Big Sky is a striking, Western Arts-and-Crafts-style home that stands on a carpet of green lawn and golden grasses within the great bowl of the mountains. Overhead, the sky is very big indeed, an endless, weightless blue from horizon to horizon. Big Sky, rugged and handsome, is truly in its glory in summer and early fall. The air smells of sagebrush and pine, the rivers run swift and clear and a nearby bike path will take you to the shops and restaurants of Wilson and all the way into Teton Village. Dogs are as welcome at Big Sky as their owners – the house has its own canine courtyard connected to an indoor dog room by a pet-sized door, and a special dog-wash area in the two-car garage. But Big Sky was, without a doubt, built for people, for it is everything a house should be: comfortable and spacious, welcoming, warm, and utterly lovely, with glowing colors, rich fabrics and high quality furnishings and art in every room.
The front door opens to a stone-floored foyer, and from here Big Sky unfolds. Great banks of windows saturate the rooms with sunlight. Wood floors, stone fireplaces and hues of crimson, butterscotch and rich brown warm private and public spaces alike.
The kitchen is a cook’s dream. A walk-in pantry, side-by-side refrigerators, drawer dishwashers and an under-counter, drawer-style fridge and freezer make food storage, prep and clean up a true pleasure. A glossy wood bar hewn from great slabs of walnut separates the kitchen from the firelit dining room; French doors open to the terrace, the built-in grill and the picnic table. It is out here, in summertime, that you feel it most: that life is good, and joy’s there for the taking.
A massive, double-sided stone fireplace marks the transition from dining to living space, where the ceiling soars to double height. Friendly, soft armchairs and a loveseat face each other in front of the gas fire, and a fine bronze of a horse and cowboy rears upon the big hewn mantelpiece. To one side – a part of both the living and dining rooms and yet a quiet corner all its own – is a gorgeous built-in banquet set under a long band of mullioned windows and a stained glass-topped divider. This is the place for pancakes, card games or pizza and a movie. At the other end of the living room, the billiards table, illuminated by a pine branch pendant lamp, stands under a dazzling view of Grand Teton National Park, the ski slopes and the Grand itself. A door leads to the terrace if the mountains call you outside.
Stairs and an elevator rise to Big Sky’s second floor – a huge master suite, spacious and intimate all at once, which begins as a loft-like space over the living room. Up here, a living and TV area, an office, a coffee bar and an exterior bridge to a second bedroom make up the ancillary rooms of the suite, while a serene, airy bedroom, European in ambiance and filled with clear light, forms the heart of it.
In the master bedroom, a wide, simple bed faces a picture postcard scene of the Tetons, and a beamed wood ceiling vaults overhead. A mullioned door opens to a balcony over the dining terrace. Even the walk-in closet has a window with a view. The master bathroom has a balcony of its own, double sinks, a water closet, and a deep jetted tub overhung by a fanciful crystal chandelier. The roomy, glass-walled shower has a window that can be opened to the fresh mountain air. Down the hallway from the living loft is a second bathroom with a bath and shower combination.
A bridge from the master suite takes you outside beneath the great wash of sky to a simple bedroom and all-around “hang-out” area over the garage. This is a casual, comfortable room, with hanging racks instead of closets, and a great comfortable lounge chair facing a flat-screen TV. Panoramic views to the south and east can be seen from anywhere in the room. Beneath this bedroom is the two-car garage, connected back to the main house by an interior, windowed walkway.
The guest room is on the ground floor, directly beneath the master bedroom. Comfortable and quiet, French doors open to the picnic terrace and the glorious mountains. The guest bathroom is luxuriously outfitted; double sinks stand next to a glassed-in shower with a bench and a window that opens to the sweet summer breezes. Outside on the picnic terrace, the view rolls away uninterrupted for miles upon miles.
While to the west, nothing stands between Big Sky and the great, rolling valley floor, to the east is a lovely house called Sundance. For an extended family gathering or group of friends, the two houses – far enough apart for privacy but close enough to form a compound – taken together make for a very grand vacation indeed. Big Sky’s location is just about perfect – right smack in the middle of nature in all its splendor, with world-class hiking and fishing galore, and yet close to the flat, easy bike path, the funky restaurants and markets of Wilson and the best dancing in all of Jackson at the Stagecoach on Sunday nights…. Wear your boots, your Stetsons and the mile-wide smile that Big Sky confers.
