La Cigogne is a restored charentais farmhouse , built around a central courtyard. The house is at the centre, the 'chais' to the left has been converted into a summer room. The built-in barbeque is adjacent to the 'chais'. The barn to the right is used as a store and not open for visitors. The private pool is on the other side of the 'chais', behind the house is a lawn and hedge. Our neighbours are mainly working farmers.
There are nearby ports on the Gironde, as well as several eleventh and twelfth century churches. Within easy reach are the towns of Blaye, Royan, and Rochefort, offering excellent markets and fine restaurants. Also easily accessible are the towns of Cognac and Bordeaux, as well as the areas of the Bordeaux Appellation Controlle to the south, and the famous vineyards of Medoc to the West. Atlantic beaches 40 minutes away offer surfing.
La Cigogne is three kilometers from the small village of St. Dizant du Gua in which you can find a little shop with fresh meat and dairy produce amongst other items. there is also a post office, bar, pottery shop, and small Chateau. General stores and bakeries are at nearby St. Fort, St. Ciers and St. Thomas. Mirambeau, which is located 14 kilometers away, offers an excellent supermarket as well as a good selection of shops and restaurants. Throughout the surrounding area there are regional produce outlets offering wine, cognac, pineau (local aperitif), oysters and fresh farm produce.
A sailing school has started up at Port Maubert, 15 minutes drive from La Cigogne. Here there is the option for novices, including children to learn to sail, and it is possible to go for day trips into the estuary. |
