Nestled comfortably within the graceful curve of Puako Bay, this home site is protected by a whale’s tail-shaped lava outcropping. A light and airy house with cathedral ceilings, it offers peaceful comfort, spectacular views and the gentle sounds of water lapping on the shore. Set Located well back from Puako Beach Drive, next door to the tiny historic Hokuloa Church, the Whale’s Tail is a surprise delight: nothing from the street side prepares you for the landscaped yard, large and sunny patio, covered lanai…right next to the sandy beach and quiet waters of the Pacific Ocean. Configured to sleep eight in three bedrooms with three baths, the Whale’s Tail offers views of the bay, Maui and its volcanic mountain Haleakala, and our own Kohala Mountains

Combine the sandy beach next to your back yard with the thoughtfully placed windows that give you excellent views from nearly every spot in the house—upstairs and down—and you’ll love the Whale’s Tail for you Hawaii vacation. Not only is the entire ocean-facing wall built with windows, but also an additional row of large clerestory windows above them ensures that the second- floor loft space and bedrooms have ocean and sunset views. The décor throughout the home echoes the beach, ocean, sky and mountain environment: clean white walls, sandy shades of upholstery, blue-gray cabinetry and tiles of sand and sea colors. Original, local artwork—even in the bathrooms—adds to your sense of place in this very special corner of paradise.

We stayed in this wonderful house for a week-long vacation with our 3 young children. The house is great! Everything you could possibly want was provided for: beach chairs, coolers, towels, beach toys, all kitchen items for cooking, an outdoor grill, etc. The home is right on the beach at Puako. We especially like the beach here: there's a coral reef a couple hundred yards out which protects the beach from big waves, so the beach here was like a big salt-water swimming pool, fairly level and shallow. It was great to be steps from the ocean, and just down the road from Hapuna Beach and some of the best beaches in the world. Families with small children will love this home. There's a gate between the back yard and the path to the beach. This home is also a great "base camp" for trips to Waimea, Kewaihae, Kona etc. Finally, we were very impressed with the "2 Papayas" rental agents: they were very helpful and professional throughout.

Whales Tail is our favorite ride ever! We left on Nov. 4 and today is the day after Thanksiving so it is most appropriate that we give our thanks to our favorite escape into our personal serenity. We have spent well over 100 days at this little stretch of paradise. It is so private and unique. It sits in your own private bay where we swim and often see not another soul. Sunsets from the water, palm trees waving from our porch, and a rare sandy beach to explore. Whether we jump in the car and drive 5 minutes to a multitude of restaurants, or stay in and BBQ, this has all the comforts of our home...from brewed Kona coffee mornings to sipping our favorite drinks from the porch gazing at the sailboats in the bay. We give thanks to have such a wonderful retreat to return every year.

Whale's Tail Ohana house was wonderful for the 4 of us. Spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Maui, whales breaching just offshore, nice calm little beach protected by reef, lots of space and privacy, and Mary and her crew made the stay absolutely wonderful.

This was our 4 th trip to Hawaii, 3 rd to Kohala coast. Everyone of our group of 6 had high expectations, and each for different reason. This was to be a celebration of my father's 80 B-day and a graduation gift for my daughter after a challenging medical training. Romantic trip for my son and his girlfriend. Relaxing time for my single 18 year old son and a quiet nostalgic time for me. We were not disappointed! The beautiful bay, mountains, turtles, singing birds....and the beach house itself spacious with wide veranda and patio so tastefully set up, furnished and decorated was soothing in itself. The kitchen is very well equipped in everything a gourmet cook could possibly need...all 3 of my children believe they are in this category. They cooked and barbecued. We celebrated all our events under the starry dark Hawaiian sky. I had my quiet nostalgic time and read a historic novel about Catherine of Aragon. We enjoyed walks to the local store for many things and it was very practical to have basic products delivered before our arrival. My father is convinced this was the best vacation in his life, but would not mind returning to improve some impressions. We still did not managed to climb on Mauna Kea, but we had a great glimpse of it in the setting sun one evening. I hope we can return soon. I strongly recommend it to any family or group of friends.

We spent 7 fabulous days at the Whale's Tail. It is a wonderful home, comfortable, very well equipped and furnished, spotless clean inside and outdoors. An excellent internet connection was a major plus! Mary from "2 Papayas" met us upon our arrival, showed us the home and left us with excellent written descriptions regarding the home, surrounding area and activities. A perfect beginning! Mary even checked in with us 2 days later to make sure everything was going fine. The location was priceless, absolute peace and quiet, with very few people visiting the beach in front of the home. The water is very quiet there, ideal for a family with small children. Our teenagers enjoyed snorkeling along the reef in front of the home and taking a paddle board lesson at the nearby Mauna Lani. The nearby beaches (Beach 69, Hapuna Beach, beach at the Mauna Kea) were fun to visit. We enjoyed walking for 60-90 minutes each morning, either along the beautiful properties and gardens on Puako Beach Drive or venturing out on the Ala Kahakai Trail to Beach 69 and Hapuna Beach. We enjoyed wonderful meals in Kawaihae (Blue Dragon, Cafe Pesto), Waimea (Daniel Thiebaut), and Kona (Huggo's). We hope to be back and highly recommend this home and working with Mary in particular.

Our two week stay here was wonderful! This was our third trip to Puako and we would rent this lovely home again. It was very clean and well kept. The photos don't due it justice. We spent a lot of time in the water diving and snorkeling to the reef. The area to the right of the house has some beautiful coral formations and an abundance of sealife. The property manager Mary who greeted us upon our arrival, was very helpful with any questions we had. She had groceries delivered so we would have something for the am as we arrived late. Restaurants, dive shop, farmers market and grocery store an easy drive. We hope to be back next year!

We LOVE coming to our paradise retreat at Whales Tales! We have visited many times over the years and this year we have stayed there for over 40 days! The home is equipped with every appliance and utility you would have in your own home. We get up and brew our Kona coffee, sit on the porch and watch this beautiful cove and the sea life. To the right sits 2-4 sailboats anchored in this small harbor and it is a very private place. We swim right in front of this home and it is most peaceful and rarely any current and there is a great reef in front and throughout the day we see the heads of turtles pop up to make their way onto the rocks to sunbathe. We tend to cook our meals as the market is maybe 10 houses down the street and a Foodland all of 5 minute drive away. If we do seek a nice meal out, their are 1/2 dozen choices within 10 minutes and 3 class hotels. The house is immaculate and we can't wait for our next visit!
