At the foot of Government Mountain in the heart of the Cabinet Wilderness, for rent just to you, is a very private 40-acre wilderness retreat. This magnificent setting, unspoiled, unfenced, home to elk and deer, bordering on National Forest from above and Avista's forest from below, offers a wilderness experience as authentic as any that can be found in America.

Eight vacationers can lodge comfortably in the 1664 sq. ft. solar powered log cabin, equipped with 2 queen-size beds, 2 twins, and sofa bed. The upper story boasts a huge room for kids to play and sleep. The two downstairs bedrooms have magnificent views toward Government Mountain. The vaulted kitchen and living room, each with their six by six foot windows, face south toward the Clark Fork River and the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. Between the kitchen and living room, a wood-burning stove keeps the home warm in the winter. TV/DVD player are upstairs just outside the third bedroom and movies are available for rent at the Atkins convenience store a mile away. There is a small porch in front and a covered porch out the back, accessible directly through the laundry room.

Hiking, fishing, boating, hunting, and snowmobiling opportunities are abundant. Schweitzer ski resort is an hour away by car. The Ross Creek Giant Cedar Grove is 30 minutes way on highway 56 and, for near by hiking trails the trails website is a good resource. Trout Creek, 25 minutes away, is leading destination for those fishing for Bass and Trout.

If you are a mushroom hunter, chanterelle and especially boletus are easy to find in April and early May.

For local color, Toby’s Tavern, just across the Clark Fork River in Noxon, is a friendly place where the entire family is welcome to take in hilarious, as well as, profound pioneer memorabilia that adorn its walls.

Daily essentials can be purchased at the Noxon Mercantile or the Aitken's Quick Stop nearby, though we prefer to shop 45 minutes away at the Super Walmart in Sand Point, Idaho. Also, the Mennonite deli on Highway 200 at the Bull River crossing offers the very best in baked items, fresh produce and other food products at reasonable prices.

For a small town, Sand Point, Idaho offers fantastic dinning, shopping and entertainment opportunities many cities would envy. Driving along Highway 200 to Sand Point is breathtaking, flanked by thickly forested mountains, it follows the Clark Fork River and then the Eastern portion of Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced Pon-der-ray), the fifth deepest in the United States with 111 miles of shoreline.

The National Bison range, a scenic one and a half hour drive away, is excellent for viewing bison, pronghorn antelope and other grassland animals in their natural habitat.

The Cabinet Mountains, part of the Rocky Mountains, located in northwest Montana, home to Mule deer, Elk, Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Black bear, Grizzly Bear, and Wolverine, disturbed little by man, is one of the most wild places left in America. Here you will find people friendly, day to day life easy and carefree, but, ultimately, it will be your choice to let seep into your soul the essence of these quiet and pristine experiences that you will find here, which we call our second home, and many revere and dare to call "God's Country".

Thanksgiving has become a trip to "Grandmother's House"; Taveling over the river and through the woods. Actually it is a trip to my nephews house; over the mountains and through the snow. This seasonal celebration has grown in familio popularity and we have had to expand. On VRBO I found theperfect solution. This mountain retreat was perfect, pet friendly, and remote but not isolated. The cabin is definitately Green! solar power, mountain well, generator, totally self contained. Still with all the amenities and creature comforts. We served up a Thanksgiving dinner for 6 that was amazing. Following dinner, by candle light we sat ont he front porch and watch the stars come out. The property is beautiful. Just walking the property took at least 40 minutes. The dogs thought they had there own off leash park. The trains are entertaining; rumbling, fast, big... scared me the first time I heard it but amazed me how quickly we grew accustom. A good distance away, not a threat to the dogs; it took them a little longer to get used to the rumble. This cabin is a well maintianed gem. I will rent again.

This jewel of a log cabin in the woods far exceeded our expectations. We hit a home run with this out of the way rental and it couldn't have been more perfect for our 4 day rejuvenating retreat. We drove to our son's wedding in Plains, Montana just a little more than an hour away up the beautiful Clark Fork River (think..."A River Runs Through It"). The cabin sits all alone behind a locked gate at the end of the road on a large parcel of land. No one else in sight. We could hear elk bugle in the surrounding forest and saw fresh deer tracks each morning at the salt lick. The scenery was divine, looking across an unobstructed view to the steep timbered, ravined mountains that rose like giants across the river. Rock cliffs sit directly behind the cabin up the hill aways, and the light played across them in the afternoon and evening as the sun began to set. The sunsets and the early morning sun from the front porch warmed us as we sat on the front porch drinking our 'French pressed' coffee. Our 2 small dogs played for hours in the big grassy areas surrounding the cabin. The cabin was impeccably clean, adequate in all ways, and spacious. It is obvioius that the caretakers (and builders) of the property and cabin knew what they were doing...the layout couldn't be better. Though a great couples get away, I can imagine a family with children would enjoy the room, the play areas outdoors, and a disconnect from the trappings of the modern world. Our cell phone worked when needed and there was a TV with DVDs. There is a store just a mile down the main highway that has a good selection of movies to rent, if wanted. We just relished the scenery, the quiet and needed nothing more for entertainment. The off the grid location has a very efficient power system for lights and water. Cooking, refrigeration and hot water are provided with propane...no fuss, no muss. Nice sofas, comfy beds, view windows. Joyce, one of the caretakers, came to meet us at the property and show us around upon our arrival. She told us about the solar powered system, which worked like a charm. We never saw her again, but I did talk to her a couple of times on the phone while we were there.. she's a delight. Though we never used the big efficient wood stove (wood provided), it allows a very comfortable winter time experience here in the most beautiful corner of Montana. We have stayed at many VRBO rentals over the years, this one is in the top 3 overall, and the #1 for privacy and value.

We spent 5 nights at this beautifully serene mountain home. It is very well taken care of by two of the nicest caretakers one could only imagine, Joyce and Dave are so wonderful!!! We enjoyed the gorgeous views and the peace and quiet this cabin offers. There are trails to walk right on the property and we had deer walk right into the yard. The road into the property is well maintained and most vehicles could make it in (unless you are driving a low profile vehicle). It is in a great location and located in the heart of the Cabinet Mountain wlderness area and very close to the Clark Fork River.....be sure to visit the Noxon rapids dam, just south of Noxon, it is quite a sight!! This is the place if you are looking for a very layed-back retreat from your busy lives and our dogs loved it too!!! Thank you for a wonderful vacation spot....we would love to come back!!!!

My husband I stayed at this cabin for 2 weeks in June/July 2011. The cabin is very quaint and charming. It was clean and neat. The pictures are not deceiving. The beauty of this property is in its setting and solitude. Elk cows and calves played in the yard, and mule deer and whitetail deer visited regularly. The owner was extremely helpful in answering our questions about the area, etc. The caretakers were delightful and extremely helpful, but not at all intrusive. If you stay at this cabin you must go and enjoy a few meals at the Naughty Pine Saloon! Great food and reasonably priced.

The description, photos and explanations for this property were right on. It couldn't have been much better. I've never stayed at a place with such a complete makeup. Anything you need was right there, down to the boxes of Kleenex. The caretakers were very helpful and very personable and the people around Noxon are extremely friendly. Don't miss a visit Toby's. just ask them about the ladies with the bras. If you're looking for a quiet, scenic place to visit you can't go wrong here. Watching the deer just outside the window is worth the price (which is very reasonable).

                  Year Purchased: 2002

About the owner: I live in San Jose, California. I have been a software engineer for the past 15 years. Currently, I work for Walmart. I was born and raised in and around San Francisco. I like biking, hiking, and playing scrabble with my wife. We have two sons and a daughter.

                  Why the Owner Chose Noxon:
This was my primary residence before I moved to Seattle in 2005 and is now my favorite place to take a vacation. I could honestly say that the 2 and 1/2 years I spent here were the best of my life. I found Noxon while driving about the north west. I loved this area best of all for it has amazing natural beauty but no sprawling development, and the friendliest of people who will wave to you from their cars as they pass you by in yours.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peace, beauty, and freedom describe this place best. I have seen bear, deer and elk on the property. I love to follow the elk and deer trails up into the mountain behind the property. With no fences anywhere to stop me, I can walk freely below the property all the way to the Clark Fork river. Having had many stressful jobs, coming here, I feel as though I have arrived and need to do nothing but absorb and be contented by the awesome surroundings.
