Stevens Pass house description
A Riverside Retreat is vacation rental home located on the Skykomish River in the scenic town of Index, WA, only one hour from downtown Seattle, and 25 minutes from Stevens Pass. This area has recently been designated as the 'Wild Sky Wilderness Area.'
With only 150 residents, Index is the smallest town in western Washington, and it is blessed with amazing views of jagged snow capped mountains, huge granite cliffs, a crystal clear mountain river that runs right through town, and an awesome rain forest right out of the movie 'Twilight.'
This just-remodeled 2 bedroom home sleeps 4 in absolute comfort with new World-Class Simmons Beautyrest Pillow Top mattresses and luxury linens. In addition to the bedrooms we have just received (Oct 2013) our queen size American Leather Comfort Sleeper - a $5,000 platform bed with a tempurpedic-style memory foam mattress that doubles as a sofa. So, we can now accommodate up to 6 guest in luxury bedding.
Fully equipped to satisfy all of your needs, our vacation home includes a hot tub, high speed wireless Internet, plenty of entertainment options (see below), a full-size washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen, outdoor gas grill with rotisserie, and much more. We even include complimentary coffee, popcorn, and long distance calling. What are you waiting for? Contact us now to reserve your perfect dates!
Located right along the Skykomish river at the west end of town on a giant 5 lot property, you'll enjoy the 'best view in town' right from your covered front porch or cozy leather coach and overstuffed reading chairs. This is not your typical 'funky' cabin in the forest, but a newly remodeled, tastefully decorated retreat - at an incredible value. Think 'Calvin Klein beach house' but in the mountains with a touch of mid century modern. Warm, inviting, and perfect for a weekend getaway for a couple, two couples, or a small family.
Remodeled in 2010, you'll find all the comforts of home including high-speed wireless Internet, a 50' plasma TV, HD cable, Blue Ray DVD player, Wii Video Console, Bose Wave Radio with MP3/iPod connection, a dozen board games, and an open floor plan with new hardwood floors throughout.
Though the house is brimming with entertainment options, it's also an amazing place to just relax and do nothing but watch the river go by. With resident bald eagles soaring overhead, the mountain river rushing by, the amazing fresh air purified by the surrounding forest, the hot tub to warm your bones, the spring fed water right out of the tap - you won't find a better place to rejuvenate your body and mind.
Index and the surrounding area is a sporting paradise with excellent access to hiking, biking, kayaking, river rafting, fishing, skiing (cross country and downhill), ATV riding, horseback riding and more. In the winter months, nearby Stevens Pass is a big draw as one of the top skiing destinations in the Pacific Northwest. In the summer, the wild Skykomish River is the star of the show offering adrenaline filled whitewater challenges, or a lazy float on a hot summer day. The Skykomish is also widely know for it's excellent fishing with the top draw being the world renowned Steelhead. Known as the fish of a thousand casts, they can be extremely challenging to hook and even more so to land - but when you do, you'll have accomplished a major fishing milestone of which you can be very proud.
Things to see in town:
The town of Index is very small and you can walk the entire town (every street!) in under an hour. Along the way you'll find lots of things to see. In the center of town as you cross the bridge, you'll find the index General Store which has been serving Index residents for longer than anyone can remember. Inside the store, you'll find a very old-school post office.
Across from the store is the Outdoor Adventure Center which is a rafting and kayaking outfitter where you can rent equipment, take lessons, and join a whitewater trip. Their headquarters, the River House, doubles as a coffee lounge offering hand crafted coffee drinks, fresh baked goods, Internet access and good information on what's happening in town.
Also in the center of town is Doolittle park, named after one of the pioneers of the area. The park offers a covered picnic area as well as a tennis court, basketball court and public restrooms. On display is a giant saw blade that was used to cut granite at the local quarry. The granite steps of the Washington state capitol building were cut right here in Index.
To learn more about how Index came to be, be sure to visit PIckett's Museum where you can see amazing photographs and artifacts of an era gone by. You'll be shocked to learn the Index once had 2000 residents when it boomed, and you can see photographs of the giant trees that were harvested from the area.
As of 2012, the historic Bush House has finally been purchased and is undergoing restoration that will hopefully match it's former glory offering small hotel rooms with shared bathrooms and a much anticipated re-opening of the restaurant. Be sure to stop in for a meal or at least dessert and coffee. Expected to open in 2014.
Across from the Bush House is the Index Elementary school where local students of 6 grades share 2 classrooms. With one of the best student-teacher-ratio's in the state, the school is an excellent place for kids.
In 2008 the huge ridge across the river from town was saved from logging by a local effort known as 'Friends of Heybrook Ridge.' The organization raised enough money to purchase the land from a private company and have plans to make the ridge an eco-tourist and educational destination. Plans include a parking lot and various hiking trails with educational signage. This will be an excellent addition to the town of Index and allow people of all ages to easily access a 100-year-old 2nd growth rain forest and learn about the flora and fauna. To see how you can get involved you can visit their website at http://www.heybrookridge.org
When you stay with us, you will have no limit to the number of amazing hikes in the area. For starters, you can view this website. Be sure to zoom in around Index and you'll see all the green circles pop up indicating local hikes: http://www.trails.com/activity.aspx?area=11836
Depending on the weather, a very popular day trip for visitors is to cross Stevens pass into the eastern side of the state where you'll find yourself in the German styled town of Leavenworth. The streets are lined with tourist-attracting shops and there are several good restaurants to try. One of our favorites is Gustav's at the west end of town offering fantastic bratwurst and cold beer. Try the outdoor deck upstairs when the weather is nice - a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Heading the other direction, Seattle is only an hour away. Check out Pike Place outdoor market where you can grab coffee at the very first Starbucks, watch the fish mongers throw fish, and shop for fresh produce and hand made crafts. It's open every day of the year rain or shine! Or take a ride up the space needle where you can see the whole city, or journey off on a ferry ride to picturesque Bainbridge Island for lunch. There is certainly plenty to do in the Emerald City if you get the itch for city life during your stay. And at only an hour away, getting there and back is half the fun.

I have been here too many times to count. I just keep coming back. This is hands down the best place to stay if you love the outdoors. The Skykomish river is literally in the front yard. There are tons of hiking trails nearby. Stevens Pass is a few minutes away. From the front porch Mount Index is breathtaking, especially when covered in snow. The hammock and fire pit are perfect in the summer, as are snowball fights and the hot tub in the winter. For those who aren't into the outdoors, there's a huge tv with cable and tons of movies, a wii, and non-electronic games too. The house is great for groups, couples, or solo. Speaking of couples, I always thought winter would be my favorite time to visit, but that all changed this summer. I got engaged during my most recent visit to A Riverside Retreat. I couldn't imagine a more appropriate place for this to have taken place. It's a moment I will never forget. The setting is perfect, no matter what you're looking for. After your first visit to A Riverside Retreat, you won't be able to stay away either.

Good place to have a vacation
Good place to have a vacation
The house was clean and rooms are fine. One thing I disappointed was that there was food garbage in trash can in the kitchen (the owner said it would be a mistake of housekeeper). Even though it was slightly rainy it was good. Since we had babies, we couldn't enjoy many activities. But we totally enjoyed the house. There was a guitar my son loved, Wii I loved, and hot tub my kids liked. There is a market in walking distance.

Owner response: Thanks for the business and the feedback Hyunsoo. So glad to hear that your family had a great time and you found plenty to do in the house. We've equipped it with the guitar and board games and movies and cable tv and wi-fi and video games and magazines and books to give everyone something to do. On the small food pail - when we brought this up with the housekeeper she was mortified as her standards are extremely high. You commented on how clean the place was so you saw that for yourself. We have a compost pile out back as an option for people who like to separate their food waste from the other garbage. This small pail has a lid on it with a charcoal filter so that there is no smell. While it's usually scrubbed clean, it was missed on this occasion. Hopefully you can overlook that detail and stay with us again sometime! Molly and Ken
Amazing vacation spot
Amazing vacation spot
Clean, well appointed, stylish, good price, with great views in a great location. The owners were kind, helpful, and quick to respond to emails and inquiries. It's better than the pictures! This was the perfect home base for me and my husband's hiking vacation, probably the best trip we've ever taken. It also would make a great artist's retreat. With plenty of plein air scenes right off the front porch, I'm glad I had my traveling watercolor kit! A whole laundry lists of gorgeous hikes are easily accessible from Rt 2; Lake Serene, Necklace Valley Lakes on the Foss River, Alpine Lookout via Meritt Lake, falls at Wallace State park just to name the few we tried. wta.org had a bunch more. After your outdoor activities in the unparalleled beauty of the cascades, you can come home to soak in the hot tub, relax on the porch and watch the sun play on the incredible mountains that surround you, curl up on the plush couches with a good book, make delicious dinner in a kitchen with all the essentials (including sharp knives, something you don't always find at rentals!). At the end of the day you can collapse on an incredibly soft bed, pop in your earplugs (thoughtfully provided!), and sleep like a rock. The only down side was I didn't want to leave!

Owner response: Ruth - thank you for the hikers review, and we're so glad you found the place enjoyable. You're exactly right that we have some world class hikes within minutes of the cabin. Hopefully you felt our book outlining them was helpful. We're currently staying here ourselves and you're right about the knives - my bandgaged thumb is testament to that! You're welcome back anytime. Ken and Molly
Had a great time!
Had a great time!
We really enjoyed our stay at the RR and had a lot of fun in Index as well! The weather was perfect, the rafting place down the street was having a July 4th weekend beer festival and the house was exactly what we were looking for. And mein gott, that king bed was soooo comfortable... Our only regret was not having more days to enjoy everything more.

Amazing Views, Peaceful Location
Amazing Views, Peaceful Location
We loved staying at the house. The views right out the front door were breathtaking. The town of Index was unique and inviting. All of the local residents were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed hanging out at the house watching TV and movies. We did one of the suggested hikes that was close by which provided more amazing views, plus a good cardio workout! The house had everything we needed, including an old air popper for popcorn, which brought back childhood memories of making popcorn with my family. Thanks for providing a wonderful get away at a reasonable price. We look forward to returning some day!

Great Weekend Get Away!
Great Weekend Get Away!
Coming from the Eastside this was a great quick get away...only an hour from home...yet truly another world. For us the pluses of our stay were: Loved the location, we saw kyakers, lots of birds and the search and rescue team gave us quite the show during their 4 hour class in which they practiced their river safety and rescue techniques. Living-room/dinning-room furniture was very comfortable, the throw blankets a very nice touch The TV and Internet worked great and are such a nice bonus when traveling and need to check in or if it happens to be the last weekend of someones Fantasy Baseball Draft and they need to make their last picks.... :) There were movies to watch with books and magazines as well.. The king size bed was super comfy and the bedding wonderful Bathroom towels were nicely over-sized and thick, shower worked great and has wonderful water pressure Having a washer/dryer is a really nice benefit, especially for longer stays. Kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans, dishes and glassware. Nice to have some oils and spices available (we always bring our own just in case) Also loved that plastic wrap/foil and baggies were there (always bring our own just in case except this time it just slipped my mind so thank you for having that available) Did not use the bikes/ outdoor fireplace or BBQ but in the spring/summer would totally use and is a great added feature. We loved sitting on the front porch Friday night having a cocktail and watching the river and waving to your very nice townspeople. We loved the white lights around the porch as well. And finally not having a cleaning fee is fantastic...We always treat the homes we stay at as if they were our own and never leave a mess, so that truly was a great bonus! So again thank you for a wonderful experience and weekend at your truly lovely home in Index... I know we will return and maybe invite another couple to join us next time but then again maybe not as we might just like to keep it a secret for us....

We had an amazing time in Index! Ken was very accomodating and prompt in getting back to me! I really appreciated that! The house was clean and represented well in the pictures and the king bed was comfy! The views were awesome! The area is beautiful! We walked along the river and watched as a very brave soul rock climbed! We didn't want to leave! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home! We plan on returning!

Best Vacation Rental!
Best Vacation Rental!
The video says it all and delivers everything it says it has AND MORE. Ken is so accommodating as a rental owner. He called me personally to confirm my requested dates, answered any questions I had from where to buy groceries to purchasing lift tickets. He even blew up inner tubes for my boys to use in the snow! The home is probably the best-looking on the street, very well maintained, remodeled very nicely and so cozy! The house was super clean, everything was in perfect working order and the kitchen was stocked with anything I could possibly need. As a family of 5 with 3 young boys, I had what I needed to cook, do laundry and keep them entertained. We were thrilled to find a "home away from home" so that we could get my boys to skiing quickly and several days in a row. In only 25-30 min. you can get up to Stevens Pass for lessons or skiing and return home quickly for a shower and warm meal---a must with young children. The area is quiet with the most amazing views! There are places to eat out, get gas etc. but we were happy to bring in our groceries from Monroe and spend our free time walking the neighborhood along the river and skiing. We are looking forward to returning very soon for another ski trip or during the summer months to explore rafting, hiking and fishing! Hot tub, FREE internet, cable and phone, NO cleaning fee and NO outrageous deposit made this a spectacular deal for our family. I looked at other rentals in Snoqualmie that were too big and WAY over-priced. It's nice to see an honest couple willing to share their beautiful home for a reasonable price. If you are thinking about staying here, book it now! I am recommending this rental to everyone I know! You will not be disappointed. We were sad to leave!

Owner response: Coming from Hawaii, these guests had a few more questions than our normal family but we were happy to answer them and make sure the kids first experience with snow was a good one. Actually, the phone was disconnected during their stay due to an automated payment gone awry - but they never complained, and we were able to get it reconnected in short order. We'd welcome back Celeste and her family any time! Aloha.
The Perfect Getaway!!
The Perfect Getaway!!
After all the holiday scrambling around Seattle I was looking forward to a short getaway from the city. Wanting to get some runs in at Stevens Pass but not looking forward to the drive time that weekend, we decided to stay Friday and Saturday night at the Riverside Retreat and definitely are glad we did. An hour drive out of Seattle and 30 minutes before Stevens Pass Ski Area, the Retreat was perfect for me, my wife, and our two young children, 3 and 6 years old. We got into Index to about 3 inches of snow and freezing temperatures but the clean and well maintained house warmed up well and there were plenty of clean throw blankets to welcome us along with several other nice touches that made it feel like home within a few minutes. We relaxed with a movie before bed then woke up for a full breakfast well ahead of the Stevens Pass rush from Seattle. We took our time at the table and just watched and listened to Bald Eagles from the large picture window from inside the house. The views of Mt. Index and Persus that morning from inside and in front of the house in the early morning were jaw dropping!! Returning from the mountain, we all got into the hot tub and spent some time going from the corner view of Mt. Index, to watching Bald Eagles fly only feet above the house, to gawking at the sheer 1,000 ft of the Index Town Wall directly behind the house. A short stroll along the river across the street with the kids, a great dinner with more Eagle watching, and a very relaxing night's sleep finished out our day. While I can't say enough positives about the entire experience, readers will want to be aware of a few minor details that are less than perfect. The Hot Tub was so new that it didn't yet have a proper cover on it so that was a bit of a pain that I'm certain is now well taken care of. The Riverside Retreat is more of a house on the outskirts of a very small town (population of ~180) vs. a "cabin in the woods" so there are neighbors on two sides with no fences. The open lot is huge though and the tradeoff of such amazing views is well worth it. The only other item of note is that the BNSF railroad is heavily used and runs up the entire Skykomish River valley so occasional trains within view are a certainty but our kids loved them and they never really bothered Liz or I at all. All in all, the Riverside Retreat was a spectacular time for me and my family and we'll definitely be back!

Owner response: Thanks for the kind words John, and it was a pleasure to have you as a return guest from last year! So glad you got to enjoy a snowfall - they are simply magical. Good news: The hot tub cover is now installed - an inflatable cover that is simple to take on and off unlike those big heavy ones that eventually get waterlogged. The "2-3 weeks" promise on the custom cover somehow became 10 weeks(!) when they had a part back ordered - grrrrr! While there is a house on the upriver side of our home, it's vacant and only occasionally used during the summer by the family that has owned it for about 40 years. The only other home within a stone's throw is about 150' from the back of the house. While John is correct - this is not an isolated cabin in the woods, there is certainly plenty of space to stretch out (we have 5 city lots) and ample privacy.

About the owner: Greetings, We are Molly, Ken and Max. We love to travel including backpacking around the world in 2007, and touring America in 2010 for 6 months for our honeymoon after getting married in Index! Now we have our new son Max and are slowing down for a year or two. Right now we have located ourselves on the central coast of California and have decided to rent our home to people like YOU while we're gone. It seems like we just finished remodeling and haven't even had a chance to enjoy it much ourselves yet, so we hope you'll consider staying here, taking care of it for us, and enjoying this amazing area. If you want to do nothing - you've found the right place. If you want to do everything - you've found the right place. Please review our VRBO listing, or look for our website online for additional information. Regardless of where you stay, we hope you enjoy yourself!
Why the Owner Chose Stevens Pass:
Ken grew up in Index (and still has family here), and even though we've traveled around the world there are few places as beautiful. The amazing mountains, sheer cliffs, and powerful river are enough to mesmerize even the most jaded. Combine that with the variety of kiking, biking, kyaking, rafting, fishing, skiing to be had - you couldn't find a better place to relax, or seek adventure. The town of Index has only 150 people so it's pin drop quiet at night. All you will hear is the gentle rushing of the river (and an occasional train, though we don't even hear it anymore). This property is at the far end of town, built on 5 lots so there's a huge lawn to spread out on, and even the houses 'next door' are rarely occupied. You'll have all the peace and quiet you need. As Ken grew up he always marveled at the view from this home, and when it came up for sale we decided to grab it. Since we can't live here full time, but we still want to use it when we visit several times a year - making it a vacation rental was the perfect choice.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The view from our home is AMAZING. Every room in the house has a view of jagged mountains or sheer granite cliffs, and the front porch is especially magical. It's a great place for morning coffee watching the bald eagles, or a great place for cocktails on a summer night. Since we added a hot tub to the back porch, it may be a tie as to which will get more use. The other big advantage of this property is that is sits on 5 city lots - probably the biggest property in Index (though that's not saying a lot). And since our nearest neighbors only use their home for an occasional weekend in the summer we have a ton of privacy.
