or bike over to Chelem Centro to pick up breakfast pastries from one of the local panaderias, enjoy the freshest fish you can imagine at restaurants or cocinas economicas (you'll literally watch the fisherman bring in their catch) or experiment with cooking our own Mexican meals with ingredients from the mercado. We've also explored some of the Mayan ruin sites, caves and cenotes in the area and there are lots more to see. And of course it's great to return to the pool and relax among the coconut trees.
