This mountain gives the province its name. The Imbabura is 4,610m high and can be hiked up to the rocky peak. The indigenous call him "Taita Imbabura", meaning grandfather Imbabura. As the ancient legends say, he is married to the closeby volcano "Mama Cotacachi".
The Cotacachi is 4,939m high and snowcapped during most of the year. He gives name to the village at his foot, where fine leather articles are manufactured. His triangle shaped peak is easy to recognize. "Mama Cotacachi", as the indigenous say, is the spouse of "Taita Imbabura".
The Cusin is the smallest one of our 4Volcanoes with just 4,012m, but probably one of the oldest ones in this part of the Andes. His peak is easily reached by foot and there is a spectacular horseback riding tour up to his peak.
The most renowned hacienda of Ecuador and home to the presidential Plaza family. This is were we lived and worked for some years. Hacienda Zuleta has a private Condor rescue station and breeds great andalusian horses.
We named the house 4 Volcanoes Villa, due to its unique setting. Located at 9,000ft in the northern Andes of Ecuador and within a 5 minute walk from the main plaza of the rural village of San Pablo del Lago, we are surrounded by 4 majestic peaks of (extinct) volcanoes: Imbabura, Cusin, snowcapped Cotacachi and the Mojanda rim.
It is just a 1,5 hour drive from Quito international airport, and yet another world. Indigenous walk their cows and sheep to the grazing field every morning. The land is worked the old fashioned way and fresh mountain air clears your senses.
We have renowned hotels with an excellent restaurant offer within a 10 minute drive and some of Ecuador´s major tourist attractions such as famous Otavalo market or Cuicocha crater lagoon are just 30 minutes away.
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: We are a family from Germany and live permanently in Ecuador since 2002.
With our own Lodge and the Equine therapy facility next door we live our dream close to nature, with cultural experiences and of course sunshine all year round! Our three boys are born in this wonderful country and homeschooled - we truly love our way of life here. As former bussiness consultants and managers of the award winning Hacienda Zuleta Hotel, we know the hospitality industry quite well - take advantage of our contacts and insights!
We also spend our time teaching at the university, coaching alternative schools, learning about shamanism, and volunteering at a local orphanage. We are happy to share, and looking forward to meeting you!
Why the Owner Chose Otavalo: San Pablo is an authentic village in a quiet rural setting, only 50 miles from the capital Quito and with endless activities within 1 hour driving around the house. The climate is perfect - Sunshine on 350 days of the year!
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: The area is perfect for outdoor activities, shopping, there are restaurants close by and the cultural experience offered is amazing.
A perfect day: get up with the first rays of sun and hike up the Imbabura volcano. Come back, have a late breakfast on the terrace. Watch the horses in training. Later a trip to Otavalo, some crafts shopping, visit a cultural event or just watch the people at the plaza. Grab some fruit at the market and head for early dinner towards the lake, for a beautiful dining experience with sunset view at the shore. When home, the hot tub is boiling and you can count the stars of both hemisperes. Tomorrow you can do a trail ride and have tea time at a colonial hacienda. And change your flights - stay a week longer!
