Tucson Mountain Foothills house description

Set back over 500 feet from the street and accessible only on an unpaved driveway, this mid-century home sitting on a desert hilltop, can restore creativity and promote relaxation with its openness and natural lighting that fills each room. Large picture windows from the living room, dining and bedrooms offer views of the City, Catalina Mountains, Tucson Mountains and memorable sunrises and sunsets. A high ceiling wood beam living room with flagstone fireplace, offers a relaxed spacious atmosphere for family gatherings or to just sit and enjoy the views.

Enjoy outdoor meals on the east facing patio that runs the length of the house while absorbing the panoramic city and mountain views. Entry, lower and upper courtyards are available to watch the sunrise and sunsets. Nearby wildlife corridor offers frequent visits from desert creatures.

A full kitchen with new appliances, cookware and dishes allows you to decide how much or little you wish to cook. The natural light filled dining room looks out into a courtyard and patio and across the living room. A flagstone wall divider between the kitchen and dining room is the ideal height for a serving line buffet. Walking distance to nearby grocery store, restaurants and retail offer fast convenience.

A huge master bedroom with windows on three sides has a queen bed plus a convertible sofa, perfect for a quiet reading spot. Two other roomy bedrooms can accommodate 3 – 5 more persons with queen beds and a futon sofa. The east facing bedroom guests will be greeted by Tucson’s beautiful colorful sunrises peaking over the Rincon mountains.

Surrounded by 40 acres of Sonoran desert and a nearby City nature park, one can take early morning hikes thru the desert. Located less than 5 miles from downtown Tucson and the University of Arizona, nearby golf courses, tennis courts and bike/ hiking trails provide easy access for all levels of interest and ages.

Property is ideal for those who wish for a true desert experience, a relaxing get-away and still want to be close to conveniences within an urban context.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 1970

About the owner: Having moved to Tucson over 35 years ago, the environment surrounding this home has a maintained it’s wide open desert space. We can watch the changing colors of the sky, mountains and city from the privacy of the outdoor patio. With Tucson’s weather, we can enjoy many meals outdoors; open doors and windows to let in fresh air. With open desert surrounding us on all four sides, we have learned to live with the desert dust that gets tracked into the house. It's part of desert living. We cherish the quiet solitude, the relaxing open space and the energizing creativity that is generated from this hilltop. One of our favorite activities is watching the summer monsoon storms move across the valley with the smell of anticipated desert rain. The spring brings unexpected colors of yellow, red, purple, orange and white from desert wildflowers. We have rented this home as a long term rental for over 20 years, and recently we decided to rent it out as a short term vacation rental. We hope you enjoy this special retreat as much as others have.

Why the Owner Chose Tucson Mountain Foothills:
Built by two brothers in the 1950’s as winter cabins for themselves and their guests, two mirrored homes sit atop a hill at the base of the Tucson Mountain foothills surrounded by 40 acres of Sonoran desert. Since these houses were built, the city has grown around us, with a city park with sports lights and a neighborhood shopping center just across the street. Since the 1980’s this residence has been home to writers, artists, architects, professionals and their families who rented this home for long periods. In 2010 we decided to offer one of the homes as a vacation rental. We want others to experience this special place of openness, relaxation and connection to Tucson and the desert.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
A private unpaved driveway contributes to the quiet solitude of the home. During the winter, a small courtyard between the two homes, yields fresh limes, lemons, grapefruit and pomegranate. Within walking distance is a grocery store and restaurants. Within a 15 minute drive are: 3 golf courses, 2 hospitals, University of Arizona and Pima Community College, tennis courts, 3 city parks, downtown, Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, Old Tucson and numerous hiking trails in the Tucson Mountains and the nearby City park.
