Our spacious mountain home offers a rare combination of intimate privacy and quietude, a long range alpine view and an easy walk to the lovely downtown of Highlands, the local supermarket or the renowned Bascom Center for the Visual Arts. You can also take an enjoyable, essentially level walk (1.5 mile loop) in the lushly wooded area in our neighborhood. Our cottage is located on desirable Holt Knob, less than a mile from the center of Highlands.
The house is equipped with wireless DSL internet, two 32 inch flat-screen televisions (DirectTV), CD player, DVD player and stereo. The house also has books, games, cards and maps, as well as hiking, fishing and other information on Highlands and nearby areas.
The great room has a cathedral ceiling, exposed beams, a skylight and a wood burning natural stone fireplace, the effect of which is enhanced by the natural leather of much of the great room furniture. The kitchen and master bedroom also have cathedral ceilings with skylights, and the kitchen and dining area continue the exposed beam décor of the Great Room. There is a powder room on the main floor. The house has a screen porch and deck facing a natural wilderness of rhododendron, laurel, and other mountain flora. The screen porch, which is located directly off the kitchen, provides an alternative dining area or simply a place to enjoy refreshments while watching the colorful sky against the western sunset – usually accompanied by a gentle mountain breeze. With an elevation of 3,800 ft., we are frequently 10-15 degrees cooler than most cities in the South.
The second and third bedrooms are on the lower level, offering additional privacy to the master bedroom. Each of the house’s three bedrooms has a separate exterior entrance onto one of its two decks. The master bedroom has a king-size bed; the second bedroom has a queen-size bed, and the third bedroom has two extra-long twin beds. The second full bath is on the lower floor adjacent the second and third bedrooms.
The exterior stairways, of which there are two, one from the driveway and parking area to the front porch and another from the front porch to the road, pass along terraced, well planted garden areas, some of which contain not only perennials, wild flowers and flowering shrubs but seasonal fruits. Each stairway is equipped with handrails and lighting for your safety and enjoyment.
Come and enjoy our mountain house. Walk to town or take a lovely, scenic walk along Holt Circle, which surrounds Holt Knob. Or just rest. This is in a wild but peaceful and enchanted land. The house offers privacy and comfort with the convenience to essentially everything you will need to enjoy your mountain getaway. It can be just for you, or you can bring your family.

What a wonderful and delightful experience! We arrived on a rainy Friday afternoon to a beautiful home and location for a few days of family togetherness. It was indeed a great experience. The layout of the house was perfect for our family. Our son and his family joined us Saturday at noon. Even though it was a rainy, dreary day outside, we could enjoy each other and our location. We enjoyed the screened porch, the view, and the games (clue, checkers, etc.). On Sunday we were able to hike to some of the waterfalls and enjoy the general area. The sun finally was shining on Monday morning, which gave us an opportunity to visit the town and shops. Our five-year old grandson loved the location of your home. We traveled from different directions (six hours for us and three for them) to meet. We are already talking about meeting in Highlands again soon and hope the weather will be better. Of course, when the time is decided, YOU will be contacted. We have already told others about your home and they should plan a visit. We will continue to sing your praises. The pictures are exactly as the house appears--down to the last detail.Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was a rainy and a bit foggy during your stay, but we are pleased that you found our home comfortable and inviting during that weather and that you found the photographs and description accurate. We are especially happy that your grandson found the house well-appointed and kept himself amused with some of the games. Highlands has interesting weather, so we try to plan for every contingency. You were wonderful guests, and we look forward to having you stay with us again, when the weather is more seasonable.

Our group got really fortunate with this vacation rental! We had a last minute mishap where our original rental fell through, but luckily the lovely couple who owns this home accommodated us with a last-minute contract (literally, our other house was cancelled two days before we were to arrive in Highlands!). However, after setting foot inside for one minute, we felt glad that the original plan fell through. The house is clean, comfortable, and very convenient to Main Street. We had a group of 5 people, with more than enough space to stretch out (and three bathrooms is always a big plus). The best part of this house may be the porch - even with the cold, damp weather, my friend and I were able to enjoy the view out with our morning coffees in hand. There's also a two-story deck with a grill that looked ideal for warm-weather cookouts. Nice sized kitchen as well. I would highly recommend this rental - both the house and its owners were an absolute pleasure! One note - there's a tricky driveway situation, but with a good driver behind the wheel it's no problem. It's quite large though - you can fit 3, maybe 4 cars.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: We work hard to meet the expectations of our guests and our own standards. We are glad you called us and that we could help you. You were a terrific group of guests. Thanks for you kind remarks.

My wife and I met our two grown children in Highlands for vacation. The rental property was just what we needed. All cooking and cleaning supplies were thoughtfully included for our use. The house was clean. The location is very convenient to town. There is almost no traffic on the road to the house which was convenient for walks after dinner. The house is just the right size for our family. Two of the bedrooms are downstairs which was nice. If one of us wanted to get away to read or whatever, he could disappear to the basement. I can honestly recommend this rental property. I hope that we will have an opportunity to do it again.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our mountain cottage. Most people like the location of the house and the very quiet paved street, which is great for walks or riding a bike. As you suggest, one of the two bedrooms on the lower level is quite large and is great for watching television or just allowing part of a family or group to get away and do their own thing. The separate entrances for both bedrooms and the deck that they access helps. Thanks for staying at our cottage.

Our 3rd straight Christmas visit to Highlands at Holt Circle . Consistency is a charm and your lovely Home is that! Fun walks around Holt Circle and up the knob, roaring fires and ample space, and the usual spotless condition of the Home keeps us returning. The welcome gift of fresh baked pound cake was a very nice touch.Owner response: We are pleased that you enjoyed staying with us again. We just returned from our first visit to Highlands, NC and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The town was fun to explore - especially on small business Saturday - and we were able to complete some of our Christmas shopping. The fresh air, hiking and fishing were also invigorating! However, I must say that I think it was Holt Knob vacation home that really made the entire trip so nice. It was everything we could have hoped for! Clean, great layout, comfortable furnishings, wonderful screened porch, kitchen with everything we needed and a fireplace that we took advantage of almost daily. Luba and John were wonderful hosts - we did not have a chance to meet them, but they were very responsive to emails during our planning stage and even left us a yummy loaf of fresh made bread as a welcome gift. It was a wonderful place to gather with family and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. We definitely hope to return again! Luba and John - Thanks so much for sharing your lovely home with us! One of our best vacations ever!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are happy that you enjoyed staying at our home on Holt Knob. It is convenient to town, and the walk is very pleasant. We try to treat our guests we would like to be treated, and we are always open to suggestions. Please stay with us again.

This house is comfortable, private and well-maintained and has many extra small touches that make it feel like home. The spacious living area and porches are perfect for relaxing in the evening, and the view is great. We were delighted with how close we were to the Bascom Art Center and downtown Highlands for shopping and dining. My husband and I are picky about where we stay on vacations, and after researching scores of houses online, we were thrilled to find this one. The owners were a pleasure to work with. We would definitely stay here again!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are gratified to hear that discerning guests enjoy our home. You and your husband were perfect guests and will always be welcome. Please stay with us again. Luba and John

Like other reviewers mentioned, the house was nicer than expected. The pics do not do it justice. The house was so well equipped that we had everything we could possibly need for our two week stay. The location of this rental was so convenient to downtown and other nearby attractions. The bed was very comfortable with luxury linens! The rooms were very spacious and the outside porch areas were also wonderful for relaxing and catching a sunset. Although the house is facing N-NE, you get a lot of the color shooting off from it. One of the highlights was seeing two bears come down from the mountain around 6pm-ish while we were on the screened porch! We were never in any danger and wanted to see a bear so this just made our stay even better!!! It's always hit or miss with something like this. We noticed a neighbor had left his garbage can out so we figured they were looking for food. Western NC mountains are full of wildlife so we knew there was always a possibility no matter where we were of seeing one. We could not ask for nicer owners, Luba & John!!!!! They made it so pleasurable to deal with setting up the rental and all. They were also very helpful by giving us suggestions on where to go sightseeing, dining, etc.. I would not hesitate to rent this house! Here is a list of things we did while staying here: Cities visited: Highlands, Cashiers, Glenville, Lake Jocassee, Lake Keowee, Wallhalla, Franklin, Bryson City, Cowee, Dillsboro, Sylva, Waynesville, Maggie Valley Forests or valley's Visited: Nantahala, Great Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge, Cataloochee Valley Restaurants: Wolfgangs, Mountain Fresh (Grocery & Deli), Sportspage Sandwich Shoppe (3), Pizza Place of Highlands, El Azteca, Highlands Smokehouse (2), Drug Store on Main - 460 (2), Southern Belles, Bodacious Bear (Cashiers), City Restaurant (Franklin), Blue Ridge BBQ (Waynesville), Kilwins (best Fudge around), Colonel Mustards (jam), Dusty’s. Owner response: Thank you for your kind comments. We had some few warm days of Indian Summer this October, and we are glad that you were be able sit outside on our screen porch and enjoy the fresh air and western views of the mountains. The view can be quite spectacular at sunset, especially this time of year. Thank you for sending us photographs of the bear that you saw from the screen porch. He looks very cute and innocent. You were indeed lucky to see such wonderful wildlife during your trip to our area. Please stay with us again. Luba and John

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: We have traveled a good bit looking for a place to live where nature and development are carefully balanced and where the air is cool and refreshing. We enjoy the outdoors, hiking and fishing, yet we also wanted to have a garden, to admire the ever changing flora and occasionally to dine at excellent restaurants with friendly people. All things considered, we think Highlands is unbeatable, from its natural beauty and history to its culture of art galleries, music and cuisine for every taste. This is truly an enchanted place where the clouds sometimes linger in the valleys while cascading over the hills, where most animals are protected, and where the streams, rivers and lakes are wild and beautiful, yet easily enjoyed when fishing, canoeing or simply walking. The trails offer magnificent views of waterfalls, distant ranges and the early history of this land. The town and area offer enough in the way of activity to fill every day of our lives, yet privacy, peace and rest are always available on demand. Luba and John
Why the Owner Chose Highlands:
Why did we choose the Holt Knob neighborhood? -----It is not easy to find a house in Highlands that has a quiet location within true walking distance of Main Street and that also offers an exceptional view. Our home in the Holt Knob neighborhood has this rare combination. We made our decision to buy the house within a few hours after we had seen this comfortable and well appointed home. Frequently, we leave our car parked in our garage and walk to the Main Street Inn to enjoy breakfast in the morning or a glass of wine in the afternoon. We like to spend relaxing evenings on our screen porch admiring the western sunset.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Our spacious mountain home offers a rare combination of intimate privacy and quietude, a long range alpine view and an easy walk to the lovely downtown of Highlands. The home is very comfortable and easy to find. You can take an enjoyable, essentially level walk (1.5 mile loop) in the lushly wooded area in our neighborhood. The roads in our neighborhood are paved.
