VRBO Bear stayed here: We found this property to be beary special
As featured on ABC's Sweet Retreats Annapolis Episode June 2, 2013 (http://livewellnetwork.com/Sweet-Retreats/episodes/Vacation-Rentals-in-Annapolis-Maryland/9121061) and in Annapolis Home Magazine, September 2012. Luxuriously renovated as 4-level residential loft in 2003, this 1897 Gothic Revival church retains much of its original architectural character with unparalleled location. At the corner of Maryland Avenue and Prince George Street, you are only 2 blocks from the Naval Academy (pedestrian gate #3 near the chapel), 1 block from the State House and historic St. John's College, and 3 blocks from City Dock and Main Street with its shops, pubs, restaurants, and more! Maryland Avenue has its own unique character with art, furniture, and antique shops, and restaurants. One of the most unique book stores in Maryland is two doors away.
Marvel at the soaring stained glass windows, exposed brick and bell tower. Your view is of the State House, where George Washington addressed his fellow patriots. A private elevator, in addition to the grand staircase, provides access to all 4 levels of this stunning vacation home. Living room with comfortable furnishings, 55' flat panel TV, whole house Bose sound system, CD, DVD, free Wi-Fi. Thoroughly modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, espresso machine, coffee maker and all the conveniences of home. Dining room has seating for six. Wet bar with wine refrigerator.
Enjoy your private master suite with king-sized bed on the third level. Fall asleep to the view of the lighted dome of the State House perfectly framed by the stained glass windows and awake to the sun pouring through the colored glass. If you prefer, pull the custom shades for total privacy and darkness. Your travertine marble master bath is a sanctuary with separate shower and whirlpool tub, double vanity, and luxury towels and bath supplies.
Retreat to your private BELL TOWER! Converted to a 'martini bar,' it provides a private get-away to enjoy drinks, the views, and the 40' flat panel TV. It is accessible from the master suite floor by a short spiral staircase. Guests love this secret hideout for morning coffee and evening cocktails.
The fourth floor bedroom has a queen-sized bed and en suite bathroom. This floor is a unique space designed to preserve many of the architectural details of the original 1897 church, including masterfully exposed brick, support beams, and three separate stained glass windows. The colored light from the windows reflects beautifully throughout the space at certain times of the day. The separate laundry room has a modern washer and dryer and laundry supplies for your convenience. We have a new twin-sized day bed in the sitting room and another twin pull-out chair and a half is available for the reading nook, if needed.
Residential parking passes available for on-street parking.
This Bear is gobsmacked and I am still pinching myself, not fully believing that I stayed in such a fantastic property. This converted church is literally in the middle of it all in historic downtown Annapolis. There is so much to do to right outside the door, but this vacation rental is so nice, the Bear felt completely at ease just kicking back and playing chess with one of the cubs instead of exploring the hustle-and-bustle.
Entering the front door is a treat with a grand staircase leading immediately up. At first, the Bear was a little concerned about lugging the, well, luggage up stairs. But then the Bear found the private elevator.
Entering the main floor with the living room was an astounding experience. A very well-apportioned kitchen faced huge clear-and stained-glass window with a commanding view of the Maryland State House. Preparing coffee in the morning with this view was a special treat. The Bose surround sound stereo system married to the flat panel TV made for a nice place to cool the paws and the wet bar provided everything else.
The next floor up is the main suite. The Bear still cannot believe waking up in a church on a Sunday morning, but a Bear’s life is a varied one. This suite looks out upon the same view as the kitchen, giving a great “good morning” to Annapolis. The master bath with the large whirlpool tub and separate walk-in shower provided ample soak-and-clean time. At first, I was a little concerned about the privacy of the tub, but then I found the switch that controls the electronic glass panel. Up -> clear. Down -> opaque. I could have thrown that switch all day, but if I did, I would have missed going up to the top floor.
The top floor (the 4th from the street) is where the cubs stayed. There was plenty of space with beds, day beds, and hide-a-beds. Very nice faux stucco covering the not-so-faux brick made for a visually appealing space.
One more space to talk about – the Bell Tower. The church’s conversion went all-the-way to the belfry and the bell tower is now a very nice little nook with another wetbar and minifridge. The entire Bear Family had hors d’oeuvres up there as we peeked out of the windows.
The Bear has stayed in some pretty nice places. This property in downtown Annapolis is right up at the top of them. Great property, great location, and a great time.
