Forest and Surf Villa is a 4,000 square foot home designed by renowned architect Matthew Falkiner of Simplemente Madera. Experience peaceful treetop living in eco-luxury with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Sounds of the waves from three nearby beaches can be heard from the bedrooms and living spaces, harmonizing with sounds from birds and howler monkeys.
The heart of the house is the main level. You enter through the large deck among the trees and raised high above the forest floor. Sliding doors open into the open plan dining area and kitchen. The hallways are columned with beautiful pieces of eucalyptus hardwood and lead into the main sala or living room and another viewing deck.
The house has two master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, his and hers sinks. A third bedroom also with an ensuite bathroom is located with its own entrance at the lower level of the house with its own deck. An additional fourth bedroom is located on the upper level
The house has wi-fi through-out. Located on the lower level is the laundry room equipped with washer and dryer - very handy during the green season. The house is also equipped with back-up power powered by batteries, so can continue a tranquil holiday without noise from generators - a must in Nicaragua.
Forest and Surf Villa is part of the Balcones de Majagual, a gated community.Parking is available with security 24 hour security. Your security man is also equipped with a two way radio that links him to the property supervisor should you have any questions about the house, the town or if you need assistance with additional services. Maid service is available at no extra cost.
One friend marvels at "the house with no windows". I say "what do you mean no windows? It is one massive window". See for yourself. Another friend can't wrap her head around how we seem to be living outside yet when it rains, we stay dry. Alternative lifestyle, open to adventurous minds. We love being 15 minutes from the pretty little town of San Juan yet still far away from it all, nestled in this forest home sharing the space with the local wildlife. We enjoy the ocean and beach from three different beaches - Majagual, Playones and Maderas.
Getting Here and Getting Around...
The houses in Balcones de Majagual are accessible only by 4x4 vehicle. You can arrange transportation with iskratravel who can pick you up from the airport and transfer you on a 4x4 from San Juan del Sur to the house. Iskra Travel can arrange airport pick-up for up to 5 people from Managua airport straight to Forest and Surf Villa. You can also arrange a stop-over at PALI convenience store in San Juan del Sur town so you can stock up on groceries and amenities.
Dollar rent-a-car and Budget rent-a-car are reliable car rental services in Nicaragua. If you are coming from the Costa Rican border of Peñas Blancas, it is a mere 30kilometer trip into San Juan del Sur and a taxi should only cost $20
Nearby Town and Beaches...
15 minutes north of the town of San Juan del Sur, close enough to drive down to shop for a few amenities, chat with the local surfers or go to a restaurant or bar for some live music and eats but far enough to retreat from all that hustle and bustle.
If however, you and your friends are here for a surfing adventure, you will be glad to know that you can stash your boards on your truck or ATV and drive down from the house to Playa Playones in 3 minutes. Park the car and walk 5 minutes south to Playa Maderas. The owner of Forest and Surf Villa likes to walk to Maderas with his board from the house, taking him about 20 minutes. Playa Remanso, breaks on sand, excellent for beginners is about a 35 minute drive. Playa Yankee and other surfing beaches are a bit further off.

Wonderful house, wonderful surroundings. Note, though, the house is a solid 30 min ride from town via tough dirt roads. Would certainly recommend this house. It was a wonderful retreat. And, the trip to town isn't a big deal if you're planning to spend alot of time at the house and/or at Playa Maderas.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We loved our stay at the Forest and Surf Villa. The house is an architectural gem - very open, beautiful wood, gorgeous views of the ocean. We spent most of our time on the porch swing. We traveled with an infant (5.5 months), toddler (2.5 years) and four adults (including two seniors) and it all went so well. A gorgeous, quiet beach is a short drive from the villa. We heard lots of monkeys, but they were never a nuisance. The beds are comfy, there is a washer and dryer and the place comes with two surf boards and yoga mats. It also stays fairly cool there - compared to the beach. We were never bothered by mosquitoes. Things to know: the drive down to Sjds is long-ish and bumpy, so get supplies in advance. It is very helpful to bring a flash light or headlamp for when you get back after dark, although the paths to the villa are well lit. We didn't have hot water or wireless for the first two days, but it was then fixed (probably would have been fixed sooner, but it was Christmas). The lighting in the kitchen is unpleasant and the kitchen needs more glasses and bowls and a big cutting board. These are all small things, though - we loved our time there.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The photos cannot capture what a lovely home this is. Beautifully designed, amazing view and tremendously peaceful. With no windows the air is perfect and breezes relaxing. My girlfriend and I spent a week here and it was perfect for us, and would be ideal for a larger group as well. Well worth the bumpy dirt road ride from town. We cooked breakfast and dinner here daily (including fish we caught) as both of us have worked in restaurants for years (me on the wine side) and I have a food blog. Plenty of utensils, pots, pans etc. We do recommend making a trip to the street markets in Rivas for your produce...better quality and better variety (and less expensive). We surfed (and stood among huge Manta rays) at Playa Maderas, lazed on the beach at Playa Majaguel, helped baby turtles to the sea at La Flor, went night fishing catching 40 red snapper. Wonderful time. Thank youDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

"Serenity" Driving up to the house, you realize, you really are going to be staying "away from it all". Close enough to San Juan del Sur, that you can take a day trip to the beaches and restaurants if you feel the need, the three and a half bedrooms, open living space and deck really give you enough space to make yourself at home. My friends and I had a great time just lazing around, reading books and slipping into the pool now and again. I think we used the kitchen space the most... meals and cocktails... bring a blender :)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

"amazing" The home is perfectly balanced giving both a nature setting with easy access to shopping, beaches, and more. With an amazing view of the beach and in night you feel as though you are sleeping under the stars do to the design or this spectacular house. The owner was helpful in every way offering assistance with anything we needed. The caretaker of this property was one of the nicest person I have ever met. He was always available and assisted us several times. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a safe pleasant place to vacation. "A beautiful getaway from the ordinary day-to-day living" Everything you need is provided in a beautiful scenic setting. Comfortable and clean accommodations. A pleasant walk will lead you to the ocean. A short drive will take you into town. A little more of a drive can take you to one of the must-see volcanoes of Nicaragua! I highly recommend Forest and Surf Villa.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: Glen and Sunshine Ross owners. Happy to help you explore Nicaragua, a different world
Why the Owner Chose San Juan Del Sur:
My husband is English and would like to escape the sun. I am from the Philippines and would like to escape the crowd. Costa Rica was our first choice but budget did not fit. We discovered Nicaragua, a unique architectural show home, signed the deed and loaded up a container of things.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
One friend marvels at "the house with no windows". I say "what do you mean no windows? It is one massive window". See for yourself. Another friend can't wrap her head around how we seem to be living outside yet when it rains, we stay dry. Alternative lifestyle, open to adventurous minds. We love being 15 minutes from the pretty little town of San Juan yet still far away from it all, nestled in this forest home sharing the space with the local wildlife. We enjoy the ocean and beach from three different beaches - Majagual, Playones and Maderas.
