We have a trail around the Big Pond through the woods that we walk daily in summer and ski daily in winter- great exercise and lovely to be in the woods. If you want to bring horses, we can recommend a nearby stable to board at. We can recommend local massage therapists, cooks, and will provide all guests with a 'cool things to do' sheet on the area, from hiking, fishing, lovely drives to waterfalls, museums, and sources of great food, farms, and much more. There are lots of wonderful things to explore!...moreless

We took our extended family to the Barn last spring and had an amazing time. I can't say enough about how warm and comfortable the house is - a combination of rustic charm and modern amenities. There is tons of space both inside and out: we had 5 different families staying there, with adults and kids of all ages, and somehow it accommodated all of our needs. There also lots to do so no one was ever bored. We already have our next vacation book!

Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner response: We really loved the poem you left us on your departure, and look forward to welcoming you back this year, when you will notice some new and improved developments in the house. (Do send feedback on what we can do to make your next stay better-- we know the little things count!)

We traveled up to the Northeast Kingdom for Thanksgiving and filled the house for the long weekend and enjoyed everything so very much. It is a spectacular place. I had not been there in 20-some years but remember it as a bit of paradise---and am happy to report it’s still one of the great pristine places in America. The Barn building itself is amazing, with soaring oak-hewn beams everywhere, and the acres of private grounds of fields and deep, quiet forests offer total privacy. Every day was filled with great things to do— from a 10K charity race the whole town turns out for, to group game times (Charades! Ping Pong challenges! Scrabble wars! Poetry reading competition!) and restful reading hours set around the majestic fireplaces in the Great Room and the huge kitchen. Let’s not forget the delicious cocktails and h’or d’oeuvres nightly, as well as cross country–skiing around the lake (yup, it snowed this year, nice white powder) and some lively games of pond hockey warmed by the fire-pit and steaming cocoa and marshmallows for the kids and hot toddys for the older generation. The kids were in heaven having fun. There was barbequing on the lookout patio, communal meal preparation in the gourmet kitchen, and truly wonderful meals served regally at the 20-person dining table. We went on long walks daily, too. The place was very clean, well-equipped, filled with very cool antiques (a 16-foot bellows, and antique sleigh, and massive wood and metal weigh scale as coffee table), and interesting to explore. Did I mention that the mattresses were the best we've ever slept on? All the beds have nice big duvets on them, very cozy. Baths are gleaming white and towels are whiter yet. The owners were warm and helpful and quick to answer all our questions in detail. We will definitely be back, and certainly recommend it most highly to anyone looking for the perfect Vermont getaway.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

Owner response: Massood, The pleasure is all ours! We hope to see you in "The Kingdom" again in the near future. Best wishes to your family, Nan

My siblings and I chose this place based on the description of the property, the amenities, and the reviews…all 5-star. I believe there may have been less favorable reviews that were not published. The main issue that I have is not with “The Barn”. It was accommodating with the large kitchen and dining area, many bedrooms with comfortable beds and lots of room to stretch out. We enjoyed the country setting and took advantage of the pond. The only concern with the residence was the refrigerator. Inside were items left by former leasers which, by the time we rented the place, looked like science projects gone bad. I would have thought that these items would have been removed during the cleaning for which a fee is charged. The main issue is the integrity of the owner. Our extensive contract, signed by myself and the owner, for the short term rental spelled out the associated costs; the rental for the week, Vermont taxes, non refundable cleaning fee and the security insurance protection. According to the contract, this security deposit was for payment of any rent, non-sufficient funds or other sums due owner, repair of any damage, TV or phone charges, and return any remaining portion of the deposit to Tenant with an accounting. We paid for all charges due the owner on time or ahead of schedule, we did not damage anything, we did not make long distance calls nor incur any charges for the TV. However, the owner, in spite of the mutually signed contract, refuses to return our security deposit. She states that it was non-refundable although the mutually signed agreement states otherwise. I have tried to get our refund via communications many times. After the first half dozen or so emails that I know she received, she blocked my computer from communicating with hers and she denied receiving the registered letter I sent although the signature when compared to the one on the contract looks like hers. I also called her phone several times of which she never answered nor returned my calls. It’s not so much the amount but the fact that she refuses to honor the contract. She presented herself, in early emails, as sincere, however, when it came time for her to abide by the contract, her true color was exposed. Reminds me of the Biblical idiom, “Beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Owner response: We pride ourselves in making our guests' stay the best one possible. And we try very hard to offer a positive and timely response to their concerns and issues, if and when we are made aware of them. We had immediately explained to this tenant when he contacted us after his stay that the security of $59 was in fact an insurance fee paid to a third party, thus unreturnable, which is why it was so modest a charge (differing from a traditional security deposit of several thousand dollars, returnable) and when he was not satisfied, offered to reimburse him 50% of that fee. (Though the nature of the insurance charge is explained in detail on the VRBO site to travelers booking any property, and offered as a convenience.) Lastly, if the fridge was in any way unsatisfactory, we were regrettably unaware of that, until this review.

We had a wonderful time a this location. The pictures don't do this place justice. My whole family was impressed. We used the barn as our base camp for my sons wedding and it was the place where the family could meet. We all live out of state. The quick service to issues was out of this world. During the whole stayed we only had one and they came within an hour. They couldn't fix the problem on the spot but they had someone at 8:00am the next day. Again, incredible service and attention to detail. We had an opportunity to use the canoes and kayaks at the lake and the kids loved it.

Owner response: Vivian: We were very happy to have helped in a small way make the wedding a success. Thanks to your nice husband and son, the space-aged brand new fridge now has a simple sheet on how to reset if little fingers reprogram the shiny glow-in-dark buttons! Love to see you all again, when you can have a chance to enjoy the peacefulness without having to worry about flowers and tablecloths and all you were juggling. Cheers... Nan

Ok, so we're all used to reading descriptions of things online and then having the real thing not quite measure up. I admit, I was skeptical when I read the descriptions and looked at the photos of this Barn. It couldn't be that good, right? And the lake isn't that gorgeous, right? I've never been so happy to be so wrong. We rented the barn with four other families for an annual get-away that brings us from around the country to meet up. The house was full, but never felt that way - it's enormous, and everyone could find their own space. We had two real foodie chefs in our group, and they both said they had never been in such a well-equipped kitchen. The fireplaces were ready to go, loaded with kindling, upon our arrival. The house is full of just enough things to do and hints about the owners to make you wonder who they are, without feeling like you're intruding on someone's life. And the lake? Perfection. We were there in late June, and it was like bathwater. Boats are provided (though we brought a couple of our own, which was good), and the floating dock provides a source of constant entertainment. Yeah, there are a few leeches, but that makes for great fun for the 10-year olds, and the parents got to make jokes about the famous leech scene in Stand By Me. Nothing to worry about. There is a lovely, easy path around the lake (2 miles round-trip). Poke around a little bit and you'll find the SECOND lake, hidden away up a hill, just waiting to be discovered and explored. If you want nightlife or bright flashing lights, this ain't the place for you. But for families that are looking to get away, have the chance to focus on the people in your group, and relax in an absolutely gorgeous and calm setting, I can't praise the barn highly enough. We've already made our reservations for next summer, and hope to return for years to come.

Our family reunion was for 7 brothers and sisters and their spouses from the US and Canada. The first word out of everyones mouth as they entered the barn was Wow. It lacked nothing and everything was so comfortable. From sitting outside underneath the big tree and looking at the beautiful views to having everyone having dinner all together in the dining room. You must all be very good cooks as the kitchen was stocked with everything that we needed. We were sad to have to leave as everything was just so wonderful. We are looking forward to returning next year. Thank you for allowing us to share this beautiful piece of property with you.

========================================= Coming back from a wonderful week in a fabulous environment, inside and out. Stepping in, we were astonished by the beauty of the place! Even our teenagers were impressed by the hugeness of this very special house. The pictures on VRBO don’t give it justice. Every corner of the house is carefully decorated with antiques, giving every space a very warm atmosphere. The kitchen is particularly well equipped, with ovens, dishwashers and sinks coming in pairs, the vast countertops, and everything needed to cook for a large group. Nothing is missing! The bedrooms are very cosy, the beds very comfortable. Spaces for fun and relaxation are perfect and also full equipped: inviting living rooms, reading and game areas. We particularly enjoyed the ping pong table. The outside environment was equally inviting. Snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails are directly accessible from the house. We also skied at the very nice Burke Mountain ski resort, about 30 minutes away by car. All in all, a very wonderful week that we hope to have a chance to renew!

We have rented many beautiful houses in many beautiful places but this is may be our favorite. The location is spectacular, on the side of a mountain with gorgeous views in every direction. The house is huge and charming. Lots of comfortable bedrooms (good mattresses) and many different living spaces to relax. A large, beautiful kitchen to prepare meals. The owners must love to cook because they have everything. It's a great place to have a party with lots of family and friends as there are so many different places to relax - three fireplaces, upstairs and downstairs living rooms. Books and interesting antiques everywhere. It would also be comfortable for smaller groups because of the way the house is configured. There are endless trails outdoors, private, peaceful swimming ponds with clean water, lakes and mountain climbing nearby, delicious icecream downtown. We were there in the summer and caught the country fair but I would love to go in the winter for crosscountry skiing. This place is really fun. We will go back.

We had a girls' college reunion (eight of us, but could have accommodated more). The house is simply spectacular—soaring ceilings with wonderful antiques but a thoroughly modern sun filled, cherry wood kitchen (great if you like to cook-the owners clearly do-they have every pan possible! ) and four full baths, beautifully decorated and fitted out with everything you could possibly need in supplies. The family was delightful to deal with, and at our request arranged to have someone come in and help with cleanup every day so we could really relax; it felt like a private hotel! The natural beauty of the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. The house opens onto a green lawn sloping to four ponds and up the hill is a hidden gem—a perfect, pristine private lake. You can hike through the trails behind it in perfect solitude. he house has TV, and music, and wonderful books to read. Incredible sunsets. From Boston, the trip took a bit over three hours; from NY five hours (I-91 north all the way) -- not bad considering you are almost in Canada. Drive is gorgeous.

We have stayed at the barn several times and each time it has been absolutely wonderful. The "Barn" is actually a converted barn, located on a hill facing both east and west. You have a beautiful view of the mountains to the west and can clearly see Jay Peak-a great day's ski trip, and Burke is very nearby as well. To the east are several ponds and miles and miles of trails that are great to cross country ski on, to hike on or to just meander along. They are well maintained. There are several ponds; the upper pond is a great swimming place and has canoes and a sunfish as well as a float to swim out to. The "Barn" itself is fantastic. It is clean and very spacious, and can easily sleep many people-we have been as few as 6 and as many as 16. The beds are very comfortable and the house is well stocked with nice linens and towels. Every one of the bedrooms has a great view. There is also a great sleeping loft where the kids like to sleep. The house is stocked with board games, shelves and shelves of books and a vast assortment of movies to watch. There is a ping pong table which is on the upstairs landing and a big sectional sofa downstairs for watching television or movies. There is a great fireplace in the living room as well as one in the kitchen which warms up the house nicely. The big kitchen has a center island where many can help to make a meal. It helps that the owners are serious cooks-the kitchen has everything you could need to bake and cook and even has an Ipod port for music. The kitchen table is used generally for breakfast or chopping, and a 12' table at one end of the living room seats many people for dinner. Cooking and planning meals is actually fun there and there are good markets nearby. I cannot recommend a more wonderful place-we go every year as often as we can. There is so much to do there-skiing, swimming, hiking, sleigh riding, dog sledding, going to the movies nearby in Newport or exploring the Northeast Kingdom-a heavenly corner of Vermont.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1964

About the owner: We are a family of 7 brothers and sisters (plus assorted spouses or significant others, 14 offspring, lots of cousins, in-laws and friends) who live variously in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles but who call Vermont home. We are lawyers, publishers, hotel decorators, science editors, art directors, video filmmakers turned property managers, architects. This is the place we come to be together, to celebrate holidays, to enjoy nature in all the wonderful ways it is still pristine in our part of Vermont. The house was a 1900 barn, with all the old beams, that used to be home to 300 cows and as children we lived in the white farmhouse alongside and jumped from the haylofts. We decided as the family grew to renovate the barn as a home we could ll fit into and with my sister as architect, brother as contractor, another sister as director of fixtures and the rest as assistants, and our talented neighbors are carpenters, electricians and masons, we did that back in 1990.

                      Why the Owner Chose Barton:
Our parents were both educators and they had friends who were professors who had summer/ family houses nearby and we came first to visit and fell in love with the place. Then, when my father won a large teaching prize one year, our parents decided to use that money to 'buy the farm,' a decision that was inspired, if a little mad) then and that we and our children thank them for now.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The private pond is pretty spectacular—in summer it is heaven on earth to canoe, swim, and sail on. Two smaller ponds offer iceskating and swimming as well. In winter we can skate there. Around the pond we have a trail that circles it through the woods that is great for walks, for cross country skiis, berry picking, nature exploring and horseback riding. A stone circle stands by the small ponds for bonfires and marshmellow roasting.
