Welcome!
What is unique about our 'on the Rocks' location?
If you have ever dreamed of having a home on a cliff overlooking the ocean, this is the ultimate Maine experience! Our house sits on the same dramatic oceanfront cliff as the picturesque Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (selected for the U.S. Maine commemorative quarter)and has forever ocean views! Stroll to the lighthouse along the Cliff Rd for an AM coffee/fresh-baked muffin at the Seagull Shop or in the evening for fabulous sunsets! Bring plenty of film. Photo opps galore! This is picture postcard Maine with fishing villages, harbors, and coves. The movie Time In A Bottle (Kevin Cosner) was filmed here.
Why select our house?
Watch waves crash into the rocks below from floor-to-ceiling window walls in the great room/dining room, master bedroom, and picture window in master bath. Awaken to sunrises over the ocean, seabirds, busy lobster boats, and COOL northeast breezes directly from the sea ! We are on the dramatic Atlantic Ocean side of the peninsula - not the bay. And if you are lucky to experience a storm at sea, you are in for a spectacular show, viewed from the comfort of your living room chair! Sleep at night to the waves lapping, or watch the moonlight dance like diamonds on the water from your bed in the master bedroom (Jeanne's favorite sight).
Our contemporary home was designed and built by an architect for his personal retirement, but he became ill. We fell in love with the open light-filled plan with lofty cedar cathedral ceilings in ALL rooms, even the baths! Three sliders open to the ocean deck. High clerestory windows in the great room pull in even more ocean breezes and the large size room welcomes families and get-togethers. All rooms are on one floor. The well-equipped kitchen has a 4'x7' eating island and abundant cabinets along 3 walls. Furnishings are Ethan Allen, and Pottery Barn. Our baths were redone 2010. See more photos and info in our descriptions on the site.
Our location is a nature retreat, back from the road and noise, perfect for building special memories, yet nearby are 2 restaurants within 1/2 mile, within 3 miles is a white quartz sand beach, within 5 miles, an intertidal preserve, well-stocked grocery, fresh lobster right off the boat at Shaw's Lobster pound/restaurant, Boat Tours to puffins, seals, & Monhegan Island, historical fort, art galleries, antiques, kayaking, local crafts, etc. Quaint shops and restaurants are found in Damariscotta (15 miles), Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor (45 min.). Further afield are the Owl's Head Aeronautical Museum, the Wyeth Collection, Farnsworth Museum, Rockland (1 hour). Brochures are in the house with more to discover. Or you can unwind and do nothing - and enjoy living by the edge of the sea!

We celebrated our daughter's birthday week at "On The Rocks"! She will have memories of climbing to the top of the lighthouse, dinner at Round Pond fishing village, breakfast on the deck while watching the lobster boats, being made a mermaid in the sand at the beach, and seeing seals for the first time! We all agreed it was the greatest "old fashion vacation" ever! - It brought back lots of memories for me! P.S. The constant sound of waves breaking on the rocks - PRICELESS!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

After having a lobster roll at "Red's" in Wiscasset, we arrived at On The Rocks, still decked in Autumn splender. "Frankenstorm Sandy" was coming up the coast. We were delighted to find strong surf, and continued to hear the crashing waves throughout the night - one of the many reasons we love staying at On The Rocks so much! This was our 3rd stay here, so we quickly settled in to a relaxing vacation, taking photos of the many moods that we so enjoy in Oct., an early fog, sunset brilliance, a dripping rain, and even a gorgeous full moon. We got up early to photograph the spectacular sunrises over Monhegan Island - often going back to bed! We had some memorable chowders and seafoods, topped off with a Twin Lobster Dinner at Samoset, and several precooked hot lobsters from Penniman's directly across the street from the drive entrance. As reports of "Sandy's" approach raised apprehensions, we debated whether to head home early. But we would be driving into the storm, and the opportunity to witness a hurricane (indeed - "The Storm of the Century"!) on the edge of the ocean was too tempting to pass up. We also thought it might be beneficial if we remained in the house so that we could report any problems, knowing Jeanne and Ted would be concerned about "Sandy's" potential damage. So we "hunkered down" and prepared for a show. And what a show it was! Truly a unique experience. The "Symphony of the Sea" was breathtaking. Luckily we lost power for only a few hours on Monday night. To our surprise we retained power throughout the worst of the storm. We took picture after picture (literally hundreds), each wave suggesting the next one would be even more spectacular - and often they were! The pounding and crashing continued all night and into Tuesday, and the wind was at 60-70+ mph on the wind gauge on the wall. The surf was still performing, the entire coastline a foaming cauldron, as we packed up and secured the house. We stopped by the lighthouse where a large crowd had gathered. Facing the long drive home, we finally had to tear ourselves away from the display. All in all - a fantastic vacation! Jeanne and Ted - Thank you so much for the opportunity to not only share such a special spot on the coast, but also to have witnessed the fury- and Beauty! - of a major storm.Did you find this review helpful? About: Hello! We are Jeanne and Ted, and this is our dream home. Ted, an engineer, was impressed with the solid construction. Jeanne an artist, was 'blown away' by the panoramic open ocean view and everchanging views of the sea and sky. The surrounding natural beauty inspires some of Jeanne's paintings found on the walls.
Why Pemaquid Point:
Jeanne has wonderful memories of her youth, painting and studying at Schoodic Point in the Winter Harbor area. We wanted to find a home with the dramatic cliffs she so fondly remembered but closer than being so far north, and easier to reach by car. Yet, we wanted the private seclusion of a real Maine experience without the crowds of tourists. We explored several peninsulas before we discovered Pemaquid Point, - then we looked no further!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is a year round house with heat, so our favorite time to come here is during the quiet seasons. Ted likes to read in one of our comfy Ekornes Stressless chairs, and loves watching the huge waves after a storm at sea. Jeanne finds lots of subjects to paint at the lighthouse and or at the picturesque harbors. Our children and grandchildren love the family reunions and call their vacations 'an old-fashioned vacation'! Our rental season is usually from mid June through the first half of September. We hope you will enjoy living 'on the Rocks' as much as we do!
