Why the Owner Chose Fairplay
Established in 1880, the historic DM cattle ranch encompasses 650 acres of private meadows and forest for fly-fishing, hunting (in season), horseback riding, nature walks, or just relaxing. Observant visitors may spot deer, elk, beaver, hawks, eagles, heron, bobcat, martin, or even moose while exploring this large property. It's not unusual for accomplished anglers to catch and release 30 brown trout per day on the ranch during the summer.
The Unique Benefits at this CabinThe DM Ranch is a very unique property in that we are implementing a “rent-a-ranch” concept, one that is very hard to find. We are not a guest ranch or a dude ranch. We are a spectacularly beautiful and historic working ranch that leases pasture, harvests hay and summers our horses. If you want to enjoy Breckenridge, Fairplay, Salida or Buena Vista, the DM is a short scenic ride to all. Come "rent-a-ranch" to enjoy a quiet peaceful retreat. We’re sure you will leave with thoughts of your return.
Breckenridge is a premier Colorado ski town and is the largest historic district in the state. The ski area opens on November 12th, 2010. The "Lighting of Breckenridge" holiday festival, complete with fireworks, is on December 4th. On January 25-30, 2011, join us for the amazing International Snow Sculpture Championship. Need more action? Try the dog sledding or the hot air balloon rides available!
Family Friendly and Affordable Skiing is just West of Salida and 63 miles from the DM Ranch. This ski area is known for it's abundant snow and local flavor.
With the Pike National Forest adjacent to the DM Ranch, visitors have direct access to unlimited trails for horseback riding, ATVing, dirt bike riding, Jeeping, hiking, mountain biking and camping. Guests will find great maps to guide them to the most spectacular mountain lakes and points of interest in the area.
Just a half hour from the ranch, Buena Vista is considered by many to be the capital of whitewater rafting in the U.S.! It is also popular for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, mountain biking, backpacking and kayaking. It is nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountain's Collegiate Peaks and boasts beautiful tree-lined streets ... a great place for shopping and dining!
Described as "sweetly unpretentious", Outside Magazine named Salida as as one of their "Dream Towns and Adventure Hideouts" in 2004. The Arkansas River winds through Salida's charming downtown area, which is home to blocks of Victorian buildings housing fantastic restaurants, galleries and boutiques. Surrounded by 14,000 ft. peaks, Salida is a perfect setting for numerous outdoor adventures including rafting, kayaking, biking, hiking, camping and hunting. This vibrant community hosts an impressive calendar of performing arts and special events.
A historic gold mining settlement, Fairplay was founded in 1859 during the early days of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Just 13 miles from the ranch, it's a short trip to town for groceries at Prather's, you name it at Ace Hardware, gifts at the pharmacy, pizza at Pizza Hut and bowling at the alley! South Park City, an open-air museum in town, is the site of relocated historic structures intended to recreate the early days of the Colorado Gold Rush. Kids love it! Side note: it's the basis for the TV series "South Park".
Named by prospectors and miners from Como, Italy, Como was founded during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush in 1859 and became the location of a roundhouse of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad to support the Colorado Silver Boom in 1879. The roundhouse has been renovated and is a tourist attraction. Como has the air of a ghost town that was once home to Mick's ancestors, who owned the local saloon and mercantile "back in the day".
World class Gold Medal trout fishing awaits beneath the waters of Spinney Reservoir. Anglers can find shoreline or fly fishing, belly boating or trolling opportunities in a peaceful and scenic setting. Spinney is open seasonally from mid-April to the end of October. Spinney is about 45 minutes from the ranch.
Anglers and writers consistently tout Eleven Mile's large reservoir for its outstanding fishing. When not reeling in a rainbow, brown, cutthroat, kokanee or pike, there are nearly five miles of scenic hiking and biking trails that await exploration. Ideal wind conditions make Eleven Mile a popular but not overly crowded destination for sailing, windsurfing and winter ice boating. Waterfowl hunting chances for a wide variety of ducks are excellent and are available each fall. Eleven Mile is less than an hour from the ranch.
Owner's Map of Fairplay
Mick Buyer was born and raised in Fairplay, Colorado to a pioneer cattle ranching family that laid roots in South Park in the 1860's. Outside of serving our country in the Korean War, he spent his life doing what he knew and loved; cattle ranching. Mick was a land man and a conscientious steward of it. Upon arrival at the DM, folks will clearly understand why he picked this property on which to complete his storied life. He purchased the DM Ranch in 1988, and, upon his passing in Colorado Springs, left the ranch to his son and daughter. They have completely renovated the guest cabin and the main house. Both love spending time at the ranch and building priceless memories with their families and friends. Although there is so much to do in the area, we find ourselves staying on the ranch where we love to fish out the back door, ride horses, hike and just plain relax.

My wife and I, along with another couple whom we have known for many years, spent a very leisurely and relaxing week at the main ranch house on the DM Ranch the first week in October, 2011. Our stay was very enjoyable and was a great retreat from life in suburbia and being only about a two hour drive from home was a real bonus. The colors were beautiful and the view from the picture window facing west was truly a picture right out of the old west. We took a look through the cabin, about a half mile west of the main house, which has been fully renovated and the view from there was even better! So good in fact that we chased the view over Westin Pass into Leadville for lunch and took a scenic drive back through Buena Vista. Spending a week away from the city and away from the usual tourist destinations turned out to be a real vacation. We would highly recommend the DM Ranch to anyone who loves the outdoors or just likes to stay inside and enjoy the outdoors from the warmth of a comfortable couch next to the wood burning stove. We had a great time and were not ready to leave at the end of the week. We will definitely be making a return visit.

We had a great time at the ranch. The cabin was exactly what we had hoped for. A beautiful setting with lots of room for our adult kids and grand children. The cabin was very clean and well stocked. My familys stay at the DM Ranch was nothing short of wonderfull! The ranch is beautifull and the cabin itself was great! I stayed with my wife and two girls for four days and the experience was one we hope to repeat in the future. The time spent on the river and the walks we had were priceless. We woke one morning to a large herd of elk surrounding our cabin. We went white water rafting in the Royal Gorge and mountain biking in Keystone during our stay. The cabin is located convieniently for all activities and the fishing on the ranch is awsome! Thanks again for your hospitality!!

What a beautiful, peaceful location. Very private. Roomy, comfortable, fully equipped. Everyone had their space when they wanted it. Acreage provided walking and exploring. Views worthy of postcards. Owners are great. Easy trip to town, but who wanted to leave the property? Perfect mountain vacation.

An incredible property.. An annual men's retreat with 5 of us stayed at the DM Cabin and it was perfect. Cabin is brand new, with a touch of luxury. Great views, and expansive propery would probably take a few hours to walk the perimeter. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a quiet retreat away from it all (except of course, if you absolutely have to stay connected, then the hi-speed wireless and hi-def TV can meet that need!)

Some friends and I rented the DM Ranch for a spring break getaway at the end of March. The DM is perfectly located within driving distance of great skiing at Breck and great fishing on the 3 miles of private stream that run through the property. The cabin is cozy, well-decorated, and as private as it gets. In the morning the rising sun pours through the windows while elk roam the property each evening at sunset. If you're looking for the perfect Colorado escape, the DM Ranch is as good as you'll find. We'll definitely be returning.

A wonderful place to get away from it all.

This cabin was very cozy and the property/views were unbelievable. It was so fun to light a fire and watch the snow fall outside while playing cards and games with my family. We also found a great sledding hill on the property and the kids had a blast. I would recommend this cabin to any family who just needs some time away together. We will definitely be back in the summer so we can try out the great fishing we've heard about!!

I could not believe the view from the loft ! I went to bed with sound of a cracking fire and the moon shining through the loft windows... The sun then shone in nicely upon my awakening! Not a sound was heard! it was 30 degrees outside and i was warm and toasty inside! BRAND NEW and acres of Forest to hike /bike /ride..... Breckenridge is fun and the skiing at Monarch was affordable and friendly.
