The 'Gold Country Cottage' is an adorable vintage bungalow located on a hill just a few minutes walk from historic downtown Colfax, CA.
Colfax has a long history that features prominently in the California Gold Rush of the mid-1800’s. As a stop for the Trans-Continental Railroad, it became a dropping-off point for travelers migrating out west to try their hand at success. Colfax is right in the heart of Gold Country, and in the heart of California history as well.
Ride the Amtrak train to Colfax from Reno and Tahoe to the east, or from the San Francisco Bay Area. The proximity to the historic railroad makes 'Gold Country Cottage' a particularly unique vacation experience. You will be charmed by the quaint town of Colfax and the bungalow itself.
The house is surrounded by peach trees, apple trees, and figs, and all are ripe for the picking, when in season. We provide the supplies for pie making. Come stay and make your own pie! Also, the property boasts delicious grapes. The home is warm and spacious with hardwood floors throughout. The front yard contains a sunny patch of lawn with a picket fence and a hedge for added privacy. The front of the house has a nice Southern-style porch for sitting and watching the world go by. The enclosed yard makes it safe for children as well as pets.
Little White House is a vintage home with comfortable amenities. You will find the house comfortable and well maintained with the following features:
• Three Bedrooms: Bedroom (1) has a King bed, Bedroom (2) has a Full bed, Bedroom (3), an add-on room, has two single beds.
• For larger groups, the living room has two queen-size sleeper sofas.
• Two bathrooms, one with a tub/shower combo, the other with a shower only.
• Full, country-sized kitchen and dining table (seats 6) to make your stay comfortable and easy.
• Enclosed, private sun-room
• A furnace floor heater has been maintained and is still operational. Two portable space heaters are available, if added warmth is needed.
• For your comfort in the summer months, the house has two large fans and plenty of ventilation.
• The kitchen has an electric range/oven, microwave, refrigerator, blender, toaster and all the necessary dishes, serving wear, pots and pans, etc.
• Clean bed and bath linens are provided
• A washer and dryer are available for use. Please provide your own laundry detergent.
• Fully fenced yard, front and back.
• Parking in driveway and on street.
The photo of the town of Colfax (below) was taken from the top of the hill 20 yards from the house. Take a walk to that scenic spot, and the city of Colfax will take you back in time. Colfax is charming and relaxing with a historical feel. Known for being 'a city without a traffic light, Colfax is a great place to get away from the modern hustle and bustle.

My husband and I and our dog stayed two nights while I attended a conference nearby. The house was clean and comfortable, and suited our needs well. Our dog enjoyed exploring the yard and we enjoyed sitting on the front porch. Colfax and neighboring Auburn are nice friendly places to visit.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children.

We took our toddler on an exciting train ride from Sacramento to Colfax. A short walk through charming Colfax led to the Little White House where we were kindly welcomed by the owner and the well-heated house. Our child enjoyed the use of the childrens' table and the pac' and play. We enjoyed reading in the sunlit rooms. Comfortable restarants and the market are conveniently located within walking distance. The train ride on the return brought more adventure. I happily recommend you and yours to stay at the Little White House.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This little write house is not little, it is really a white house through. The kitchen and all the bedrooms are really roomy, even with a walk in closet in the main bedroom. And the floor plan is really cool for kids. They can explore easily. My two boys love it. The location is super, easy to go to any place in the area. Oh, Colfax is a railroad town, so you can hear trains from the little house, not loud, but nice. I guess you can hear trains in any houses in Colfax.Recommended for: Families with young children.

My boyfriend and I rented this house to attend a wedding in Auburn, and it was a great fit for us and his siblings. Elan was very accommodating and a wonderful, friendly person to meet. The town of Colfax is adorable and the house was in easy walking distance to restaurants and shops. And the price is right!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

We liked the cottage very much. You could walk to town and get coffee at the friendliest coffee shop I"ve been to in a long while. Or go to the Greek Bistro, hear music on a Sunday, and really have a community feeling. If you want deep country get away, this is not your place. But if you want easy access to everything in the area, this is a good pick. We were there on a week-end of unexpected snow and very cold rain. The cottage was very warm and comfortable. It was clean and plenty of room for the kids. They could feel very at home and play. Elan went out of her way to make us comfortable. She made a special trip at night to bring a few items we needed unexpectedly due to weather. She was welcoming and just had that special hospitality where you feel at home but you have the space to just enjoy yourself. A nice cottage, a wonderful hostess. I'd go back again. My son and his wife live in a small apartment in Colfax, with three young children. Staying at The Little White House was the perfect solution, with lots of room for the kids to play (and then nap), a nice kitchen for us to cook meals in (which saved money), a fenced yard, and even a washer and dryer. Then Grandma and Grandpa could rest up at night, and get together again the next day. We bought some fresh produce at the local Farmers' Market, ate some great food at the Mix 'n Mingle Greek Cafe, found some good buys at the thrift store, and enjoyed a visit to Nevada City. The owner of this property is very personable (its her Greek Cafe), and her housekeeper Jean had the place clean and ready for us. We will stay there again on our next visit. By the way, driving from New Mexico when we did we had to pay the same price to stay in single motel rooms! So, this is a good deal.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway.

My son and I stayed in the Little White Cottage in Colfax during the 4th of July weekend. The home was easy to find, off street parking next to the house as promised. Two bedrooms and a third converted room. Washer and dryer in garage (no access to garage for parking). Super cute, simple and clean and easy access to the 4th of July parade and festivities as we were situated on the corner of the main road that led to the town. The whistle of the train could be heard all around, it was pretty cool. The people of the town were very friendly and I enjoyed meeting Elan. We will be back as we have family that live in Colfax and surrounding areas. Thanks Elan for letting us stay in your Little White Cottage! Victoria :)Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: I moved to Placer County area after working as a chiropractor for many years in San Francisco. I first started coming to this area in 2003 to stay in my weekend home in the Foothills, and since April 2007, I have made this area my permanent home. I have grown to love it here. My friends and family can find all their favorite activities accessible nearby. I am confident that you will too.
Why the Owner Chose Colfax:
I fell in love with Colfax and this property in April 2008. I liked the central location, and I had a vision to make it a vacation rental and make the charming town of Colfax a vacation destination. I purchased and renovated a historical building, and opened it as a café in August of 2009. One year later, this property was ready to open as my second VRBO Vacation Rental. The first was # 261628 in Weimar. which has been listed since September of ‘09, and my latest listing is the 'Orchard House' in Meadow Vista/Auburn.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
