Marrakech bed and breakfast description
We spent more than two years renovating this traditional courtyard home (Riad means garden in arabic). An army of local craftsmen contributed their skills and watching them work there can be no doubt it was a labor of love. The finished property has a fantastic dipping pool on the ground floor and a stunning roof terrace as well as all modern amenities- air conditioning is essential in Marrakech.
You will love the attention to detail. Solar water heating, wood fireplace, flat screen tv's with satellite channels, essential oils burning in the patio, scented plants on the roof terrace, complimentary toiletries, fluffy towels and fine cotton bed lined.
Papillon means butterfly in French and the Hibiscus room is named after a local flower. You will enter this room through an arched doorway in ancient walls more than three feet thick. Once inside with the shutters closed you will be in your own private Moroccan retreat.
We have four other en suite rooms available any of which can be made up as doubles or twins. Renting the whole property is an outstanding option. Contact us for details.

Riad Papillon - Marrakech
We decided to do a Riad instead of plush hotel - immerse ourselves more into the Moroccan culture (and save a few quid!). So pleased we did! Everything from initial online booking in the UK to the return taxi to the airport, all were planned perfectly by a lovely bunch of people. Our first time in Morocco was made totally hassle free, we got personal travel tips before we left, smooth pick up from airport and a lovely meal for our first night at the Riad - which was one of the best we had during our stay! Nothing was too much trouble for Yassine at the Riad, no stress on timings for breakfast or even worrying about locking your room! We were also given a free mobile phone to call for "help" if we got lost in the Souks! Great place :o)

A magical place
My sister, 12 year old son and I stayed at Riad Papillon over the Easter holiday and would return to Marrakech and Riad Papillon at a drop of a hat! From the minute we were met at the airport the Moroccan hospitality was amazing. Our driver was chatty and informative, he was happy to answer all of our questions. On arrival in the Medina we were met and escorted by Mostafa to the riad, our Marrakech home! We ate like kings in the riad on the first night.. delicious food prepared just for us, and the breakfast next morning served in the seating area on the first floor was delicious. Nothing was too much to ask our hosts, we were even issued with a mobile phone to call for help if we were lost and and given a map and lots of tourist advice before venturing out. The riad was spotlessly clean and very homely. Thank you for your wonderful warm hospitality to everyone involved, the whole experience from making our reservation online to going home after a fabulous holiday, was utterly wonderful!

Perfect Oasis, wonderful staff
Just returned from an 8-night holiday in Morocco, which included a 4-night stay at Riad Papillon. Our group of 11 (4 adults and 7 children ages 5-13) rented out the entire riad. It was perfect. It was exactly what we hoped it would be! The location is perfect, right in the heart of the action inside the medina, easy walking to everything. While splendidly located in the heart of this crazy city, you step inside and it's an oasis of tranquility and cleanliness! The place is gorgeous, beautifully finished and decorated. It even smelled wonderful throughout with scented oil burning, it's all in the details. The small pool in the centre of the riad is perfect for cooling off. It's not large by any means, more of a large hot tub, but certainly big enough for 7 kids to enjoy at once! There are five rooms, three on the ground floor (one twin, one double and one triple) and two on the first floor (one twin and one double). All have wonderful ensuite shower rooms, with delicious bath products that are refilled daily. The terrace on the roof is wonderful, lounge chairs, tables, etc. We spent a couple nights up there talking and enjoying warm Marrakech evenings. It was hot (45 degrees) when we were there, but the rooms all have air-conditioning.

“Great location, staff and service”
Trying to book a fairly last minute trip to Marrakech with hardly any spare time was always going to be a challenge but, after a bit of intensive (10 minutes) online research, we came across Riad Papillon and took a chance on it. It proved well worth it. From the word go, the staff went out of their way to make our short weekend break as good as possible - from organising late night airport transfers and food on arrival to giving us some great restaurant recommendations. The Riad itself is in a great location - ten minutes walk from the Djemma el Fna and close to the Dar al Basha which is good for taxis to anywhere outside of the Medina. Our room was lovely and meant a mere 30 second walk from bed to poolside. Overall, a really good find and great value for money.

Exceptional visitGuest comment entered by owner
"I experienced an exceptional stay at the Riad Papillon in late February 2012 for the Marrakech Biennale. The Biennale program was fascinating and well worth the trip (especially the lectures around town and the exhibit at the royal theater); Riad Papillon's staff were most helpful, patient and kind and the lodgings were attractive, comfortable, thoughtfully appointed and well located. One of the highlights was also the photography museum and it was nice to feel comfortable, safe and welcome walking throughout the city. The cooking class the staff recommended was just lovely and, in fact, when I returned, my significant other and I immediately made the preserved lemons that we only recently opened because they take about 8 weeks to cure. As mentioned by other guests, Riad Papillon's provision of a cell phone came in handy once or twice in the process of getting oriented to the delightful maze of the Medina and the taxi pick up and return to the airport were essential. In fact, the driver taught me a bit of Moroccan early on which came in handy on numerous occasions, which was very kind of him. Occasionally, the staff would make a most welcome and soothing little pot of mint tea, which is another particularly nice memory and a few minutes of lounging in the light breeze on the roof deck also provided a lovely, relaxing retreat. Thank you once again to the staff for providing a truly first class experience from the first e-mail about booking to the return to the airport and everything inbetween. I am now looking into ways to volunteer, make small donations, or somehow give back and would appreciate suggestions. Kind regards"

About the owner: Mike and Lucie Wood are both British with a shared love of travel and hospitality. We really understand the requirements of the US visitor having both earned our Masters degrees in the USA (Mike at the University of Pennsylvania and Lucie at University of Nevada Reno). A stay at Riad Papillon will give you a window into the local culture, cuisine and traditions of one of the most hospitable countries in the Arab world.
Why the Owner Chose Marrakech:
My wife and I have lived in the UK, France, Nevada and Pennsylvania. We have travelled on five continents and Marrakech is the only place we have ever visited that we could see ourselves coming back to indefinitely. The main Jemma al Fna square in Marrakech is one of the most vibrant places in the world, a visit their is almost like stepping into the pages of the bible. The old town also features ancient monuments some more than a thousand years old, endless shopping in the Souks and world class gastronomy. The Atlas mountains (walking, mountaineering and even skiing) as well as the quaint fishing port of Essaouira are easily accessible in a day trip.
The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
The house is fantastic but what is really special and unique is our outstanding local staff hand picked by Lucie and really motivated to understand and meet the needs of international visitors. Guest are loaned a local pay as you cell phone for the duration of their stay and our team are 911 supporting your every need as you explore the city. Our kitchen shops and cooks each meal to clients requirements, the food is truly delicious, we think the best you will eat in Morocco and given notice we can meet the most complex dietary needs.
