The temperature is pleasant in the summer and cold in the winter - there is usually enough snow for sledding. The wrap-around deck is perfect for relaxing as you look right out into the trees (not the trunks!) Watch the sun stream through the trees in the morning and look at the stars at night. Whether you want to relax, feed the blue jays with peanuts we provide, watch movies, play Wii, or hike, boat, fish, and raft, this is your location. In winter, sled and tube at the Alta Sierra Ski and Tubing Park in nearby Shirley Meadows. This quiet, small mountain community is close to the Kern County Desert, the historic town of Kernville, Isabella Lake, and the Trail of 100 Giants. You can be busy every minute, or do nothing but relax.
You'll be surprised at the well-equipped kitchen - it's just as good as home. We have a milkshake maker, Cuisinart Griddler and Panini Press, Coffee and Espresso maker, blender, smoothie maker - whatever you want! If you don't want to cook, walk to the Greenhorn Grill Thursdays through Sunday, or drive down to Kernville for a burger at Cheryl's Cafe or a fine Italian dinner. It's up to you!
We have a toy chest with toddler toys, and extra hats and gloves for winter (we ask that you leave them if you use them). Two wide-screen televisions - one in the living room and one in bedroom four, both with DVDs, let parents watch something different than the kids!
Please contact the owner for occupancy per the current Kern County ordinance. Please be aware we are not a PARTY cabin. We are located in a quiet residential neighborhood where people live for peace and quiet, and we want to be good neighbors.

Alta Sierra Kamala Kabin - Your Home Away from Home.
Year Purchased: 2008
Why the Owner Chose Alta Sierra
My husband and I were always trying to figure out how to go live close to nature but at the same time be available for our kids, grandkids, and our aging parents. Then it hit us - buy a vacation cabin close to home so we can get away with our entire family to enjoy nature. You know what people say about some places - like Bakersfield where we live? It's close to everything - beach, big city, mountains, desert. That's why we chose Alta Sierra - because it is so conveniently located to our home in Bakersfield, as well as Isabella Lake where people love to fish, boat, jet ski, etc. It's just 1 1/2 from our house but at 6,200 ft. elevation. And it's minutes from Shirley Meadows where in winter we can ski, tube, and snowboard. The kids love walking out the door of the cabin to sled. I can take day trips to the desert - places like Red Rock Canyon State Park, Fossil Falls or the the Trail of 100 Giants (giant sequoia trees), or I can just sit on the balcony and watch the birds. Personally, that's my favorite thing to do - relax outdoors. I even plug my laptop in on the balcony so I can work out there. Best of all, it's a small mountain community that has not been commercialized. We get snow in winter, cooler temps in summer - the best of all worlds. We have the occasional "problems" that come from being in the forest. Sometimes the television or wireless goes out, or even the electricity (that only happened once - on our moving in weekend!) - but it hardly ever happens. It can be hard to park in winter. But that's all part of the experience of getting out of town and into nature and the forest. Going into our third year, we are so glad we purchased a cabin in Alta Sierra.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
Kamala is not really a "Cabin." It's a completly equipped two-story, four bedroom home that was new when we bought it. The kitchen is better equipped than my kitchen at home, and we have toys for the grandkids, etc., our Wii, Guitar Hero, etc. and we decided to make all that available to renters. It really is a home. Our three children and nine (soon to be 10) grandchildren absolutely love coming to stay. But after a couple of years, we realized we can't be up there 365 days a year, so we should rent it out while maintaining some use for ourselves. Because we furnished it comfortably for a family - because we are a family who spends time there - our guests get to experience a real home and not a typical rental.
Kamala means "born of the Lotus" or perfection and peacefulness. We hope you enjoy Kamala as much as we do. Welcome!
Owner's Map of Alta Sierra
I'm a retired seventh-grade language arts teacher, and now I work as a photographer and artist. (In fact, all the photographs at Kamala are my work.) My husband is semi-retired - he's tried it a few times but keeps going back to work. We've been married 41 years, so we must have done something right. We've got three daughters who have three children each, making nine grandchildren. But our daughter who lives in Colorado has number ten on the way! We're lucky - six of the grandkids live within a mile of us, and my sister, her kids and their families live in Bakersfield also. My parents are still alive, at 92 and 87, and are also here, so life is busy all the time.

Once gain, we enjoyed the cabin. Thanksgiving 2011: Joe loved playing Nintendo DS with Matt. Jen loved working on a puzzle and lunch at the Greenhorn Grill. Sophie loved watching Glee. Sarah loved shopping in Kernville. Matt loved hiking and playing DS. We laughed a lot at the Turducken! From now on, plain old turkey for us. We will return. The Constantines

We enjoyed our stay at Kamala immensely. We brought our scrapbooking, explored up the Kern River, and rested. The kitchen made it so easy to prepare meals without fuss and a lot of energy, so there was plenty of time to enjoy just being here. The cabin is warm and inviting and obviously loved. Mornings on the deck are so pleasant, looking out over the trees and watching the birds and squirrels. Even a little chipmunk would come up if we were sitting just inside by the television. It was also a treat to be able to follow the U.S. Open. Thank you for opening your cabin to outsiders. We didn't get to Frog Meadow (one of the most beautiful places in the world) to hunt for the elusive largest Sequoia, but maybe later.

Dear Susan and Mark, Your cabin is wonderfully equipped and extremely comfortable. The Kramers all enjoyed relaxing on the porch, seeing birds, and watching a movie at night. The Greenhorn Grill was great. Some of us are from New York City but others will hopefully be back to hike and enjoy the outdoors. Thank you, The Kramers et al

Susan, I just wanted to drop you a note thanking you for the use of your lovely mountain home. We had a blast. I have wanted to get my family from Ohio out to see beautiful Alta Sierra and the surrounding landscape as words and pictures won’t do it justice. The space was perfect for our group and a good time was had by all.

We want to thank you so much for sharing your beautiful cabin with out family. We enjoy coming up to Alta Sierra and we had a BLAST out on the lake. My kids, ages 10, 7, and 3, had fun finding moths, sticks, rocks and playing on the deck. We had facials with our friends, enjoyed the peace and quiet. The weather was fantastic too. Your home is absolutely gorgeous and we can’t wait to come back! The photography is amazing too. Again, many thanks for a fun vacation. The McCaulays PS Feeding the blue jays is awesome.

Dear Susan and Family, We had a wonderful two day rafting trip! We all got wet and enjoyed the weather. Hard to believe, but no one fell out of the raft. The cabin was great and very comfortable for everyone. We played games, took walks and ate at the Greenhorn Grill several times. The staff there was magnificent. Everything we could possibly need was here for us. You have truly gone to great lengths to make sure everyone who visits will have a great stay. The Littles

Thank you for letting us stay in your cabin. We all had an amazing weekend and time staying here. We shared great memories and had great fun playing UNO and board games. We had family dinners, we went to the river and the lake and we rented a boat. It was lots of fun. We will never forget this place and we will miss it a lot. The movies were great too – what a great spring break spot!

Thank you for opening your beautiful cabin to our family. We had an amazing time here sledding, building an igloo, playing cards, Chutes and Ladders, Wii and movie time. Our family enjoyed the time we shared here and all the memories we will take back with us. Your cabin is so warm and welcoming. Everything we needed was here. The snow and scenery is incredible. Again, thank you for such a wonderful Spring Break.
