My husband, daughter, and I just finished renovating this 18th century, three-story, Non-Smoking, village house last year, bringing it back to life with wood-baked terra-cotta tiles from the famous tile center in Salernes, dark glossy red tile sinks and work surfaces in the kitchen, and hand-carved doors.
Everything has been completely redone, from electricity to plumbing, and even beam replacement where needed. Our mason, known not only for the quality of his work, but his love of old houses, hand-plastered the curving staircases and arched ceilings. Staying there is like being in a small medieval village, but with all the modern conveniences.
A five minute walk from the front door and you are on wilderness hiking trails; a ten minute drive takes you to Manosque, a lively town of 20,000 with a cultural center, wonderful Saturday market.
My daughter, Ethel, who is a food and prop stylist as well as a writer, selected the furnishings, a mix of antique and contemporary, and there is an abundance of new linens for the comfortable beds. As cookbook authors, we made sure the kitchen, though small, was well-equipped with good knives, pots, pans, utensils, and local pottery.
The covered terrace, just off the kitchen, with its view of the rooftops and hills beyond, is ideal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and as you enjoy your meal, you can hear the church bells ringing.
