This location provided nearly everything that we search for in a vacation home. The pictures posted on the owners site were accurate. There was also a small beach area suited for dogs to retrieve toys or kids to splash around in the shallows. The pier was very sturdy. The property was very well kept up and the owners made themselves readily available for any concerns during the stay. We'd highly recommend this property if you are looking for a relaxing experience. You could see other houses nearby if you were standing on the pier, but you couldn"t see any houses if you sat on the deck or spent time on the huge lawn between the house and the lake. There was a heavily wooded and spacious divide between the houses. The road to the property was blacktop and served as an easy walking nature trail. The area was packed with deer. We also saw elk in Clam Lake. It took about 15 minutes to drive the boat over to the cabin from the public landing. You have to drive past the landing to get back onto the highway anyhow, so it wasn't out of the way for lake hopping. We went swimming on the south side of the island just to the left of the property. It was pure sand. Our kayaks worked well for exploring the state owned islands on Teal Lake. We also docked our boat on the islands .As for places to eat, The Spider Lake Cafe served excellent breakfast, as did The Robin"s Nest. Famous Dave"s would be a good pick for supper. If you go to Clam Lake to look for elk, The Chippewa Inn, right in town, serves quality food. If you bring your dog, you really do need to take it to heart that there is a lot of deer traffic in the yard. There were several flyers in the area about lost dogs that took off after deer. Other wildlife that we saw were racoons, loons, bald eagles, osprey, golden eagles, and ducks. Fishing was good right from the pier. Most boaters went slow by the shore but others were going fast in the more open waters. We never found any of them to be obnoxious. Overall, it was very peaceful. It took us about 25 minutes to get to the cabin once off the main highway, so plan ahead. The drive is beautiful as well as slow and winding, plus the deer are everywhere. There is a store leading up to the cabin called the Happy Hooker which carries everything to tide you over, including beer and video rentals plus bait and gas. There are forest roads close by to explore. Bring a hat to keep the deerflies off your head when you go for walks. They really weren't bad, but go prepared.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. You definitely seemed to get the full experience. It sounds like you had some good fishing from the pier too. Its been a little touch and go for the past season. We have caught muskie's off that pier too. The Happy Hooker has been there for as long as I can remember, the only downfall is the increase in gas price because its the only gas station for about 30-40 miles. But they do have everything else. We hope to see you again sometime.
