We spent a delightful 3-day President's Day weekend at this house. It is very comfortable, with all the amenities. House is secluded with wonderful views, and the tower is indeed great as a lookout spot for wildlife! The house is very bright and airy. Easy access to trails for snowshoe or cross country skiing. We had an outstanding dinner one night at Ariel's restaurant in Brookfield.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, girls getaway, age 55+.

My family of four stayed here and felt perfectly at home in this charming house. The house is quirky in the best way and we loved it. The grounds are beautiful and fun to explore. The owners have stocked the house with all the things guests need to feel comfortable during their stay. This is clearly a special place and I highly recommend it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

My Wife and I had a remarkable stay at Paul and Eileen's beautiful home! They could not have been more kind or helpful. A tranquility that gave us pause from our city lives and furthered our yearning to live in such a magical place. This place has a power, I tell you.. And for a more than fair cost! A great deal if I say so myself. It is furnished with a tasteful eye that embraces charming simplicity and gives no ails or discomforts. A Southern France country feel with all of the scope and splendor of Vermont. This house sits on the land as if it were as natural as the trees surrounding it. Wonderful antique stove, big kitchen excellent selection of books, complete with a deck to sit and read. A contemporary version of the Thoreauvian/Emersonian spirit. Go and you will not forget or regret your decision!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

I rented this house to share with family from out west during a wet June weekend. Despite the weather it was an enchanting spot! Cousins from California loved being there and will remember Vermont's beautiful views for a long time, especially the sight of a young doe grazing outside our window as we ate breakfast. The house itself was comfortable and welcoming with plenty of room. Our only regret: a family wedding prevented us from spending even more time there!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this beautiful house the first weekend of May. We decided that we needed a break from our normal routine so we narrowed our mini-vacation choices down to two houses - one in the Catskills, and this one in Vermont. This home had so much character, beautiful windows - designed for taking in the glorious views....sunsets. We were able to cook a lovely meal here - the kitchen is equipped with a Viking range and oven (something I really appreciated). If you're looking for complete peace...this is the place to go! After a quick grocery trip to Barre (20mins away) the home literally had everything one could need. We also would like to make a special note that the owners and the couple who take care of the home in their absence, were so kind and professional -- in the end, that sealed the deal for us. We would love to return at our next opportunity.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

House is very welcoming and attractive. Vibrant architectural features and woodwork. Wonderful light and views from every room. Well stocked country style kitchen with modern appliances. Plenty of hot water for showers. Very comfortable beds. It's a very versatile space, and cozy and spacious at the same time. Peaceful and beautiful setting, near charming town of Brookfield. We did some cross-country skiing in the area. Scenic drive up to Montpelier. Easy access to interstate, but house is in the hills and completely sheltered from any noise or evidence of busy life. A very restorative stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

We stayed here in December 2010 as a base for snowshoe adventures in central Vermont and were very pleased with the quality of the accommodations. The kitchen appliances are top notch and the beds are very comfortable. The property is nicely secluded but not too far from Hwy 89. Very nice for a stroll around the surrounding woods and there's a cliff on the east side of the property with a great view of the valley below. Central heating is very effective and there's a wood stove with lots of wood as well. The house was perfect for our needs and we hope to return again soon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We rented this vacation home for two weeks and really enjoyed our stay, which was close to family we only see once a year. It is in a very rural VT setting with a great view. The master and guest room beds are very comfortable, and it has a very nice kitchen and washer/dryer set-up. While eating breakfast, wild turkeys visited most mornings and pecked under the apple trees. You won't find a better value at this price.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

This is the second summer we have rented here. The property is exceptionally beautiful and the house very comfortable and spacious, with many interesting pieces of country furniture. This is a relatively unspoiled part of Vermont with a great community spirit. It's hard to keep up with the many interesting concerts (watch Chandler Music Hall calendar), cultural events, fairs and flea markets in the area. Be sure to stop in at the Three Bean Cafe in Randolph, a relaxed and friendly place to get a decent lunch, great baked goods, and a 2nd hand copy of the New York Times!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1979
Why the Owner Chose Brookfield:
We were looking for land to build when we discovered an unfinished house designed by an architect and designer. We had a great Chelsea, Vt. builder remodel the house. We brought back the fields from the invading trees and put up hay for a few years. Now, living further away, we've had to content ourselves with flowers and upkeep until we retire. UPDATE: Paul is effectively retiring and will be making regular trips to VT for work on house, fields, and woods.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
We work on the flower garden, try to keep back the trees, hike, take long bike rides with friends, cross-country ski, and eat and drink the local products. Its an amazingly peaceful place to be. The stars blaze at night and the sunsets are often absolutely gorgeous. The demands of work keep us in NYC far to much.
