This cabin, built in 1906, the second in the Mt. Hermon community, is nestled amongst giant Redwoods hundreds of years old, with a lovely brook running just below the cabin. Five minute walk to Mt. Hermon Auditorium..
This is most often described as an extraordinarily serene setting. Peaceful. Quiet. Romantic. Crisp, clean air and blue sky. Guests often come to this getaway to write, catch up on some reading in front of the wood burning stove, or just experience a time of reflection. Great hiking trails are literally outside your front door. This place is a photographer’s dream location.
Others are drawn to the many opportunities available nearby : World Class golf courses such as Pasatiempo (10 minutes away) designed by Alister Mackenzie who designed Augusta National, site of the Masters or Pebble Beach and Spyglass less than an hour away in Carmel; the Monterey Bay Aquarium; fabulous beaches in Capitola and Santa Cruz (15 minutes); Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an oceanfront amusement park; best shopping in the Bay area at Stevens Creek and Santana Row in San Jose (45 minutes);many antique stores in Capitola, Aptos, Felton, and Los Gatos; wonderful restaurants throughout the area. Plus all of the excitement of San Francisco is just 90 minutes away!
An absolutely 'don't miss' experience is walking the 3 mile oceanside Walkway (sidewalk) along the Santa Cruz Beach. To better envision this experience, we suggest you google 'Santa Cruz beach walkway '.
You will find this rustic cabin to be in excellent condition and beautifully furnished. The first floor has: a small kitchen with a table and chairs overlooking the wooded forest; an inviting living room with two couches and other seating facing the wood burning stove; one bedroom with a brass queen bed (regular) with French Doors opening to the living room and the wood burning stove; and another queen bed (comfy 12' mattress) with a TV set. The lower level includes: a king bed (12' mattress) and an ante room with several sleeping pads plus an up and down bunk bed for children or smaller size adults. Each bedroom has its own tiny bathroom with shower. These showers are definitely one person showers! Lots of antique furniture. Plenty of books.
There are decks completely surrounding the cabin as well as outside the KIng Bedroom on the lower level. All with spectacular views.
This cabin, having been built over 100 years ago is single wall construction, except downstairs which was built in the 1970s. This means there is no insulation except the lower floor. There is no central heating. Since it is cold during the winter months, you will need a sweater inside and you will want to keep the fire going as well as the portable electric heaters in each bedroom. At night, you may want the wood burning stove going all night or use a heated blanket.
We welcome you to a wonderful experience in this very special place on God's earth.

We had a wonderful stay with family from Southeast Asia. Altogether there were nine of us, including two small children and a one year old boy toddler. The view was spectacular. My family enjoyed the hikes just around the cabin. The cabin was in great condition. The kitchen was great for us with a nice modern stove. We enjoyed eating out on the deck being close to nature and the marvellous view. The beds were comfortable. The owner was very hospitable and always ready to do anything to make our stay comfortable. My extended family is used to a tropical climate, so the amazing wood burning stove, heating blankets, electric heaters were a great addition. It was a truly memorable stay for us. Grocery store and restaurants close by. In the cabin, there were a great selection of books and games which we enjoyed.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

This cabin is in a beautiful location and was perfect for the seven of us. We stayed there immediately following our son's high school graduation. There were three 16 year old girls, and they all slept in the downstairs bedroom with their own private bathroom. Upstairs, my husband and I slept in one room, and our 24 year old daughter slept in the other. Our son slept on one of the sleeping mats in front of the wood burning stove. The cabin was clean, cozy, and had lots of character. The kitchen is small, but I prepared a hearty breakfast every morning, and there's plenty of seating outside on the wrap around deck. Our family really enjoyed out stay at The Schmidt Family Cabin. We will definitely return again. By the way, the caretaker was extremely nice and helpful, and gives excellent directions.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We stayed at this cabin summer of 2010 and it was fabulous. The beautifully built decks overlook the stream below and majestic redwood trees provide a gorgeous view. You can hike for hours, you can get to the beach in 20 minutes, you can sit under trees and read books while listening to the trickling stream below. We have already booked for next summer because it was perfect for our family. Every room has it's own bathroom and we had plenty of space for our family of 5!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
We wanted a complete getaway from the hectic life of Southern California. We could have purchased a vacation home any place in the world. We chose this because we wanted the privacy, beauty, and serenity it offers. And, because we are avid golfers, we appreciate the fabulous golf courses in the area. And, it is always a thrill to do the three mile walk along the Santa Cruz coastline.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We just like being there. Hanging out on the deck or in front of the wood burning stove with a good book or close friends.
