Cadillac Mountain: At 1,530 feet, Cadillac Mountain is not only the tallest mountain in Acadia National Park, but also the tallest mountain along the eastern coast of the United States. Rising high above the town of Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain offers magnificent views of the Porcupine Islands and Frenchman Bay. Explore the summit of this granite mountain along a .3-mile trail, which includes wayside exhibits about natural and human history. Portions of this trail are accessible to wheelchair users.
Cadillac Mountain is accessible via a winding, narrow, 3.5-mile road. The road is closed from December 1 through April 14 and whenever weather conditions (e.g., dense fog or ice) require.
Acadia National Park: In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson set aside 6000 acres (within what is now Acadia National Park) as Sieur de Monts National Monument. With the acquisition of more land and private support and funding, in 1919 President Wilson signed an act establishing Lafayette National Park. In 1929 the parks name was changed to Acadia.
Acadia National Park was established to protect the area's spectacular scenic values, Maine's rock bound coast, its coastal and its offshore islands as characterized by the geologic features, natural history and the native plant and animal life. Forty five miles of rustic carriage roads weave around the mountains and through the valleys of Acadia National Park, the gift of philanthropist John D Rockefeller, Jr., and family. Rockefeller, a skilled horseman, desired to travel on motor free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. His efforts resulted in roads with sweeping vistas and close up views of the landscape.

Clean, comfortable, well maintained cottage on a beautiful lake. Everything we needed was provided and the property was better than expected. Our group of 2 families consisted of 10 people. We had plenty of room and were very comfortable. The kids (ages 14 - 6) spent hours swimming and loved the canoe and kayaks that were provided. The area is very peaceful and relaxing. Acadia, Bar Harbor, Bangor, and Bucksport were all within an hour drive and easy to find from the cottage. Fort Knox and Acadia were excellent day trips that we all loved. Acadia's Junior Ranger Program, Tidepool school, Sand Beach, and walking the bar at low tide in Bar Harbor were favorites. We'd highly recommend this property and would love to return. The owner's were very easy to work with, provided plenty of information on the area and answered all of our questions ahead of time. The security deposit was back in my bank account within 4 days of our check out.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

House was roomy and comfortable. Older home - foundation leaned in different directions depending on where you were in home. Swim platform and diving board shown in photos is no longer there - kids were dissapointed. Close to Bar Harbor and Acadia.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, pet owners, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your review and for renting our cottage. The swim platform in the photo belonged to a neighbor and has since been removed for safety reasons. We purchased a new swim platform this year and it is located directly in front of the cottage. Glad to hear you had a great Maine vacation.

The cottage was fully equipped with EVERYTHING we needed for our stay. The children enjoyed romping in the lake and feeding the ducks/loons who swam close to them. Wireless internet connection made it easy to check on family members left behind. Very quiet location.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Over the memorial day weekend 2012, we as a group of five families from Manchester, CT rented the Sandy Cove cottage for 3 nights. Even prior to arriving here, we had seen pictures of this beautiful cottage by the lake. All our expectations were met when we reached the cottage. The cottage was fully equipped and had all the amenities as described in the description. The attention to detail in furnishing the home and the collectibles was amazing. The large hall made it the center point for all our indoor activities and games. The morning view from the hall to the lake was breath taking. We loved the quietness of the neighborhood and the pristine water. Kayaks and canoe helped us explore the perimeter of the lake. We also had a nice time grilling. The drive to the nearest grocery was about 30 minutes - but we were prepared with our groceries and hence a non-issue. We toured the Acadia National park area and the entire Mount Desert and had a great vacation time. We would certainly recommend this to my friends who visit Maine and Acadia.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Awesome! Exceeded our expectations. The listing accurately describes the property and the cottage is very clean and well-maintained. The owner's were easy to contact and pleasant to work with. There is even a guide put together thoughtfully by the owners with everything you could want to know about local attractions and restaurants. The ducks (even Mergansers) stopped by every day and the loons were nearby. Perfect jogging. The kids were in the water whenever we were "home." The location is perfect with Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Fort Know, Bucksport, and Bangor nearby. Even the weather was perfect! Our family grew up in Bangor and we brought some of our family home to Sandy Cove Cottage, near our cousin's cottage (many wonderful memories growing up) on Branch Lake, Acadia, and Bar Harbor. Sandy Cove Cottage is a wonderful getawy and we would definitely recommend the property to anyone who wants to relax, enjoy, and have a wonderful time! We did not bring a pet, but I am sure they would love Sandy Cove. Enjoy!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We had a fabulous time. We had my brother and his family and it was a great place to relax with the kids. It was very quiet, we slept well. There was a fully stocked kitchen, we only needed the perishables. There were tons of towels and bedding. We are planning to go again this year!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We were very excited to have discovered this gem on stunning Beech Hill Pond. A beautiful and spacious home it was the ideal base camp for our large family vacationing in Maine for the first time. From spending a family day in the cottage itself to visiting nearby Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor or Bangor, the cottage and location offered plenty to keep our family of three generations very happy.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We had a great time at our Beech Hill Pond getaway. The setting was glorious with a private beach on a beautiful pond. We spent hours in the water, on the dock and canoeing around Beech Hill Pond. Jumping from the Junk Pork Rock after a 20 minute canoe ride was exhilirating! The house itself was very nice and comfortable with plenty of room for our group to spread out. All of the necessary tools for cooking were on hand in the kitchen and each of the bedrooms was comfortable and the house quickly came to feel like home. Large grocery stores were nearby in Ellsworth (about 30 minutes to Hannaford's) and plenty to do beyond in Acadia and Bar Harbor. When we return to the Acadia area, we'll certainly be back a the Cottage at Beech Hill Pond.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children, tourists without a car.

My family--8 adults and 2 children under two years old--enjoyed the house very much! The lay out of the house was perfect. The open living space allowed us all to enjoy each other's company, as well as having space to ourselves. The yard and "beach" space were spectacular. The owners have sand toys available. Every evening was spent on the deck and in the back yard....dinner on the porch and then a fire in the fire pit. The house was well stocked with every kitchen item you could need--making it very easy to cook our meals. The neighbors were quiet and kind. Very peaceful lake. The 45 minute drive to Acadia was fine. It felt long on some days, but overall it was fine. There are a lot of fun stops to make along the way back to the house.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

I took my whole family to Maine for the first time. The Cottage was beautiful and very roomy. The Lake was so much fun. This place will always have a special place in my heart because my 4 year old son learned how to swim there. He loved the slide in the lake and the neighbors were nice.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

About the owner: The Cowans, formerly from Maine now living in the mid-Atlantic region.
Why the Owner Chose Ellsworth:
We are originally from Maine and purchased the cottage in 2005 to ensure our children have the opportunity to experience summers in Maine the way we did as kids. Beech Hill Pond is a very special place as it is close to Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, but provides a peaceful retreat after a day of hiking and sightseeing. The lake is great for kayaking and canoeing, or just watching the Loons.
