Makahuena in Poipu on Kauai is where you can watch the sun rise and set because you’re at the southernmost point of the island. Makahuena provides you with a plethora of activities with its own tennis court, jet spa and swimming pool. When the sun goes down, make good use of the barbeque area or cook in the fully equipped kitchen and dine on your private lanai with beautiful ocean views.
Makahuena vacation condo rentals are within walking distance to Poipu Beach Park and Brennecke’s Beach. Poipu Beach was named by Trip Advisor as Traveler’s Choice 2013 Top 25 Beaches. Just minutes away, this world famous beach offers a beautiful spot perfect for swimming, snorkeling or laying out in the sunshine. While snorkeling in Poipu, you will discover a variety of colorful fish, including the state fish--Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. There is a wading lagoon for toddlers and young swimmers. Poipu Beach also has a large grassy park with children`s play area, picnic area, showers and restrooms. Brenneke`s Beachside Deli, across the street, offers cold drinks, snacks, and the South Shore`s most popular shaved ice! Stop by the deli for delicious sandwiches, all kinds of snacks and treats, and the cool relief of shaved ice.
Stroll down on an ocean front pathway to Shipwreck Beach and watch the sunrise or climb the Mahaulepu Coastal Trail, which begins just beyond the beach. This trail is a special part of the Kauai History Heritage site and the last stretch of accessible coastline on the South Shore that has not been developed. This wonderful coastal hike takes you across a variety of terrain, from small sand dunes to sandstone pinnacles and even a sinkhole cave. The area provides a safe haven for marine life, such as sea turtles and the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. The trail leads to beautiful Mahaulepu Beach, a great place to spot whales in the winter or observe (from a distance) a monk seal napping on the beach.
Shipwreck’s fronts the Grand Hyatt Kauai where you can wander around the lush tropical gardens or indulge in a reviving treatment at the world-class Anara Spa. This lovely setting lets you easily explore the natural wonders of our Garden Isle of Kauai, as well as dine at several delightful restaurants or enjoy the galleries and shops. Treat yourself to one of Kauai`s best luaus, featuring authentic dance, events and cuisine.
Makahuena is just a few miles from historic Koloa Town, the site of the first sugar plantation in Hawaii. The buildings have been authentically restored and now contain quaint shops and small Kauai restaurants. Be sure to stop at Koloa History Center in the middle of town to learn more of the area’s fascinating past. Koloa Town is also where you will find grocery stores, a bank, gas station and the post office.

My 3rd visit to Makahuena

My third visit to Castle Makahuena in December, 2006 was just as pleasant as the first in 2005. Rooms 2305 and 2306 offer perfect views of the ocean and the sunset from the patio. Both units were nicely furnished, roomy and clean. Throughout each day we saw whales either from the patio or from the benches situated by the cliffs. The endless pounding of the surf on the cliffs during the night hours was a beautiful sound to this Oklahoma girl. This location is perfect...near some of the most beautiful beaches you can imagine - Poipu, Kalapaki, Shipwreck and the little known Mahaulepa, where Six Days Seven Nights was filmed. It's a 2-hour drive to the north beaches, but they are also worth seeing. Waimea Canyon is an hour plus and is a great place to see the Napali Coast from above, but go early in the morning as the clouds come in by early afternoon. There is a grocery store in Kapaa, a 5-minute drive from the condo, but a 30-45 minute drive to Lihue or Kapaa will give you better prices at Wal-Mart and Safeway for food and essentials. Wal-Mart and the ABC Store have the best prices on souvenirs. Duke's at Kalapaki Beach by the Kauai Marriott is a wonderful restaurant as is Roy's by the condo. The staff at Makahuena is extremely helpful. Evelyn in the office answered all our questions about all kinds of things. If she didn't know the answer, she phoned someone who could help. The cleaning staff is kind and thoughtful. They bring you towels and empty the trash, so if you are out a lot, you won't see them much. Poipu is located on the sunny side of the island, so it is the perfect place to be in the winter months. All things considered, my next stay will be at the Makahuena on my next trip to paradise.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Lovely view and lanai. Comfortable furnishings. Hot tub was out of service the entire week, which was disappointing, but the pool was enjoyed by the kids daily. Overall a great experience and would recommend to our friends/family.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About: Aloha~ Thank you for viewing my properties! My name is Amy Grant and I own a boutique vacation management company in Kauai called Great Vacation Retreats. I happily work and reside in Kauai and have been managing vacation rentals on the Garden Isle for almost 4 years. Been married to my husband, Scott, since 2003 and we have a beautiful little girl named Presley. When we aren't busy chasing her around, we enjoy going to the beach, cooking and traveling. I love working with my guests to find the perfect place for them to call home while on vacation. It can be overwhelming trying to pick out the right property -- I can help. My staff and I take great pride in the properties we manage and believe that we truly have some of the best properties the island has to offer. We have been in each property numerous times and stayed in most so that we can give you an accurate description of what each property's amenities are, distances to the beach, sightseeing, restaurants, etc. We can also help you with any activities you might be interested in while on island such as surfing lessons, private boat charters, guided hikes, stand up paddling, personal chef, childcare and much more! Mahalo for looking :)
Why Makahuena:
My husband and I were married at Kee Beach on the North Shore and visited the island several times after. We used to manage vacation rentals in Lake Tahoe and many of the owners also owned property in Kauai and asked if we would be interested in starting a business here. After a couple of years, we finally made the move and have been blissfully happy ever since. The island has so much natural beauty and outdoor activities, yet it still doesn't have that 'big resort' feel. It is a great, safe place for children and also makes for a perfect honeymoon or anniversary destination.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
There are so many outdoor activities to enjoy here -- going to the beach, surfing, stand up paddling, horseback riding, hiking, sightseeing, taking a boat charter along the Napali Coast, kayaking, camping, biking, etc.
I enjoy getting a spa treatment at the Anara Day Spa at the Hyatt. If you enjoy going to a spa, their facial is perfect.
My husband and I met at culinary school and consider ourselves 'foodies'. We love the Kilauea Bakery for a great cup of coffee and the bialys (stuffed bagels) are amazing. Some other restaurants that we enjoy are Josselins, the Kalaheo Café, Postcards, Roy’s, Tip Top Café and Kauai Pasta just to name a few. There are some wonderful farmers markets here and fish markets (Hanalei Dolphin is the best) with their fresh local catches of the day. Ahi is, of course, an island favorite and can be found at many of the restaurants throughout the island.
Whale watching is from December - March and is quite a sight to see.
Some of the best golf courses in the US are located in Kauai.
We work with some activity providers that provide personalized hikes and activities that are 'off the beaten path' and truly show you what Kauai has to offer.
