What a fabulous opportunity to experience the Hilo side of the Big Island with an "Real Hawaii" feel. The cottage is darling. The setting peaceful (with its own waterfall!!!) 10 min. to Hilo (farmers' market and two GREAT museums). Easy access to road north to Waimea, another goes in the direction of the volcano. Beautiful bottanical garden down the road. Just EASY. Owners on property - great information and hospitality. We came home rested and wanting to share the "Hilo" side of our trip with everyone. This experience was a gift!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had a wonderful time on vacation. The cottage was just right for two adults, very comfortable, clean, and well decorated. We loved morning coffee on the front porch, watching the sunrise, walks to the waterfall, and yes... even the rain! The little dogs on the property were entertaining and were a fun addition to the charm of the property. We loved the horses, chickens, goats, sheep, and there was even a newborn baby lamb! The rooster never missed his morning wake-up crow in the morning. The town of Hilo was fun to explore and we made good use of the wonderful farmers market. There are good places to eat, Sombats for Thai food, as well as a little place called Tina's. The fresh fish market is close, so we made the most of the kitchen and grill and had every thing we needed to put together fine meals. We liked the Hilo side of the island much more than the Kona, and found plenty of things to do. This is a great property for those who like peace and quiet, and want to be away from city/resort types of accomodations. We wouldn't hesitate to return for another visit.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Clean and lovely cottage with an amazing view. Very quiet and serene location on a farm - loved all the animals and especially the dogs. Generally very well stocked - even had detergent but may need spices if doing a lot of cooking. Only stayed a couple of nights but wish we could've stayed longer! Easy to get to Hilo and volcano area. Definitely would recommend and would stay again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We loved this cottage, the horses, the waterfall....We had breakfast on the lanai every morning (there is an amazing view of the bay with beautiful sunsets in the evening). The cottage was clean and had everything we could possibly need. A short drive to Hilo and so many things to do. Don't forget to take some pictures at the waterfall (we wish we did)Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Where else do you find a place with a "private" waterfall, horses, a swimming pool and a huge garden with mango trees? We will never forget listening to the jungle sounds all day long, (including the cockcrow early in the morning) while sitting at the porch overlooking the beautiful estate. Hilo is a good, non-touristy place, and the Puu Moi cottage is a wonderful place to stay at that makes up for the rain. We also appreciated the kind but discreet help of our landlord SteveDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We loved everything about the cottage, especially sitting on the porch and enjoying the view. It is very comfortable, charmingly decorated, and had everything we needed. The location is peaceful and serene, yet only a short drive to Hilo and services. Oh, and the dogs were endlessly amusing! Thanks for a great rental!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Our stay was wonderful! I would especially recommend the cottage for families with young kids. Our 3 year old loved everything. The chickens, the dogs, horses, etc. We hiked twice to the waterfall. We swam every day in the beautiful pool. The owners were very nice. We would love to stay here again. the property is beautiful and very peaceful. In the country but still very close to Hilo. thanks again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

About the owner: Aloha! We are local residents of Hawai'i, born and raised. Being brought up with animals and coming from a ranching family, it is great to offer the lifestyle that we have lived. This cottage was built for family and friends to visit. Once our friends stayed at Pu'u Moi, we had offers from others who wanted the same experience of the country life, Hawaiian style. Our land has much to offer from green pastures, horses, chickens , sheep, little smiling dogs and waterfalls to rambutan orchids and endless mornings of beautiful sunrises.
Why the Owner Chose Papaikou:
This cottage was built for our mother to live in, and then we used it for family and friends to use when they would visit us in Hawai`i.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Being able to stay at this cottage is unique as it is surrounded by pasture land, animals, walking distance to a natural waterfall and pond, gated and no neighbors other than our home which is on the same property. We offer assistance as need to those staying in the cottage, and have respect for privacy as well.
