Ok, so we're all used to reading descriptions of things online and then having the real thing not quite measure up. I admit, I was skeptical when I read the descriptions and looked at the photos of this Barn. It couldn't be that good, right? And the lake isn't that gorgeous, right? I've never been so happy to be so wrong. We rented the barn with four other families for an annual get-away that brings us from around the country to meet up. The house was full, but never felt that way - it's enormous, and everyone could find their own space. We had two real foodie chefs in our group, and they both said they had never been in such a well-equipped kitchen. The fireplaces were ready to go, loaded with kindling, upon our arrival. The house is full of just enough things to do and hints about the owners to make you wonder who they are, without feeling like you're intruding on someone's life. And the lake? Perfection. We were there in late June, and it was like bathwater. Boats are provided (though we brought a couple of our own, which was good), and the floating dock provides a source of constant entertainment. Yeah, there are a few leeches, but that makes for great fun for the 10-year olds, and the parents got to make jokes about the famous leech scene in Stand By Me. Nothing to worry about. There is a lovely, easy path around the lake (2 miles round-trip). Poke around a little bit and you'll find the SECOND lake, hidden away up a hill, just waiting to be discovered and explored. If you want nightlife or bright flashing lights, this ain't the place for you. But for families that are looking to get away, have the chance to focus on the people in your group, and relax in an absolutely gorgeous and calm setting, I can't praise the barn highly enough. We've already made our reservations for next summer, and hope to return for years to come.

Our family reunion was for 7 brothers and sisters and their spouses from the US and Canada. The first word out of everyones mouth as they entered the barn was Wow. It lacked nothing and everything was so comfortable. From sitting outside underneath the big tree and looking at the beautiful views to having everyone having dinner all together in the dining room. You must all be very good cooks as the kitchen was stocked with everything that we needed. We were sad to have to leave as everything was just so wonderful. We are looking forward to returning next year. Thank you for allowing us to share this beautiful piece of property with you.

========================================= Coming back from a wonderful week in a fabulous environment, inside and out. Stepping in, we were astonished by the beauty of the place! Even our teenagers were impressed by the hugeness of this very special house. The pictures on VRBO don’t give it justice. Every corner of the house is carefully decorated with antiques, giving every space a very warm atmosphere. The kitchen is particularly well equipped, with ovens, dishwashers and sinks coming in pairs, the vast countertops, and everything needed to cook for a large group. Nothing is missing! The bedrooms are very cosy, the beds very comfortable. Spaces for fun and relaxation are perfect and also full equipped: inviting living rooms, reading and game areas. We particularly enjoyed the ping pong table. The outside environment was equally inviting. Snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails are directly accessible from the house. We also skied at the very nice Burke Mountain ski resort, about 30 minutes away by car. All in all, a very wonderful week that we hope to have a chance to renew!

We have rented many beautiful houses in many beautiful places but this is may be our favorite. The location is spectacular, on the side of a mountain with gorgeous views in every direction. The house is huge and charming. Lots of comfortable bedrooms (good mattresses) and many different living spaces to relax. A large, beautiful kitchen to prepare meals. The owners must love to cook because they have everything. It's a great place to have a party with lots of family and friends as there are so many different places to relax - three fireplaces, upstairs and downstairs living rooms. Books and interesting antiques everywhere. It would also be comfortable for smaller groups because of the way the house is configured. There are endless trails outdoors, private, peaceful swimming ponds with clean water, lakes and mountain climbing nearby, delicious icecream downtown. We were there in the summer and caught the country fair but I would love to go in the winter for crosscountry skiing. This place is really fun. We will go back.

We had a girls' college reunion (eight of us, but could have accommodated more). The house is simply spectacular—soaring ceilings with wonderful antiques but a thoroughly modern sun filled, cherry wood kitchen (great if you like to cook-the owners clearly do-they have every pan possible! ) and four full baths, beautifully decorated and fitted out with everything you could possibly need in supplies. The family was delightful to deal with, and at our request arranged to have someone come in and help with cleanup every day so we could really relax; it felt like a private hotel! The natural beauty of the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. The house opens onto a green lawn sloping to four ponds and up the hill is a hidden gem—a perfect, pristine private lake. You can hike through the trails behind it in perfect solitude. he house has TV, and music, and wonderful books to read. Incredible sunsets. From Boston, the trip took a bit over three hours; from NY five hours (I-91 north all the way) -- not bad considering you are almost in Canada. Drive is gorgeous.

We have stayed at the barn several times and each time it has been absolutely wonderful. The "Barn" is actually a converted barn, located on a hill facing both east and west. You have a beautiful view of the mountains to the west and can clearly see Jay Peak-a great day's ski trip, and Burke is very nearby as well. To the east are several ponds and miles and miles of trails that are great to cross country ski on, to hike on or to just meander along. They are well maintained. There are several ponds; the upper pond is a great swimming place and has canoes and a sunfish as well as a float to swim out to. The "Barn" itself is fantastic. It is clean and very spacious, and can easily sleep many people-we have been as few as 6 and as many as 16. The beds are very comfortable and the house is well stocked with nice linens and towels. Every one of the bedrooms has a great view. There is also a great sleeping loft where the kids like to sleep. The house is stocked with board games, shelves and shelves of books and a vast assortment of movies to watch. There is a ping pong table which is on the upstairs landing and a big sectional sofa downstairs for watching television or movies. There is a great fireplace in the living room as well as one in the kitchen which warms up the house nicely. The big kitchen has a center island where many can help to make a meal. It helps that the owners are serious cooks-the kitchen has everything you could need to bake and cook and even has an Ipod port for music. The kitchen table is used generally for breakfast or chopping, and a 12' table at one end of the living room seats many people for dinner. Cooking and planning meals is actually fun there and there are good markets nearby. I cannot recommend a more wonderful place-we go every year as often as we can. There is so much to do there-skiing, swimming, hiking, sleigh riding, dog sledding, going to the movies nearby in Newport or exploring the Northeast Kingdom-a heavenly corner of Vermont.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 1964

About the owner: We are a family of 7 brothers and sisters (plus assorted spouses or significant others, 14 offspring, lots of cousins, in-laws and friends) who live variously in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles but who call Vermont home. We are lawyers, publishers, hotel decorators, science editors, art directors, video filmmakers turned property managers, architects. This is the place we come to be together, to celebrate holidays, to enjoy nature in all the wonderful ways it is still pristine in our part of Vermont. The house was a 1900 barn, with all the old beams, that used to be home to 300 cows and as children we lived in the white farmhouse alongside and jumped from the haylofts. We decided as the family grew to renovate the barn as a home we could ll fit into and with my sister as architect, brother as contractor, another sister as director of fixtures and the rest as assistants, and our talented neighbors are carpenters, electricians and masons, we did that back in 1990.

                  Why the Owner Chose Barton:
Our parents were both educators and they had friends who were professors who had summer/ family houses nearby and we came first to visit and fell in love with the place. Then, when my father won a large teaching prize one year, our parents decided to use that money to 'buy the farm,' a decision that was inspired, if a little mad) then and that we and our children thank them for now.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The private pond is pretty spectacular—in summer it is heaven on earth to canoe, swim, and sail on. Two smaller ponds offer iceskating and swimming as well. In winter we can skate there. Around the pond we have a trail that circles it through the woods that is great for walks, for cross country skiis, berry picking, nature exploring and horseback riding. A stone circle stands by the small ponds for bonfires and marshmellow roasting.
