Gardner cabin description
Large Modern 5 BR Cabin with warm In Floor Heat, Woodstove, and well-stocked kitchen. Cabin Guests Enjoy Exclusive Recreational and Hunting Rights on 700+ Acres Prime Elk, Mule Deer, Antelope, Bear, Coyote, Bobcat, and Mountain Lion Habitat surrounded by Low Pressure Private land. There's also plenty of nearby public hunting and hiking on Little Sheep and Sheep Mountain. This property is a well traveled elk route leading to Muddy Creek.
It's just south of HWY 69 and is located in GMU 85 which has Over-The-Counter Bull Elk tags for 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons and OTC Either-sex Elk Archery tags. A half a mile from our boundary is the Wolf Springs Ranch which requires 19 points to draw. Colorado has the largest Elk Population in Country. In fact there are about twice as many Elk in Colorado than Montana and about as many as New Mexico, Idaho, and Wyoming combined.
The property is available year round for Hiking, Scouting, and Horseback riding. It's located just a few miles out of the small town of Gardner, CO which has a General store/Restaurant/Deli, a bar, and some real characters. Gardner is located 30 minutes from I-25 in Walsenburg and 30-40 minutes from the resort town of Westcliffe which offers shopping and many dining options.
The setting is convenient, but secluded. The cabin is located at the base of Apache Ridge. There isn't another house to be seen for miles. There are the Snow capped Sangre de Cristos to the West and the Green Mountains to the North and East. From the top of Apache Ridge, you can see Big Sheep and Little Sheep Mountain. The driveway is over 1 mile long and is a dirt road. If rain or snow is in the forecast, 4WD is recommended.
Gardner is a historic town originally founded along the stage route from Westcliffe/Silvercliffe to Walsenburg. Some of the newly paved highway 69 is a proposed part of the 'Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway' passing the landmark Gardner Butte just as you come thru town. The entire area was hunting grounds for Apache, Comanche, and Ute Indians with plenty of artifacts and arrowheads remaining. In the 1960's the town became a mecca for hippies. Communes were formed and at least one still exists. Don't miss the annual 'Gardner Days' Music Festival in July.
While we mostly cater to hunters, this property is a great place to get away from the city lights and see the open sky. It's large enough to accomodate family gatherings and there are loads of attractions within an hour's drive.

Cabin was very nice, very scenic location. Amenities as listed. Clean and roomy. No elk present during our stay. No food or water on property for wildlife, therefore not sure I would classify as prime hunting. Definitely a passing through, luck of the draw type location.

Family Gathering 2013
Family Gathering 2013
Elk Haus was perfect for a large family gathering. We had plenty of space for gathering as a group and if you needed some quiet space, you could find it. The house was clean. We were not there to hunt, but we had plenty to do (or not), you can hike and explore, mountain bike, mountain climb, and relax. Our family looks forward to going there again! Thank you to the owners for prompt responses and an overall great experience!

Elk Hunting Experience
Elk Hunting Experience
I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my hunting trip to your cabin. I have made several trips to Colorado hunting elk and mule deer, but my experience at your cabin was unmatched. I have been successful hunting mule deer and elk, but I was finally successful with the BULL OF A LIFETIME! Your Elk Haus Cabin itself is spectacular, and the elk hunting experience will forever be etched in my mind. It was amazing that we saw elk EVERY DAY and didn't have to hike 15 miles to find them. The fact that the elk herd was on your property regularly or on the nearby and accessible BLM land was amazing. I'll definately be back next year with my family and look forward to another incredible experience.

Just wanted to drop you a short note to tell you how much we enjoyed our hunting trip at your cabin in Gardner, CO last year. We were lucky enough to take two 5×6 bulls and one nice 5×5 mule deer from our group of four hunters. We look forward to hunting with you again this year.

My family had a wonderful vacation at the Elk Haus . The cabin is awesome. There is plenty of room,it is tastefully decorated and in a very private setting. We are not hunters but nature lovers so the Elk Haus works for both. The scenery is beautiful, wildlife is everywhere and lots of hiking trails. We took a lot of small trips (Sand Dunes,Pueblo, Pike's Peak and Florence antique hunting) all within an hour or so to the cabin . Star gazing at night was the best because it is so bright were we live.We will book again in the near future. WE LOVE THE ELK HAUS HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE OWNER IS VERY NICE AND HELPFUL Thanks you for the best vacation ever !!!!!!!!.

Why the Owner Chose Gardner:
We bought this as a secluded getaway and later discovered what prime Elk Hunting Habitat it is. We got the recreational lease on the state land which adjoins the property to give us over 700 Acres of Exclusive Hunting and Recreational rights. Then we formed the 'Elk Haus Cabin' available for rental.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The cabin has all the amenities of home including electricity (which can be rare in this area). It is 1.5 miles off the hard surface road and secluded w/ amazing mountain views in every direction.
