Point Reyes Station house description

“A Treetop Fantasy” Time Magazine

“Blackthorne floats among the treetops like a great ship” AAA's VIA magazine

Would you like your vacation or corporate retreat to be in a one-of-a-kind, totally unique home resembling a giant elegant tree house that Sunset magazine called “A carpenter’s fantasy”?

To see a video of this property go to: http://www.youtube.com/embed/E8bwSwMqAbM?rel=0 or simply click the Video button on this page.

The Blackthorne (formerly the Blackthorne Inn) is a 6 bedroom 5.5 bath totally private 3200 square foot home resembling a giant, elegant tree house with 3500 square feet of decking adjacent to a national park (The Point Reyes National Seashore) yet centrally located only 1.4 miles from the town of Point Reyes with its fine dining and shops, 2.5 miles from the village of Inverness, minutes from world class ocean beaches and Tomales Bay State Park swimming beaches, less than a mile from the Park’s headquarters with endless hiking trails and less than one hour from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and the Napa/Sonoma wine country.

“The Blackthorne, about an hour north of San Francisco, looks as if it were built by mad King Ludwig working in wood.” The Dallas Morning News

General Description: This 4-story home sits on a private 3 acres that feels like a thousand acres as you are surrounded by national park in total privacy. The Blackthorne rises to the level of the treetops with the help of a 4-story handmade cedar spiral staircase. The atrium built with floor-to-ceiling glass doors from San Francisco’s former train station connects to the living room with it’s 20 foot ceiling, 6 skylights, castle-like turrets, and walk-in stone fireplace.

First, Second and Third Floors: The first floor has two large bedrooms, one with it's own additional sitting room, each with private entrances and decks. There is one full bath on this floor. The second floor has the living room, large dining area, kitchen, atrium, half bath and massive decking and separate laundry room with 1 washer and 2 dryers. The third floor has two very unique gabled bedrooms complete with skylights and stained glass, each with its own private bathroom and deck.

4th Floor and Detached Cabin: The octagonal shaped bedroom on the 4th floor has floor to ceiling glass on 7 of its 8 sides and treetop panoramic views on all sides. This room connects to a one-of-a-kind footbridge that leads to a private deck with bathroom and hot tub and both indoor and outdoor showers. In addition there is a one-bedroom detached cabin with queen bed, private bath and Satellite TV included with your rental.

“This is an architectural achievement. The operative word here is ‘elegant,’ for while whimsical in design, offers every imaginable comfort and feature”
Diane Siskin, Chattanooga New-Free Press

For your enjoyment The home comes with 4 televisions with 170 channels, DSL high speed wireless internet, 150 first run high definition movies (DVD's), over 100 CD's for music as well as 4 ipod players, five telephones with unlimited local and long distance calling (in the U.S.),a gas Bar BQ Grill, a sparkling hot tub and baby grand piano. In addition, guests are provided with 4 tennis racquets, tennis balls and a key to a private tennis court 3 minutes away for unlimited tennis.

If you want a one-of-a-kind experience that you, your family and friends will remember, talk about and return to, visit this unique place and see why the New York Times reader’s poll gave The Blackthorne its 5 star highest rating.

Although children love the Blackthorne, the home may not be suitable for young children as there are many stairs and balconies.

“Which brings us to treehouses. At their simplest they are for kids, at their most complex, for Tarzan and Jane. Or they were until The Blackthorne.”
Robert Ragaini, The Boston Sunday Globe

The Blackthorne Inn is truly paradise. This architectural wonder is the perfect place to gather with family. We loved the huge fireplace under the equally huge sky light nestled under a canopy of towering trees; the hot tub, the all glass lookout "nest" room, the sun room and deck. Hosted by the gracious Robert and well tended by the grounds crew, the Blackthorne makes you feel like you’re perched in a treehouse in the forest, but you’re only a short walk down the hill from a first class gourmet food store, and perhaps two miles from the fabulous Point Reyes Station with several great restaurants and terrific boutique art galleries and clothing stores. We hesitate to write more to help insure we’ll be able to secure a reservation for ourselves when we want to come back in the future. Plan ahead! The Blackthorne Inn is one of the very most desirable lodgings in this very popular vacation area.

My co-workers and I went here for a staff retreat in April of 2013, and it was truly dazzling. We work for a small non-profit with mentally ill people, so we really need to relax on our retreats, and this was prefect. The aesthetics of the home were straight out of a Tolkien elven village! The beds were very comfortable. The only thing I should say is that if you are very prone to motion sickness do not stay in the top room, the round one, because it sways ever so slightly. I stayed in that room, and just loved it, but some of my older co-workers were a little nervous about it, fyi-put the youngsters in that room. The kitchen was very well equipped, and we have some very fine chefs, in fact several of my co-workers have done professional cooking in the past, and were impressed with the kitchen. The owner was very kind, and easy to deal with. I highly recommend this lovely place!!!

Family and friends gathered together for a delightful week and an enchanting New Year's Celebration! This magical house is nestled among hundreds of trees, immaculately groomed gardens, and massive wood decks; each level leading to the next treasure. It has lovely guest rooms and beautiful features that took us days to fully discover. We enjoyed our days at Drakes Beach, lunches in Pt. Reyes Station and in SF, dinners around the hearty table followed by cozy fires at the hearth with games, movies, s'mores, and fun conversation. The pleasant Blackthorne caretaker kept the firewood well-stocked and the spa nicely heated. Blackthorne was the perfect setting for our happy gathering. This spectacular home is most memorable and we look forward to returning!

My five siblings and spouses, 11 in all, recently returned from a reunion at the Blackthorne Inn. We had all seen the pictures and the video but this wonderful residence exceeded all our expectations. We enjoyed especially the top deck, soaking in the hot tub while birds flew and chattered in the trees. We enjoyed long catch-up visits in the beautifully appointed living room. We enjoyed our breakfasts on the deck in the crisp morning air. In fact, in general, the architecture of Blackthorne as it climbs up the hillside and the ready access to beautiful decks on all levels made us feel close to the trees, the animals and the natural surroundings. All furnishings and appointments were interesting and beautiful. The workmanship in many details was a pleasure to behold; i.e., the stone fireplace, the revolving door at the top of the circular stairs; the stained glass windows -- amazing! The kitchen where we prepared breakfasts and a dinner was stocked with everything one could ever need. Each bedroom space was lovely and unique and allowed all of us to find just the one that suited. I read the history of Blackthorne which was provided and it was thrilling to me as a NorCal resident to learn of all the historical bits and pieces that have been found and lovingly incorporated into the building. Blackthorne is so centrally located, we were able to enjoy Limantour Beach in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Other favorite easy-to-reach places we explored were Stinson Beach and Muir Woods. The beauty of this wonderful place truly provided an ambience of relaxation and pleasure that made our time together extra special. We were there just three nights and it wasn't enough. We had the pleasure of staying here for the labor day weekend in 2013 and while the photos made the place look magical - it was even better! The common areas were great for socializing, and the rooms private enough to let one escape when it got late or you just needed a nap. The eagle's nest was absolutely stunning (though the occupants were very grateful for the blinds - it gets sun early!). 5 of the six rooms also accommodated babies (8m-4y) and while the house is not childproofed, we had no troubles at all. Our little toddlers were able to crawl, walk, and run about quite safely (with close adult supervision at all times of course!) and there was a nice box of blocks and infant-appropriate toys - a sweet little bonus! The stairs would likely be an obstacle to the elderly, frail or otherwise disabled - there are lots of 'em. We hope to come back. This place was really amazing

We hosted a couples retreat at the Blackthorne, and it was perfect for our needs. The bedroom to bathroom ratio is great, the house was clean, and ready for our arrival. It was so clean, in fact, that I wondered how much time goes into resetting the house between guests. We stayed at the house in the spring, and the guests (12 of us, total), knew at most 2 or 3 of the other guests. Lots of friends of friends. The house was big enough that there was no discomfort with that, allowing people to spread out and congregate at whatever levels they'd like. On the last night we stayed there, half the guests left, and so our children (4 & 6) joined us and they had a wonderful time at the house, too. It felt safe, and they got a kick out of the different rooms, the layout, and the banana slugs.

Our group of 5 couples just spent 4 of the most wonderful days at Blackthorne. We have taken many weekend getaways together over the past 40 years of our friendship, and this ranks right up there at the top of the list as one of our best. First, we all had looked at the pictures and video of Blackthorne, but upon driving up the driveway we were awestruck with the beauty of the home. Robert was just leaving when we arrived and he could not have been more helpful and accommodating with our rental. Once we entered the home we realized that no pictures or videos could capture the magnificence of this home and we couldn’t wait to explore this “castle in the trees.” Some of the most spectacular features were the fireplace, the spiral staircase, the Eagles Nest room, and most of all the outdoor decks….all beautiful, but the whole house is amazing. The setting in the trees couldn’t have been more peaceful and beautiful. Our weekend was filled with many highlights with a Murder Mystery dinner one night and a crab feed another night with fresh crabs from Bodega Bay. By far, our favorite memory of the weekend was when a member of our group passed down 5 king-size handmade quilts, made by his mother, to the 5 ladies in our group. What a special and priceless gift to all, and we couldn’t have imagined a better setting than the Blackthorne Inn. We unanimously decided to come back next year for our annual getaway and have already booked with Robert. If you’re looking for a special place to gather family or friends for a weeks vacation or a weekend getaway there is no better or more special place than Blackthorne…. a true “castle in the trees”.

We rented The Blackthorne for our engagement party, and I couldn't be happier. I first balked a bit at the price, but after being here, its so amazing, we can't wait to rent it again! It's the perfect place for a bunch of people - I think we had every bed filled, and some on the couches. The hot tub was a perfect respite for a whirlwind weekend. The Kitchen and Dining area made for a great buffet, and the decks were second to none. The views are *amazing*!

Our group had a magical three days at the Blackthorne Inn. The home was right out of a fairytale. Beautifully decorated and fully equipped, the home provided us with plenty of comfy sleeping areas, a cozy fire, a bubbling hot tub and enough room in the kitchen for numerous cooks, We sang, danced, crafted, hiked and thoroughly celebrated several 50th birthdays! Over the phone Robert, the owner of Blackthorne, was extremely easy going and easy to contact. He also responded quickly to all email communications. Looking forward to staying in this amazing home again in the futur

Our family of 13 just spent a week in the trees at one-of-a-kind Blackthorne. We had 2 grandparents, 6 daughters and husbands, and 5 grandkids ages 4 - 15. Everyone enjoyed discovering all of the balconies, spiral staircases, decks, the "tower," and views. The grandkids called the place "Hogwarts." The 4-year-old had no trouble with the stairs and railings. This is a great place for birdwatchers. We saw close to 100 species, many in the trees around the house. Point Reyes is famous for its birds and wildlife. We had a doe and two fawns meander through the back slope daily. Lots of stellar jays, acorn woodpeckers, and wilson's warblers around the decks and trees. We enjoyed steaming open oysters on the BBQ, relaxing on the huge front deck, partying on the jacuzzi deck, and entertaining visiting friends in the beautiful living room.

                              Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: My name is Robert Galliani. I am a 3rd generation San Franciscan. My wife of 23 years and I have three children ages 20, 18 and 16. We happily and very fortunately live in a beautiful place called Marin County California where our lives are intertwined and revolve around our children. We bought The Blackthorne and continually improve it. We invite people to rent it nightly and weekly to experience this unique, one-of-a-kind, hand made home, which we will keep in our family for generations.

Why the Owner Chose Point Reyes Station:
In 1975 a friend of mine who was a Princeton educated engineer and his wife bought a spectacular acre of land next to the Point Reyes National Seashore halfway between the village of Inverness CA and the town of Point Reyes CA. (1 hour from San Francisco). With the help of master craftsmen, he built a spectacular 4-story wood crafted 'castle' resembling a giant tree house that his wife named 'Blackthorne' after the main character in James Clavell's novel SHOGUN. From 1982 to October 2010 they ran it as a very successful and famous B&B. We bought it because the location is heaven on earth. The house is placed adjacent to a a national park surrounded and minutes from some of the best beaches in the world as well as the quaint town of Point Reyes with its fine restaurants and shops and the village of Inverness. 100,000 acres of national park covered with hiking trails is at our doorstep while Tomales Bay is 8 houses down the street and the city of San Francisco is a one hour drive away.
