The fig tree which gave the house it’s name: Casa Figueira, stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees and an olive tree. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

From the front courtyard a 70 meters private walkway brings the guests to a very quite cobblestone road. Walk this secure Parque da Praia narrow road for 200 meters (just a couple minutes) and you’ll arrive at the lovely large sandy beach. You can also leave the property via the garage entrance.
The living room is connected to the dining room and has a brand new fireplace that you are welcome to use. Two French doors open from the dining and living rooms to the covered terrace and private pool area. The front door opens to another covered terrace linked to a large courtyard with a pathway to a lush enclosed tropical garden.
There are 3 bedrooms in Casa Figueira: The master bedroom has a king size bed (180cm x 200cm), a large wardrobe and dresser as well as an antique desk. The master bedroom connects into a beautifully renovated private bathroom with a large two-person bathtub and Portuguese sink.

The blue bedroom has beautiful double and twin-size beds and a large build-in wardrobe. We can provide an extra crib, kid folding bed, or high-chair free of charge.
In addition to the bathroom in the master bedroom, two additional bathrooms are located in the hallway. One of them also has a large bathtub, the other a shower. With three bathrooms there is never a need to delay taking a refreshing shower or a relaxing lazy bath after a long day outside.
The living room has a tall fireplace, a large sofa and comfortable seats. There is satellite TV (100 channels) which can show several European and international channels. A DVD player with small DVD collection and a CD player and CD collection are available for your enjoyment. Our clients are welcome to use the phone for free local calls and of course for all incoming calls. In addition free wireless internet is available, but please bring your laptop to connect.
The dining room has a large table and connects via a pass-thru hole to the kitchen. The dining room also connects to a very cozy covered terrace where most of the meals can be held enjoying some shade at noon, or the sunset in the evening.
The kitchen has a stove, fridge and freezer. It is equipped with all the necessary items to have breakfast with tea or coffee, and to cook delicious lunches or dinners from fresh fruit, vegetables and fish obtained from the local markets.
On weekdays Amelia, our housekeeper of more then 20 years, provides exceptional daily housekeeping services in a friendly and non-intrusive way. Towels are changed twice/week and linen once a week. Amelia makes you feel welcome and immediately at home. Amelia speaks English and will be able to provide assistance as needed. A tip at the end of your stay is always appreciated. Thank you!
This villa is truly your 'home away from home' as one of our clients likes to call it. This was our fourth trip to the Algarve and thanks to Casa da Figueria, our best. My wife and I love the village of Luz and the nearby town of Lagos. The villa and gardens were spectacular. In 40 years of traveling we have never found a rental property we have enjoyed more. The location was perfect, a couple minute walk to the beech and restaurants. The grounds were not only beautiful but super private and quiet. Ameilia keeps the property maculate and is prompt to remedy any problem that might arise. We couldn't think of staying anywhere else in the Algarve and give it our highest recommendation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Carman, I am delighted that you enjoyed your vacation in Casa da Figueira so much. I hope you will come back many more times! Thank you, Sophie

Here I am, once again, trying to find adequate words to thank you for letting us use the beautiful and magic Casa da Figuiera for the past 4 weeks. It has been a priveledge. While we were there the mimosa trees shone bright yellow, the fig tree sprouted neon-green leaves, the tiny violets under the wall bloomed purple, and the abundant daisies dazzled us with white and mauve. The air was filled with perfume! The doves and various birds charmed us too. I cannot tell you what a wonderful difference the new living-room window has made---especially during the colder "inside" days. The light and the view this has afforded is such a plus for the casa. We enjoyed all our walks on the different area beaches. All have such breath-taking views. What a treasure is the Western Algarve! However, at sun-down we always walked on the Praia da Luz-- and the magnificent light on the cliffs was awesome! The country-side became awash with colour as the wild flowers burst out on the roadsides and in the fields. I especially appreciated learning the names of so many intriguing plants in your volume of "Plantas do Algarve" which is illustrated so beautifully. I too own an old family summer place, over 100 years old and has been in my family for a long, long time. It too is full of family treasures and memories. This is one of the many reasons we love renting your casa so much. It feels like home. We look forward to our return next March!!!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Dear Anne and Graham, thank you so much for returning to Casa da Figueira. I am happy that you enjoy the new living room window. We continue to make yearly investments in Casa da Figueira. Warm regards, Sophie

We stayed a week with our kids aged 8 and 10. We found the accomodation large and perfectly adequate. The gardens and the pool are lovely. The reason for not giving 5 stars, is that for us the house itself lacked the "wow-effect". I guess it is also a matter of taste but we found the decoration somewhat older and things like doorhandles, insect screens and 2 out of 3 bathrooms showed some signs of wear and tear. However, the owner is really responsive to feedback. Make sure to bring your own DVD's as they are not in the house yet (although the owner will change this soon). I also suggested to leave an information package for the guests, as apart from general travel guides, there was little information on the house and Praia da Luz and surroundings. So t0 sum up, a good holiday in a good place, with some room for improvement.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Dear Cindy, thank you for vacationing in Casa da Figueira. Your suggestions are very much appreciated. Many of the improvement we keep making to Casa da Figueira, our traditional Portuguese home, were suggested by our clients. Sorry about the insect screens, we fixed them and all are now in excellent working condition. We also remodeled a couple of the bathrooms and will check out the others this winter. The kitchen was doubled in size last year. Also many thanks for suggesting we leave some DVDs as well as a folder or information booklet regarding Casa da Figueira and things to do. Casa da Figueira now has a couple dozen DVDs as well as CDs for our clients to enjoy. In addition I pulled together a comprehensive booklet with information about Casa da Figueira itself, Praia da Luz and other practical and entertainment info. Thanks again! Sophie

My family and I spent a wonderful week at Casa da Figuera in September. There was lots of space for our group which included my brother and sister-in-law and my daughter and two grandsons. It was the perfect place for a family holiday. We loved the pool and surrounding gardens and the fact that we could walk to the town and beach. Many thanks to the housekeeper, Amelia, for all her help and to you Sophie for making it so easy to rent your place. Everything went so smoothly. We would stay there again in a heartbeat and I have recommended it to all my family and friends in Canada and England.Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Julie, many thanks for staying at Casa da Figueira. Amelia is indeed fantastic. For the last 15 years she has provided Casa da Figueira's clients with excellent housekeeping services (including laundry) in a very discrete way. Thank you for telling your friends about your wonderful Casa da Figuiera vacation and we hope that you stay at our villa again in the future. Warm regards, Sophie

My husband and I enjoyed an incredible week at Casa da Figueira. Enough can't be said about the comfortable home, the beautiful beach, the charming town and the ease of booking and working with the very helpful Sophie. What we enjoyed most was the privacy the home offered and its close proximity to the beach, shops and restaurants. If you want a fun night out on the town, it's yours with an easy stroll. If you want a relaxing night in, you've got ample outdoor space, a well equipped kitchen, a grill and the beautiful setting of Casa da Figueira to enjoy in complete peace and quiet. My only regret is that we only stayed one week and not two!Owner response: Dear Emily, thank you for vacationing in Casa da Figueira. Indeed, the combination of being extremely "private" and "walking distance from the town, beach, trails etc..." is what we love about Casa da Figueira. I hope you return to Casa da Figueira.Sophie

Casa Da Figueira looks great on the photographs but the reality is even better. A fantastic spacious villa, beautiful large gardens, wonderful pool in a brilliant location just a short walk to the beach, local shops and restaurants. We had a wonderful holiday, spent most of the time in the pool and at the beach, we BBQ'd most nights (fish from Lagos market was great) and just lazed and relaxed by the pool, all you need is a swimming costume and a toothbrush - don't bring too many clothes because Amelia took care of the laundry. Amelia is just the loveliest person, efficient, unassuming and so friendly the children loved her, nothing is too much trouble. Only very minor criticism is the pool temperature, its ok for adults but our small children found it a bit cold so i would consider having it heated next time, and there will be a next time as we are already looking at the calendar for next year. Thankyou Sophie for sharing your lovely villaRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Sarah, thank you for staying at Casa da Figueira and for your very kind review. Amelia is indeed amazing. Normally the large private pool temperature is OK in July and August, especially if you keep the cover on at night. In the winter, spring and fall it is however good to have the pool heated although electricity is very expensive in Portugal. But as you say, with little kids even heating it in the summer might be useful. Next time just ask Amelia and she can turn it on even if you did not order it in advance. I am happy you will be returning to Casa da Figueira, thank you so much! Sophie

We had a brilliant holiday, perfect location, a 2 minute walk from the beach and restaurants. The villa was lovely and well equipped with plenty of games for the children, our 2 young boys loved the pool and all the inflatables. Amelia is fantastic, she does a great job and nothing is too much trouble. Hope to return in the near future.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Hi Nick, indeed, we are lucky that Casa da Figueira is so close to the beach and has a large heated pool. All our kids, now young adults, loved coming at all ages. Ofcourse, Amelia with her discrete and excellent service is the best. She has helped Casa da Figueira clients for well over 15 years now. Hope to host you again soon. Sophie

A wonderful oasis in a perfect location. Ideally placed for the beach, town, shops, restaurants, etc. the house is beautifully looked after by the lovely Amelia, always helpful, smiling and really the icing on the cake. The villa is charming, very portuguese and very relaxing. We have stayed in many villas in Luz, and this one we will visit again. Also, when booking, it was an absolute pleasure to deal with Sophie, who couldn't have been more helpful, and prompt with her replies. A wonderful holiday.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Ciara, thank you for your kind review. I indeed always try to be as helpful as possible during the booking process to make sure that even prior to your stay the experience with Casa da Figueira is as positive as possible. I totally agree with you that Amelia's discrete and valuable help during your stay is truly the icing on the cake. I would not know what to do without her. Our time here was unforgettable. Being teachers, my wife and I truly needed a week to deflate before heading to Spain for adventure. We couldn't have chosen a better location and my wife and I spent the later part of our stay lamenting we had only booked one week. Our 2 kids were so sad to leave they were practically In tears. Between the picturesque beach town, the pool, and the lovely gardens, our kids were in nirvana. In fact, my daughter pledged to return on her honeymoon. As she is only 12, we hope that trip is some years away. Amelia was wonderful and returned 20 euros we thoughtlessly left in our pants.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Dear Matthew, being at Casa da Figueira indeed often feels as being in nirvana! Amelia does a great job at helping with laundry and keeping the villa spotless. She's been with us for almost 20 years and before that her aunt worked for my parents for 15 years. She's family to us. Hope you and for sure your daughter return to Casa da Figueira! Thank you, Sophie

A truly magnificent villa! Superb location, perfect pool, wonderful gardens, incredibly well equipped and kept spotlessly clean every day by the wonderful Amelia. Fresh flowers arranged every day, all our washing done for us - who could ask for more! We have been doing villa holidays for very many years - including two others in Luz - this one is up there at the top.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Cate, thank you for your kind words. Indeed, we are blessed that Amelia provides such exceptional service for the families that say in Casa da Figueira, including as you say doing your laundry, helping with dishes, making the beds and keeping the villa in spotless condition. Living in the USA, we could never rent our Praia da Luz home without having Amelia take care of it and of the families that stay at Casa da Figueira. Hope that you will come back soon! Sophie

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: We were both born in Europe but now live in Boston, MA. Jesus teaches at MIT and Sophie does research for a technology company. We have 6 grown-up children. Flying to Portugal (Lisbon) is easy from Boston; and from Lisbon to Casa da Figueira is an nice drive to Praia da Luz. From Europe the best way to fly to is Faro which is an hour drive away from Casa da Figueira. My parents bought Casa da Figueira in 1976 when I was a teenager. Casa da Figueira is a beautiful traditional Portuguese villa that has been in our family for almost 4 decades. We do yearly upgrades and maintenance to keep it in exceptional condition while maintaining the authentic atmosphere. in 2012 we renovated the kitchen and we have renovated the bathrooms, build a beautiful pool, completely surrounded the large property and tropical yard with a traditional white wall so its safe for children to run around. Our own six childeren, now young adults, have enjoyed coming to Casa da Figueira at all ages. We are looking for individuals or families who will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do and who can help cover the costs of maintaining this beautiful exclusive property and keeping Amelia, our truly amazing housekeeper who has worked for my family for 15 years, employed. We are very much looking forward to hear from you. Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo, Boston, MA
Why the Owner Chose Praia da Luz:
Casa da Figueira, a traditional Portuguese villa with private heated pool and tropical gardensis paradize for us. The location is perfect: Lisbon is a 3 hour highway drive to Casa Figueira and Faro is a 1 hour highway drive to Casa Figueira. Casa Figueira is extremely closely located to the beach in Parque da Praia, the beach park. In fact, you can hear the waves while enjoying breakfast outside. The 70 meter walkway gets you to a little cobble stone street that is one block from the eastern side of the beach. The Algarve has over 25 fabulous golf courses, with the Boa Vista Course just 5 min from Casa da Figueira and 15 wineries. The villa is also one block from a nature trail that goes up the cliffs and is ideal for jogging, walking, biking or to witness amazing sunsets. The eastern limit of the beach of Luz is marked by the famous “black rock” noticeable since all the other cliffs are golden orange. Praia da Luz retains the charm and character of a traditional Portuguese village yet offers excellent facilities to complement the broad, safe, sandy beach. The narrow village streets meander up from the beach, past white-washed houses, an 16th century Fortaleza turned into a romatic restaurant and pretty yellow church offering many different religious services, to the village center with many restaurants, grocery stores, and a few pottery stores. The Algarve’s long Moorish control, its Mediterranean climate, and its abundance of fine sandy beaches endow the Algarve with a unique character. Separated from the rest of Portugal by rolling hills, Algarve, the southernmost province, with its abundance of sun, sardines and tuna, is an ideal vacation location. The closest city to Praia da Luz is Lagos. While Lagos is a very historic town, it has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the town
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
To answer this question, here is great feedback we received from one of our recent clients: 'We had such an incredible time. Your villa is charming, and obviously taken care of with a lot of love and attention. Amelia was wonderful, very helpful, and very patient with our questions. We walked everywhere, took tons of pictures, the views were stunning, and ate at pretty much all the places you mentioned. My husband went diving in Lagos, and all the guys went golfing up the road. We found the cork shop at the other end of the village, and we got used to orange egg yolks. We checked out all of Luz. We found the bakery and the soup shop. Quejadas were declared our breakfast food. We took a ride down to the fort in Sagres, and spent a day in Tavira exploring. That was an incredible crash course in history. We took plenty of pictures of the bridges, fort and churches. We climbed the mini mountain behind Casa da Figueira and walked all the way around it. That was more than enough exercise for me, but would not have missed it because the views and changing colors were perfect. By mid week, the guys were checking out the 'for sale' signs and comparing prices. We met all kinds of people, who were very kind. Needless to say we are not an overly quiet group, animated conversation being the norm, so at all the restaurants we went to, the owners came over and talked with us. Lots of stories were shared, and lots of advice was given. We were very surprised to find the beach being dog friendly which was great. We also had a person at the beach who made sand sculptures every day. There are so many other things we experienced on this trip that I am sure I am forgetting. In short, I have never had such a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable vacation in my life. We all had a wonderful time and would consider doing it again.' - Janie, Ed & Travis Gschrey, New York State, USA
Also very unique are Casa da FIgueira's tropical gardens and many mature fruit trees (for you to enjoy).
