Are you looking for a convenient and comfortable beach getaway? To get here it only takes us a few minutes from Williamsburg and there are no tunnels and the Colonial Parkway rarely has any road rage drivers or traffic jams like those found on the interstate or 158 to Nags Head.
Whether you like to play on the sand beach, bask in the sun, sit in a swing, lay in a hammock, go crabbing, fishing, or boating, or curl up with a good book or sack out with a good movie, Getaway has it all.
Gloucester is still a community that feels like a small town, much like Nags Head in the early 80's, with lots of local shops and local restaurants, but still has some nice franchises and chain restaurants if you are not but so adventurous.
Traditionally rented by the week, we can make special arrangements for a weekend or split week. Do you have family coming to town? Why not put them up here?

We were having trouble finding a house that could accommodate two families with very specific requirements. The Getaway gave us everything we needed, plus everything we wanted and lots we didn't even realize we wanted - all in a roomy, lovely, comfortable house! The kids loved the large yard and beach, as well as the kites, balls, lawn games, and air hockey table; we just wish we had more time to enjoy the hammock, swing, canoe, and basketball hoop! Most every room has a great view of the river, and the house is very clean and well maintained. The owner was helpful, friendly, and extremely responsive. We would love to return to The Getaway and will definitely be recommending it to our friends and family!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We just finished our second stay here. The house and location are great and could not be more kid-friendly. I love the semi-detached playroom area and the cozy sunroom. Our two-year-old son loved the bunk beds, the beach and the river traffic.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We just returned from "Get-a-way". The accommodations are very nice, especially the master suite! Everything you could possibly need has been provided, all in good working order. The view of the river from the lawn is beautiful. The house is located in a very quiet area, which is great for "getting away from it all". We dined locally at Tony & Milena's, very good Italian food. You can see Yorktown from the small beach at the house, and it's a 20 minutes drive, just over the bridge.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

This place is wonderful and I hate that I can't give it 5 stars but we had a couple of problems...the showers and tub were not clean upon our arrival so that wasn't good. The fridge did not keep food cold so we had to freeze many things and throw some away as well. Looking through the guestbook at the house, we noticed the people before us had these same issues. Other than that, the place is so big and beautiful. The beach and hammock were great to use. I hope to come back again next year if these problems can be fixed!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you very much for your comments. I too regret that you cannot give it 5 stars. My family came in after you and read your comments and the prior guest comment about the fridge. That was the first I knew of any problem with the fridge as we had had the fridge cleaned and checked at the beginning of the season to prevent such problems. Once we knew of the problem we replaced the fridge with a new one so that problem has been resolved. As to the cleaning, we have hired a new cleaning person and gone in great detail what our expectations are as far a clean. I regret that you and the guest prior were inconvenienced. In our welcome book we asked that you notify me of any issues upon check in and I provide you with my direct phone number. Had we been notified upon your arrival by you or the prior guest about the fridge it would have been replaced that same day,(or at a time of your choosing) and I could have dispatched a cleaning crew to meet your expecations. I try very hard to prevent issues from coming up but when they do I work promptly to resolve them, but I must first know about them. I can't fix a problem I am not aware of. As I am not always in the house between each guest I have asked the cleaning crew to review comments left by guests but still encourage anyone checking in at any property to notify the manager or owner of a problem upon arrival, not just upon exiting and then only in a guest book or on a public forum without contacting the owner or manager. I hope you will come and enjoy the Getaway again next year and not let this damper your experience, as the problems have been corrected.

The property was everything the ad listed. The home is large and the lay-out is really great on so many levels. It has many nooks and craney's to discover! The property was everything and more. It is the more I had not anticipated. The peak you see on the left in the picture in the ad, is actually 2 apartments you share parking space with. Everyone around is very friendly and drop by to enjoy the beach, sun, and fun! This is all great if I were on a social trip. I was seeking a "getaway" from alot of people and thought all that yard and all that beach was mine:( After speaking with the owner I was informed I could ask them to leave, but I felt in a pinch and did not want to offend and cause unfriendliness...The owner must have made some calls because the remaining days of my trip were people free and all was mine :), but still felt awkward because it made me feel like a bad guy:( I am sure everyone knew I had called. I do 1 or 2 rentals a summer, and have for 10 years, and this is my first where I called the owner! You can't say it was bad, how can you complain about super nice, helpful, friendly, and social, neighbors, owner, and overall area!?! It is a great rental at a great price. I just did not know about the apartments and did not like having to call the owner in the first place. Let him know ahead if you are seeking total solitude so everyone will know before you come:) I would definately rec. to others with this full disclosure!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your comments. I understand your concern. As it turns out I did not call anyone. I suspect they saw you and just gave you your leaway. I have given my neighbors permission to use the beach when no one else is at the house and they often come and visit with my family when we are there. It is a shame to have a beautiful beach sit empty and not enjoyed. They understand when someone else arrives at the house they need to leave the beach unless they are invited to stay. My neighbors are great people and do a great job of keeping an eye on things for me and it just seems to be the neighborly thing to do. I assure you they all know that if someone is in the house that the people in the house get the beach. I do have a little give and take with my neighbor who has a boat dock but no ramp. He usually lets me (and sometimes others) use his dock and I let him launch his boat from my ramp, it works well for all. I regret you felt awkward, and hope you return in the future.

What a wonderful house and location for our large family reunion/ 50th birthday party. The garden was more than big enough to host all our friends and family and the view was spectacular. The children loved using the canoe and fishing from the neighbor's dock. The small beach area was a hit with the teens! We had a great time and would definately return.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our time at the Get-A-Way River House was great. It is a great location right on the York River and it is very close to Williamsburg and Yorktown. We had 4 small children with us and they loved all the different rooms and misc toys that were provided. The back poarch provided a nice morning coffee and reading with the kids environment. We used the canoe to take the kids out into the river and caught many fish from the neighbors pier. Neighbors were very friendly. I would stay again if we are in the area.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.

Spent a week in the area. This rental was perfect for our family. It was a home away from home for us. We enjoyed the water, boating and canoeing. The house was nice and clean, the neighbors kind and helpful, and the location close to all the places we visited yet very private. We will be back. Thanks so much.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

This is a beautiful location and the house is great for a large family gathering. The kitchen is wonderful and the views terrific, you just don't mind having to cook. The small waffle iron served perfect pumpkin waffles which all enjoyed. The grandchildren loved the upstairs "get away" and toys and the adults simply enjoyed the sunroom, deck and even venturing out on the canoe. The property was clean and the extra small side tables and chairs came in very handy for our Thanksgiving feast. All in all the "Get -a-Way was just perfect for our family and we have some beautiful memories. We felt very blessed for being together at this house in this awesome location.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Virginia. Married my beautiful wife Lisa and we have three great kids who enjoy canoeing & kayaking on the river.
Why the Owner Chose Gloucester:
I chose to buy this vacation home because of its proximity to Williamsburg. It is close enough for a quick drive and just far enough to feel like you are really getting away. Growing up in Williamsburg we often traveled to Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of North Carolina for vacation. Now a lovely drive on the Colonial Parkway over the Coleman Bridge and we are there without the headache of a long traffic filled road trip.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
My family loves to spend a day on the river kayaking, canoeing and lounging on the sandy beach. After a full day on the river we enjoy cooking out with friends, and maybe playing some volley ball or horse shoes. It is so laid back and relaxing for all of us. We Love the hammock and swing.
