Casual, affordable and oh so conveniently located, Nifty Thrifty is the answer for singles, couples and small families seeking elbow room on a visit to fun and funky Eugene. Park the car in the attached garage: Around the corner (29th and Willamette) you’ll find a gourmet market, and a variety of restaurants and shops. Bring a bike or take advantage of the two bus lines that are just steps from your door – either way, you’re within minutes of Fifth Street Market, the Hult Center, Saturday Market, the University of Oregon campus and Hayward Field, or Autzen Stadium. It’s only 20 minutes by car to the Lorane Valley wine country, less than 60 to the whitewater beauty of the McKenzie River, and less than 90 to hike or ski the Cascades. Nothing’s out of reach from this location!

The one-story 1950s-vintage house features two bedrooms, a full bath, hardwood floors, a fireplace, a private fenced and landscaped backyard (roses!) and a laundry. The full-sized kitchen is equipped with up-to-date appliances and everything you’ll need to pull together breakfast at the dinette or serve dinner in the dining room. If there’s business on your schedule, there’s a workstation in the master bedroom and WiFi throughout the house. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, friendly, and eclectic. You might hear the neighbor’s chickens softly clucking now and then, but don’t worry – no roosters!

My husband and I and our two Border Collies very much enjoyed our stay at the Thrifty Nifty. Clean and comfortable, and the yard was lovely with all the spring flowers coming out. The neighborhood is relatively quiet, and Amazon Park is nearby for walking. Great meat market and bakery nearby also!

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children.

Owner response: Thanks, Marsha and John! It was a pleasure to host you and those canine kids of yours. With our hardwood floors, we find it easy to host dogs with considerate owners like you two -- and still keep the place clean and breezy-fresh even for guests with allergies. Win-win? You bet! Come see us again. --Ellen

What a great home to stay! Ellen and Ken were awesome hosts. It was so nice to meet the owners! Everything was just as described and it felt almost like home. Even our corgi was happy. The house was in a great location; close to restaurants, shopping, Amazon Park (which is amazing), etc. It is also close to main roads that take you anywhere...from downtown to the local winery! We would definitely recommend the Nifty Thrifty to anyone who needs a home away from home! We hope to be back soon:-)

The house was very pleasant and functional and in the ideal location for us. Everything we needed was within easy walking distance--excellent grocery store, drug store, great used bookstore, yarn shop, even a gym! The kitchen and linen closet had everything we could think of (even tape!) and we definitely plan to return regularly. We had originally scheduled a week's visit, but unforeseen circumstances required us to extend our stay. Fortunately for us, Nifty Thrifty was available and Ellen made everything very easy. Many thanks to Ellen for being so helpful and providing the wonderful retreat!

Our daughter goes to U of O. A function this weekend brought the family to Eugene. We've stayed in every hotel in this town, it seems, and all of them are, at best, just ok. Nifty Thrifty? Amazing. Lovely, clean as a whistle, near the best things Eugene has to offer, and run by Ellen, who is as organized and on purpose as they come, in addition to be a very nice person. This place is like having your own home. Kitchen, laundry, great backyard, right down the street from Amazon Park and its trails, near Market of Choice, a couple miles from the University...we could not have asked for more. And the price? Mwah! Thanks, Ellen. We'll be back.

I love it that you loved it -- and can't believe you've gotten a review written before noon on your checkout day! That's a record I don't see being broken anytime soon! Ellen is the best. I have stayed at the Nifty Thrifty twice now. She is very responsive as I'm setting up my stay and makes the whole process work very smoothly. The Nifty Thrifty is such a great place! The no frills approach doesn't mean it lacks in comfort or value. The beds, the couch, having a secure garage, a back yard, a well-stocked kitchen, all of these make for an enjoyable stay! Thank you, Ellen.

Owner response: Aw thanks, Anne! I really appreciate the highlight on value. We don't offer Egyptian cotton sheets or granite counter tops. We offer good clean comfort and yes, value, in an absolutely great location. I'm glad that combination is what keeps you coming back! --Ellen

Perfect place for me and my 4-legged kids to spend the holidays. The house is in a quiet neighborhood, within walking distance to a dog park and trails, the fenced yard made it easy to be gone while shopping and exploring King Estate Winery and the Wildlife Safari in Winston, OR. The Southtowne shops are an easy walk with sushi and a bakery/espresso shop. I even grabbed the bus at the end of the block and took it to UofO, so convenient and easy. Next time we're in Eugene, we'll definitely stay here!!

My wife, our two Golden Retrievers and myself spent a very pleasant three days at Nifty Thrifty over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Our son and daughter-in-law are both in grad school at the university so we needed a dog friendly rental so we could visit with them for a family Thanksgiving. Nifty Thrifty was the perfect choice. The house is ideally located, close to shopping, public transit, the university and Amazon Park with its bicycle & running trails, children's playground and a great dog park. The home is spotless with all the extras one could need. Not to mention a garage to park your car in during Eugene's rainy winters. The back yard was perfect for our pooches, completely fenced with plants and lawn and a small patio with a table and chairs. The neighborhood is extremely quiet with very little traffic other than the local residents. All in all, we couldn't have been more pleased with our decision to rent Nifty Thrifty and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation rental in Eugene.

Owner response: Thanks so much, Mark! I'm glad you enjoyed such a happy, peaceful stay! Yes, it was a rainy Thanksgiving week -- which is kind of ideal, I think, for settling in with family or friends, building a fire in the fireplace, and making the holiday a quiet, low-key one. Hope to see you two (and the dogs) sometime soon! --Ellen

We arrived after 8 hours of driving on a cold and rainy night. Ellen met us at the door and gave us all the details on the house. The kitchen is fully equipped so we went shopping for dinner and firewood (only $5.99) at a great gourmet market right around the corner! Made gemelli with a roasted pork loin tomato sauce and an awesome local Pinot, while my husband built the fire. My daughter hooked up her laptop in the cozy bedroom and took advantage of free wifi. After dinner we snuggled on the couch with a movie (Note: bring your own dvds. We happened to have some with us). This house is an amazing deal! Comfy beds, immaculate bathroom with everything you need. Why would you ever book a hotel? Thanks Ellen! We'll be back!

Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

Owner response: I can't believe you decided to cook after all that driving, but you're right -- Nifty Thrifty's location, a block from Market of Choice, makes it not just possible but easy! (My only problem with that market is the "choice" part -- too many yummy possibilities!) It was a delight to host your family, Tanya. Do come see us again soon! --Ellen

About the owner: With my husband and two teenage children, I've traveled the world -- always on a budget, preferring to spend my money on interesting locations and new experiences instead of luxurious lodging. And, thanks to our very reasonable rates, you'll have the extra spending money you need to make your visit to Eugene and the Willamette Valley memorable. When you stay at Nifty Thrifty, you're not dealing with a distant owner. My family and I live just seven blocks away, and we're always happy to answer a question, solve a problem, or make a suggestion. Come visit us! We know you'll be pleased!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
If you've ever wished you could be a local, just for the length of your stay, Nifty Thrifty lets you do that. Neighbors will nod and wave, you'll see a variety of people passing on bikes or on foot on this quiet street, and when you venture forth to shop or find a meal, you'll be taking the same steps your neighbors do day after day. Have a conversation at one of the two bus stops that are each less than a block away. Pick up your morning coffee at the bakery/deli, browse the farmer's market (in summer), select something delicious to bring home from the best markets in town, have a beer at the sushi bar or a cocktail at a stylish restaurant -- it's all just two blocks from your home-away-from-home!
