Lee Vining house description

This outrageously cozy home is nestled against the Bodie hills, perched on the rim of the ancient sea known now as Mono Lake. Not far below the house are scattered tufa formations from the Pleistocine era. Wildrose Station (named after the original owner's radio handle) is a safe haven, private, with a road gate, perfect as a writer's retreat or romantic getaway on 40 acres. The house has a bird's eye view, nearly 360 degrees, over Mono Lake, it's volcanic islands, the Mono Craters, the White Mountains (Bristlecone trees) which border Nevada, wrapping around to Mt. Tom, to Mammoth Mountain ski area, June Mountain ski area, the Mineret range within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, high peaks of Yosemite National Park, up to Lundy and Virginia Lakes and Dunderberg Mountain. The historic ghost town of Bodie is just a few miles in the hills behind the house. To the east of Mono Lake, herds of wild horses roam.

The house is small, yet with an open, studio-like floor plan, with expansive views and late day light offering spectacular sunrises, moonrises, alpenglows and stargazing. Each season offers something special for recreation, just out the door and 5-45 minutes away. Summer days are long...great birdwatching, kaying, canoeing, wildflowers viewing and hiking in the nearby canyons, fly-fishing,dirt biking. The autumn usually offers California's most spectacular fall colors in aspen clustered canyons nearby--a photographer's paradise. Hot springs are accessible year-round....some just to the north outside of Bridgeport and others southeast of Mammoth Lakes and Benton Hot Springs.

Winter days at the house are surprisingly long and warm inside while the great outdoors offers some the best back-country skiing, alpine at nearby June Mountain( 25 minutes) & Mammoth Mountain(45 minutes) ski areas, and out the door cross country skiing, as well as California's own ice climbing at nearby Lee Vining Creek canyon and at Silver Lake (June Lakes). The largest nearby airport is Reno, Nevada, a two and a half hour drive from the house. More photos are avalable at website below, or contact me for more photos and links. Thank you.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: I am a mother of two young children these days, and not able to visit my sweet home as much as I'd like. Living at Wildrose Station for almost a decade was paradise. As a single woman I felt very safe and could really relax after a long day/night around many people. I am thrilled to be able to share this place with special guests who enjoy the solace of wide open spaces, away from populated areas. It's an ideal writer's retreat. I used to go dirt-biking when friends would visit; skied in and out of the house in winter on the driveway. Many fond memories.

Why the Owner Chose Lee Vining:
I was fortunate to hear about this house coming up for sale one evening at the Mono Inn. It's a rock solid gem in the wide open sage wildland.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This house is off-grid, solar-powered, back up generator, amazing warmth in winter. Outrageous views and sense of peace. The house has contemporary appliances and furniture. So much to say. Please check out the other website for more detailed information and photos. Thank you!
