Location: Patzcuaro, Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexican Riviera, Mexico (30 Miles West of the State Capital, Morelia.)

La Jacaranda is a “one of a kind” Patzcuaro style home surrounded by a garden in a colonial village which was founded in 1535. The large walled garden of La Jacaranda is a retreat from the world with its flowers, green lawn, and many trees including an enormous ash tree with a flowering bougainvillea that climbs over 100 feet up into the tree. The house has windows on all four sides and a very large glass domed “light well” in the center that brings light and sunlight into the center of the house.

The house is fully furnished for enjoying the lifestyle of Pátzcuaro. You can walk to the Main Plaza in the center of the village in 15 minutes or ride a “collectivo” minibus for 6 Pesos(about US$0.50) and arrive there is 5 minutes. Or you can take a taxi for Pesos $20.00 (about US$2.00)anywhere within the Central Historical Area of Patzcuaro. Although there is a large supermarket only one block from the villa, you can also visit the daily outdoor vegetable and fruit market in the center of Pátzcuaro for purchases of fresh tropical and temperate fruits and vegetables. In the outdoor street market you will find many types of exotic products, some unknown outside of Michoacán.

Although Pátzcuaro has the feeling and appearance of a small colonial village, we have almost daily cultural and musical performances with visiting artists and local performers. Most performances are cost free. Although the foreign community in Michoacán is still small, there are one or more gatherings each week offering a ready opportunity to meet the foreign community of Americans, Canadians, and Europeans.

La Jacaranda is your “Home Away” in Mexico’s most beautiful colonial village.

    • Pátzcuaro is located in one of the richest native handcraft areas in Mexico. P’urhépecha Indians live in the many villages of the “Meseta P’urhépecha” that extends from Pátzcuaro for 100 miles northwest. Throughout this area, each village specializes in a different hand craft that the P’urhépecha have been making traditionally for hundreds of years. Also, Pátzcuaro and the surrounding villages have almost daily festivals and fiestas of traditional Indian and Spanish colonial origin, especially the festivals during the Christmas holidays, Easter, and the Night of the Dead celebrations.

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

Tracy and I searched Mexico from the Caribbean to the Pacific looking for our special place. We found it in Pátzcuaro. Tracy was born in Aruba, grew up in Brazil, and lived many years in Tahiti before moving to the United States. I was born in the United States and lived in Dubai, Nicaragua, and Canada before returning to the United States to meet Tracy. In Pátzcuaro we enjoy our association with the Mexican people, culture, food and colonial architecture. Between the two of us we speak English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and some German and Italian. We only hope that we will have an opportunity to share our oasis with you in Pátzcuaro.

Why the Owner Chose Patzcuaro

After we found Pátzcuaro, it was an easy choice for us to move there. Pátzcuaro is only 1 and 15 minutes by car or taxi from the international airport in Morelia and we have great roads throughout the Colonial Circle of Central Mexico. We are 3.5 hours from the Pacific Coast and the beach resorts of Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo and 4 hours by car to Mexico City or Guadalajara. The most charming thing about Pátzcuaro is that it is colonial & traditional in its culture and architecture and has an active P’urhépecha Indian culture, language, and crafts. Living in Pátzcuaro is safe & clean, and the climate is cool at night and warm and sunny each day. What more could a person want ?!

The Unique Benefits of this Villa

We enjoy La Casa del Sol because of the double garden/courtyards on each side of the living room/dining room and the flowers and flowering bushes. In addition, the house is special because it has so much light and views from inside into the garden and courtyard. In every month of the year we can eat outside on the covered porch with a view of the garden where we enjoy watching the birds and humming birds that come to our garden each day. On cool nights we enjoy a fire in the fireplace in the living room.

Disappointing to Say the Least

Guest: Carol Crofton (Victoria, BC)
Date of Stay: 12/04/11 Review Submitted: 02/02/12

My husband and I stayed at La Jacaranda over the period of late November to the end of January 2012. We found the house to be cold and drafty with sub-standard bedding linens and towels. The two fireplaces could not keep this chilly, uncomfortable house warm and the interior of the house was very dark but for a skylight in the dining room. The housekeeper and the gardener that were employed at the house were surly, uncommunicative and with the gardener showing up before dawn on a number of occasions to rake leaves directly outside the master bedroom, it was very much an invasion of privacy. The casita was not avaialble to use as it was definitely the gardeners private spot. While my husband and I spoke limited Spanish the interactions with these two people was the most uncomfortable, elsewhere people were warm and friendly and willing to work with our efforts to communicate. Add all of this to the smell of sewage coming from over the back wall I would never return nor recommend this home.

Owner response:We are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at La Jacaranda. You are the first Guests since we started renting through VRBO and HomeAway that have not been fully satisfied. It is true that January is the coolest month of the year in Pátzcuaro; however, our house is not drafty and is one of the few in the village with windows on all 4 sides of the house and with sunshine entering from 3 sides of the house each day as the sun crosses the sky. Every room in the house has exterior windows, except for the sun room which has a full ceiling skylight which brings wonderful light and warmth into the center of the house. We and our guests find the home very comfortable, certainly not cold and drafty. I have for several years greatly enjoyed the two fireplaces when either working at my desk in the study or reading or watching television in front of the large cantera stone fireplace. The gardener and housekeeper have worked only for a local architect and us for over 30 years. They are humble, helpful people that are considerate, discreet, and attentive. They have a rigid pattern of work, never interfering with our sleep or privacy. I am sorry their care of the home was not comfortable for your lifestyle. No, the casita was not available for your use, inasmuch as it is used by the gardener and his wife for their meals and bathroom while they are at work. And it is never included in the rental of La Jacaranda. Yes, sometimes the smells in a mountain village in Central Mexico are not the same as one finds in some areas of the United States, Canada, or Europe. But for those of us that love Mexico, Pátzcuaro in particular, the smells of the streets, the markets, and the plazas are a part of the soul of Mexico that draw us back to live in this beautiful and historic village.

There were 5 of us and the house had more then enough space. Well furnished and the kitchen was well equipped. The home was very clean. The firewood that was provided was welcome.

Owner response:We are glad you were able to visit Patzcuaro during the Festival of "Night of the Dead". The other 2 main festival periods in Patzcuaro are Christmas through New Years and Easter. Glen Novinger

Perfect!

Guest: JM (Ottawa)
Date of Stay: 08/16/11 Review Submitted: 09/08/11

We stayed at La Jacaranda for 2 weeks in late August. Our stay was just perfect. La Jacaranda is an absolutely huge, lovely colonial style villa, extremely well situated, not too far from the city center. What's more if the inside are wonderful, the garden outside is absolutely fabulous. Flowering trees and bushes are constantly visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. We had the pleasure while being there of meeting Tracy, one of the owner. Charming lady, she made us feel welcome immediately. If we go back, we'll be sure to stay there again.

Owner response:We are so glad you enjoyed your visit to Patzcuaro. Tracy enjoyed meeting you and we look forward to you coming back for another visit. You will have to come back in the fall when the figs are ripe! Glen & Tracy Novinger

Guest: Sonia (San Antonio)
Date of Stay: 01/07/11 Review Submitted: 04/13/11

This property's appearance exceeded our expectations. It was immaculately clean, the owner knowledgeable and helpful. The house has lots of windows and light, with big rooms. The property is large with a lovely garden full of plants and flowers. The maid and gardener were very nice. We could walk to the central plazas and street market. La Jacaranda is comfortably furnished. We had everything we needed and really enjoyed our stay!

Owner response:We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in La Jacaranda. We also enjoy the plants and flowers in the garden very much. And during the week of Noche de los Muertos the streets full of flowers on sale are unbelievably colorful! Please come again soon to enjoy La Jacaranda.

A paradise in Pátzcuaro

Guest: Michèle (Francia)
Date of Stay: 01/31/10 Review Submitted: 02/19/11

I enjoyed my stay at Villa La Jacaranda. When I went in and closed the gate I had my own tranquil oasis. The house is comfortable and fully furnished. The fireplaces make it very cozy at any time of year. Having wifi internet access was very convenient for me. I recommend staying here.

Owner response:Bonjour, Michèle. I know you also enjoyed the convenience of the "combis". These collective transportation vans go to and from the Historic Center every few minutes. All you have to do is walk out the gate of La Jacaranda and hold out your hand and one will stop for you. Hop on, pay your 6 pesos, and you are there. By the way, one can also take a taxi to anywhere within Patzcuaro for 20 pesos. There is a taxi stand nearby at the Tanganxuan statue/traffic roundabout. Abrazos, Tracy

A Spacious Home in a Delightful Garden

Guest: A & K (Orinda, CA /USA)
Date of Stay: 02/01/11 Review Submitted: 02/17/11

This lovely home surprised us by its spaciousness. All the rooms are large: the kitchen has ample counter space, good appliances, and a useful assortment of dishes and cookware. In the dining / living room you can entertain a crowd, with a dining table that seats 10. We appreciated especially the two large desks in the study where my husband and I could each work comfortably on our lap top or on other projects. The house is cheerful, with large windows facing the garden, bright walls, colorful tiles, and elegant artwork. We enjoyed our breakfasts under a large domed skylight and our evenings in the reading area by the fireplace. The large roofed patio opens to an expanse of lawn with a huge tree in the center draped with purple bougainvillea vines. This was our favorite place to relax after exploring the bustling town outside. The house is meticulously clean and well maintained--the owners live here part of the year and keep everything in good working order. They have a local representative, a young woman who speaks fluent English, to help with any questions or problems. We had no problems—everything in the house functioned perfectly. A word about Patzcuaro: we had spent a month here before and wanted to return. There is so much to see and do in the town and the area that even on this second visit of three weeks there is not enough time to enjoy it all. We have traveled extensively around the world and can truly say that Patzcuaro has a unique charm. The area is a paradise for those who like folk art, bird watching, walking, and exploring the incredible scenery of lake and mountains. The town is small enough to be covered by foot yet large enough to provide constant surprises. The nearby sophisticated city of Morelia offers additional cultural amenities, such as concerts and museums. The American and Canadian expats are a small group but active and welcoming. The local people are overwhelmingly cordial. Two unforgettable experiences: the Day of the Dead celebration at the start of November and a trip to the monarch butterfly reserve in nearby mountains in February.

Owner response:We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at La Jacaranda. You seem to have been very busy enjoying Patzcuaro and the area. You are wonderful Guests. Please come back often. Glen

Our stay at Villa La Jacaranda in Patzcuaro

Guest: Jim (Denver, Colorado USA)
Date of Stay: 01/21/11 Review Submitted: 02/17/11

So much more than a home... felt like we were stayng at a classic Mexican Villa. Loved the exterior and interior architecture... and the grounds are beautifully landscaped with fruit trees and flowers. All the room areas are very spacious, light and cheery... lots of attention to detail - the tile work, timbered ceilings, and that cozy, wood burning fireplace was a great spot to be as we sipped a glass of wine in the evening. Very tastefully furnished... and everything was so "spic & span." The large walled garden provided some extra privacy and a quietness which we found very restful. The short walk to the Plaza and market was delightful. And, there are many choices for authentic Mexican dining. Arrange your plan to arrive at the Morelia International Airport - it was such an easy drive to Patzcuaro, and our visit to Guadalajara was only 4 hours away. My wife and I have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, and the colonial culture and atmosphere of Patzcuaro are a rare find! We're making plans to return soon.

Owner response:We are glad you enjoyed our home. See activities and places we enjoy at mypatzcuaro on blogspot.com Happy travels, Tracy

Our Stay For Three nights

Guest: Herb (Austin, Texas)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 02/14/11

My wife and I stayed for three nights. The acommodations were beyond our expectations. Started days with a fire in the hall fireplace to take off the chill. The breakfast was a traditional interior Mexican meal. It was a short walk to the center plaza and market. Also a mini van drove by, which was appreciated coming back tired and carrying souvenirs. The square was traditional colonial, with various kinds of restaurants and shops. The nearby market was vibrant, offering local fruits and vegetables and artisan works. In the evening we enjoyed having drinks on the back patio. We look forward to our next vacation in Patzcuaro ans staying at the same home.

Owner response:Herb, we are so glad you enjoyed La Jacaranda! One of the things I enjoy most is shopping for fruits and vegetables in the markets and although I have lived much of my life in Mexico and Latin America, almost every time I go the the market I see a new fruit or vegetable that I have not seen before. There is a large fireplace in the family room and another in the combination library/3rd bedroom. We look forward to your next visit. Glen
