San Isidro del General house description

The Unicorn lodge is nestled among ancient oaks along side the pristine Savegre River in the cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota. Our area is famous for its dense concentration of the Resplendent Quetzal which is sought after by bird watchers from all over the world. We have had breakfast on our front deck with these magnificent creatures several times. There are several high end eco-resorts in our magical valley, but we have the only fully equipped home available.

The lodge has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths, and an sleep 4-6 comfortably. The Savegre River is just off the front deck and was called 'the cleanest river in Central America' by National Geographic. We are located just 75 miles from the airport in San Jose or about a 2 hour drive

We had such an amazing stay at this quaint lodge in the cloud forest. The setting is incredible with a beautiful crystal clear river just in front of the home, and a cascading waterfall creek directly to the side. I don't think there are many places like this left on the planet that are not in National Parks. The lodge is comfortable with a beautiful floor to ceiling fireplace that knocks the chill out of the air on the cool nights. The days are absolutely perfect with temperatures around 75 degrees F. There are so many amazing birds around the place, and we saw the magnificent Quetzal on 3 separate occasions. There are some great restaurants in the area ranging from $3-4 dollars a meal, all the way up to $20 at the nice eco-lodges down the road. There is an amazing waterfall just above the property if you follow the creek trail for about half a mile. There are no mosquitoes at all, so I am assuming the previous review is in regard to another property, as we found out that no ants, mosquitoes, or snakes live at this high of an elevation. It is over 7500 feet up in the mountains. This is one place that everyone should add to their "bucket list" as it is probably the most beautiful place we have ever visited!

Recommended for: Pet owners, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

We spent five nights at this amazing house. Why anyone would want to descend from its serenity is still a question. We had the best view of the San Isidro valley that a place could offer, with the most spacious and inviting accommodations. Our party of four included a toddler (just 3 years) and a grandparent (68 years). We had come here after spending a few days in Manuel Antonio, in search of quieter pastures and a cooler climate. (That being said, Playa Dominical is only 50 minutes away.) Activities in the area to recommend: - Nauyaca waterfall (45 min) by horse. We did this with our toddler, and grandparent and had an amazing time. Baby sat with mother on one horse, under the constant care of one of the guides. Great food, coffee, and swimming. No riding experience necessary (we did not have any). Call ahead for reservations! - Playa Dominical - speaks for itself. A more off-the-beaten path beach. - Mount Chirripo area and San Gerardo de Rivas. We opted not to climb to the top, and instead chose to visit (sans baby) the Cloud Bridge preserve below the summit. Beautiful fauna, waterfalls and walks. Challenging climbs but doable for anyone wishing to spend a day piddling around the area. Places to eat with a view or just grab some good coffee. - Los Cusingos bird sanctuary - great little find. Reknown naturalist Dr. Alexander Skutch's home, now a private preserve for anyone wishing to spend 2-3 hours (or more) studying birds or just walking. We took our toddler and he walked back and forth to see the pictographs. The longest distance is just over 1 km, in one direction. The rest of the time we just enjoyed the peace and quiet that a mountain top can offer. An important caveat: in Costa Rica you really need a vehicle with four-wheel drive. Most of the places we mentioned above cannot be accessed (including the house itself) without it. We had a blast getting lost and exporing the rocky roads and getting access to life that just isnt available from the highway. Thanks to the owners for creating such a warm place. We had a great location, all possible amenities, and again a view beyond words.

Owner response: It was great to meet all of you, and so glad you enjoyed your stay. We particularly enjoyed you coming up for a day to our organic farm in the cloud forest, and taking such a geniune interest in our sustainable way of life. Hope to see you all back again one day.

Our family of 7 stayed at this beautiful property for the final 3 weeks of our nearly 3 month long visit to Costa Rica. We had already experienced San Jose and the beaches of Manuel Antonio. We were hoping to spend our remaining time in a quiet, non-touristy location...getting to know the locals while enjoying the comforts of home, like hot water and a full kitchen! We were not disappointed. Not only is the home lovely with the best view imaginable of the entire green valley, but the owners were so generous and helpful, and the neighbors (who are near enough to be helpful, but whose homes are separated from view by the hill and treeline) became friends. Ryan and Tammy met us and helped us get situated at the house, and the property was very clean and prepared for our arrival. The large windows all around the master bedroom allowed us to watch the sun rise and set from the bed (!) every single day. We became acquainted with the town of San Isidro, and also visited the local serpentarium to the west and the cloud forest to the north. The beach and waterfalls are also within an hour's drive. Great location for quiet getaway and for access to these other assets of Costa Rica. Our favorite part of the house is the balcony off the kitchen that gave us a place to read, sip wine, and watch the children run in the yard with their new friends. We had no complaints, aside from the mosquitos that got us when we left the windows open (with screens) at night...we learned to close the windows at nightfall and use a plug-in repellant. We wholeheartedly recommend this gorgeous property to families or small groups looking for a quiet little spot in paradise!

Owner response: What an amazing family. It was a pleasure to meet all of you, and now everytime we go back to the house the neighbors want to know when you are coming back!! You guys seemed to be the perfect fit for the place as you wanted the luxuries of home, but not locked away in some gated development. We all hope you will return soon. Pura vida
