My wife and I spent 12 nights at the Birdsong Cottage. Very comfortable house and quiet location. We both felt a spiritual connection with the owner and the area. 10 minutes driving gets you to the ocean, the warm pond, Kalani yoga classes, Wed night at Uncle Roberts with great food and local music. More local vibes and less tourist trappings. It's is one area we will return to.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

The home is brand new and very very nice. Clean quiet ( only noise is breeze , songbirds , tree frogs ) Owners live right by if you need anything at all and are super nice. The Puna district is the place to be for the true Hawaii.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.

Our one-week stay in April truly felt like a week spent in paradise, thanks to the exceptional accommodation and its engaging owners. Bird Song Cottage exceeded our expectations and is very fairly priced. Both Mike and Susan were quick to respond to requests or questions, eager to make sure we were fully satisfied. Mike took over the chopping open of a coconut for me, suffering only a flesh wound where I would likely have lost a limb. Susan is a gifted glass artist; my wife was delighted to purchase a few of her pieces that are now in daily use. It is a short drive to the interesting town of Pahoa, and a similar distance to tidal pools on the southeast shore (ask for shortcut directions unless you have a detailed local map).We found excellent gluten-free Thai food throughout the Big Island, including at Ning's in Pahoa (try the coconut soup). For groceries, we enjoyed shopping at Island Naturals stores throughout the island, including one in Pahoa. We had originally hoped to be within short walking distance of the town, but Bird Song Cottage was such a delight that we would not think of staying anywhere else on a future visit. And yes, there is plenty of bird song. Keep the bird feeder filled on the lanai, and watch the cardinals and Java sparrows as they compete for food.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing.

Thorougly enjoyable. We were off on a new journey every day and came home to a place of comfort. It was quiet, clean and comfortable. We would grill fish most nights and enjoy dinner talking about the day. We also enjoyed listening to the birds as they gathered at the bird feeder each day.And the yard was tropical. Bird Song Cottage provided us with everything we needed, and we had great landlords! Susan and Michael gave us our space but were always available to answer our questions about where to go and what to do. Uncle Roberts Farmers Market starts at 5pm every Wednesday and is a MUST go! Your truly see local life and you enjoy! And Pahoa comes alive on Friday and Saturday night! Wow, everyone was there and happy! Mahalo, Susan and Michael; we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Bird Song Colttage is a special place!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Charlotte & Rex, Always warms our hearts to see ours guests enjoying the cottage, the Island and the richness it has to offer. So good to have met you both. Hope to see you two again!

Amazing!!! My husband and I absolutely adored the Bird Song Cottage and really enjoyed our stay in Pahoa. There's nothing not to like about this house and the location, and we hope to visit again. The house and the property sit on lush grounds and it's much more beautiful in person. The house is located in a very quiet neighborhood and we enjoyed listening to the sounds of nature at night (with the coqui tree frogs, the tropical rain, etc.). The house has everything you need for a perfect laid back and relaxing stay. The owners are so friendly and welcoming that you feel like you've known them forever. The house and warm accommodations from the owners really made this a wonderful vacation! This place was perfect!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, age 55+, sightseeing.

Beautiful home!! My husband and I enjoyed the home, the grounds, and the jungle around us was awesome! Our only regret was that the volcano had just quit flowing. Mike and Susan are very helpful, and great folks to know. Quite and handsome, far from the touristy flourishes that are common on the other islands. Beautiful home!!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, age 55+, sightseeing.

We had a delightful stay at the Bird Song Cottage. It is located in a rural area about 45 minutes to Hilo and about 15 to Pahao. It is 10 to 15 minutes to the beaches and the hot pools. It is easy to get to the Volcanos from here. The cottage is immaculate and very tasteful. The area is one of the better maintained and has a nice park and playground for children. But it is rural so don't expect phone service to be consistent. The WIFi is available but is not always strong. The Wet side of Hawaii is beautiful. It is tropical with waterfalls and nice hikes. The dry side is very dry and full of lava fields. I much preferred the Hilo side. Pahoa is a fun stop and offers what you will need. Kaleo's Restaurant is a must stop.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+, sightseeing.

My wife and I started visiting the Big Island back in 1994 and we are continually amazed by its ecological richness and diversity. We've stayed in little rentals all over the island but in the last few years we've chosen the district of Puna, and the Bird Song Cottage in particular, as our "base camp" of choice. For us, Puna offers the true feeling of old Hawaii with it's rich agricultural lands, lush tropical forests, and wild, non-manicured beaches (meaning "low tourist density"). After a day of exploration it's always a wonderful feeling to return to the Bird Song. As the photos attest, the cottage is tastefully appointed with comfortable furniture, and classically decorated in true Hawaiian style. Every room has a wonderful view of the surrounding forest which is abuzz with colorful birds and the hypnotic cooing of doves. The large covered deck is a great place to hang out and watch the birds as they zip from branch to bird feeder. For those who need their electronics the cottage has wireless internet, a great TV, and stereo compete Hawaiian music. The couch and chairs are super comfy and lighting options enumerable and romantic. The kitchen has all the amenities necessary for basic cooking or for putting together a culinary masterpiece. The beds in both the guest room and the the master bedroom are super (we've tried them both) and there are spacious closets and drawers for all your clothes and treasures. As if all this wasn't enough the hosts, Susan and Michael, are super friendly and helpful if you need them, and absent if you don't. Accommodations are typically one of the biggest expenses in Hawaii, but we've found the Bird Song Cottage to be one of least expensive places we've stayed. If you consider the beautiful location, wonderful hosts, and tastefully appointed cottage the Bird Song MUST be one of the best values on the Big Island. I highly recommend it!! Don't miss: snorkeling in the Kapoho tidepools, soaking at Ahalanui hot ponds, Lava Tree State Park, Kehena (clothing optional) beach, out-of-this-world disc golf at the ocean's edge in Mackenzie State Park, Ono-burgers an Kalapana, the Pahoa and the Maku'u markets and, of course, Pahoa Village. And these are just a few gems in the local area.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Aloha Kris & Kim, Thank you so much for your spectacular review. We're so happy you enjoyed the cottage and all this beautiful part of the island has to offer. We look forward to your next visit. With Biggest Aloha, Susan & Michael

This house is so comfortable whether you are inside or outside. And it is nice and close to the public hot pond for a daily morning soak. That king-sized bed is sooo comfy. The house is clean and tastefully decorated. Of course the birds at Bird Song are plentiful and entertaining. After staying here on 3 different occasions, now we not only look forward to the comfort of staying at Bird Song, we also look forward to seeing Mike and Susan.Owner response: Aloha Kathi & Winton, Thank you for the sweet review. We're very happy you enjoy your stay here at Bird Song and look forward to your next visit. Best Aloha, Susan & Michael
